Title: Does anyone have a hobby of collecting items?
Post by: raptorsfan29 on February 23, 2012, 12:23:58 pm
I was thinking of starting a coin collection, I have all the state quarters except the 2009 territorial quarters and DC quarter, I want to collect them plus the presidential 1 dollar coins plus all the national park quarters, Is anyone else collecting coins or thinking about it.

I was collecting the different state quarters for a while, but I forgot about it.  I have the little books.  It's always something I can pick up again.

I have all the state quarters as well.  I was given a set of the territory ones also.
I had been collecting T-shirts from all Hard Rock Cafe's worldwide, but I recently switched to Hard Rock pins.
I am collecting commemorative baseballs from every MLB ballpark I visit.

Three things I collect...

MLB rookie cards, NFL jerseys and Limited edition abstract wildlife sculptures (Cain Studios, Mill Creek)

^^ I was collecting NFL jerseys for a while too, but it got expensive so I stopped.  Now I have a crapload of jerseys I never wear.

Let me know if you need some for your collection...

I too gave up the jersey collecting...
I did the state Quarter thing for my Mom,the problem is,it seems like so did just about everyone else did the quarter thing too...So I'm not really sure why it's a big deal

I think if anything, I'd say Garden gnomes, but I'm trying to really limit, what an how many I buy...I don't have alot of room to put them everywhere,So they need to be different...

I collect shot glasses. I have a shot glass from damn near every place I have ever visited. My parents also travel a lot and I have a ton of them from places they have visited as well including a ton of the Hard Rock locations.

Oh I forgot that.  I do that one too...

I have actively stopped collecting.  I found that it was more stressful trying to take care of and move valueless collections than enjoyment.  I have a bunch of cards and toys from when I was a kid.  Now I feel guilty getting rid of them, but I don't get enjoyment from having them either.  It's just another stress knowing that I have to lug around boxes of crap for the rest of my life.

I am collecting vicariously through my daughter.  I'm filling her room with things that I like.  I've gotten a few bobbleheads of cool girls from Pop Culture -- right now I have Wonder Woman and Princess Leia, but would expand to a few other cool ones I saw.

As for coins, I think the act of finding them is the fun part -- looking at your change.  And at the end of the day, they still have value.

To me, collecting is just clutter. I don't get it.

Y'all are a bunch of Debbie Downers.  I disagree.  It depends on what it is.

I collect things that signify stuff.  Like the Hard Rock pins - I collect a pin from places I've visited (or other people have visited) around the world.  Same with the shot glasses and the baseballs.  And all of them are displayed neatly in a dedicated area or case.  I don't just have random boxes of stuff in my garage.  And there are a finite amount of items you could have.  There are 30 MLB stadiums, so 30 balls is the max, until they build more stadiums.

Its just a little token to remind you of that tie you went to that place and had fun.

I don't know if you knew, but the mint has suspended the presidential dollar program.  I have about 12 silver quarters, that is about the only thing i currently collect. and a bunch of useless baseball cards from my youth.

That's why I take pictures. :-)

It's that which got me into scrapbooking which lead to an entire room of materials. I like my Disney pin board. Small, hangs on the wall and there is a story behind most of the pins

Fish hooks

Fish hooks?  That's kind of a weird thing.  How many kinds are there?  Do you have a pic of your collection?

Not really a collection per se, but whenever I catch a big one, I save the hook and mount it on a corkboard in my garage

Fish hooks

That's weird. Fishermen usually collect lures.

Or flies, depending on the type of fisherman.

That might be what I meant. I honestly don't know the difference. I'm thinking the feathery thing that goes on the hook.

Hooks are pretty much just the basic metal hook. Flies is probably what you meant. A lot of fly fishermen, at least the really devoted ones, pianstakingly tie their own flies. They have different flies for different types of fly fishing, different times of year, etc...  There are also people who collect fishing lures, which are different than flies in design and construction, though I've seen lures that were obviously based off a fly design.

A couple of images to show the difference:

Flies, used for fly fishing trout. Designed to realistically resemble a tasty insect,
because trout are smarter than other fish.

Lures, used for catching bass and other stupid fish who think
"ooh, the pretty colors are moving...chomp"

Compared to most fresh water fish, trout aren't the least intelligent, however the saltwater trout is very stupid compared to say a redfish or a snook.  A saltwater trout will bite on pretty much anything, while the other game flats fish are a little more skittish.

I would think the freshwater trout is the same, but I have never fished them...we only get saltwater trout in my part of FL.

'stroke, you're right. I was thinking of flies. Either way, I don't see why anyone would collect just the hook. That's weird.
