Title: CBS Sports reporting that "Matt Flynn 'wants' to sign with Dolphins"
Post by: EKnight on March 16, 2012, 04:28:00 pm
...but that Miami is "low-balling him."

"Seattle's been rumored to offer substantially less for Flynn's services than Miami would want to; the Seahawks would, according to John Clayton of ESPN earlier in the week, prefer something along the lines of a two-year, $12 million deal for Flynn."

Take that for what it's worth. Does anyone know how much Miami actually has in cap room or can make?? -EK

Last I heard Miami had about $10 million or so in cap room

Miami can restructure Dansby and open up a lot of money. If they wanted to they could restructure Jake Long and give him a new deal since he is in the final year of his and his cap number is gigantic and they could open up a real real lot of money (but they don't want too touch Long right now, that is bad business for Miami to give him a new deal and they know that) ! They could also cut Bell and clear up $6 mill right there, and that has been talked about. Cut him and bring him back at a much lower number.

Cap room isn't an issue for Miami.

My problem with all of this is either you want Flynn or you don't. Manning didn't even want to meet with Miami, the Dolphins had to beg for a meeting, they had to know he wasn't coming here. They sat on their ass with Flynn till yesterday. Flynn ready to move on lines up Seattle (I don't blame him either.) Now, they want to meet with him but they don't want to pay him. Give the guy a fair market offer, don't low ball him if you want him! Otherwise it's just an exercise in a waste of time and don't talk with him at all. And in the process you upset the guy and his agent by sending what would probably be regarded as an embarrassing offer. The guy in the end might sign with Miami and be bitter about it.

The Dolphins are trying to be half-pregnant, which you can't be! Either you are or you aren't all in on Flynn. And if you are in and want the guy to be your starting QB, go about your business in normal, respectable way. What they are doing is a shaddy way to do business. You can send an initial offer without trying to "low-ball" people.

This is the most important position on the team too. If they were trying to "low-ball" a safety or a offensive guard, that is one thing. This is the starting QB position for christ sakes!

Just read on ESPN that Flynn won't sign with Seattle today and will at least visit Miami before any decision is made.

Miami actually has a guy who WANTS to be their starting QB and play for them! I'm not saying Flynn is the second coming of anything, he might suck when all is said and done. But he WANTS to be here and to me, that counts for something.

A guy that actually WANTS to play for the Dolphins? And he might actually be good? Why o why do I think the Dolphins will mess this up...

First of all, how do you low ball a guy with two career starts? Secondly how does anyone know what the offer is since these reports started before Flynn even had a meeting scheduled with Miami. These Miami reporterss are sucking the life out of the team as much as the front office if you ask me.

This question seems to be implying that because he only has two starts what ever the Dolphins offer him he should take even if it is the vet min.

Players with zero career starts and whose only choice is accept the offer or not play football -- some times hold out.

I would proffer that offering less money to Flynn than what Cam Newton got is lowballing him.  He has more starts than Cam did when Cam got a contract from Panthers.

I agree with ya, to a point, but a few answers to your question could be:

1) Not all 2-career-start QBs are equal. Flynn has spent his three seasons behind one of the 2-3 best QBs in the league, so he probably could have been channeling Joe Montana in practices and still not had any more opportunities.

2) We're not paying for his past performance, we're paying for what the team management feels his future performance is worth.

3) When in one of your two career starts, you go nuclear apeshit and throw for 480 yards and 6 TDs. ;)

The only thing I think all of you are forgetting is that Philbin has seen Flynn practice for a couple years. If the Dolphins are "low balling" him then to me that tells you that Philbin was not impressed wth Flynn and if that's the case I don't see any reason for me to be impressed with him.

Miami already HAS a guy that WANTS to be their staarting QB. His name is Matt Moore. Unless you're convinced that Flynn is a heck of a lot better than Moore, there's really no reason to offer him a big contract. And if you offer him starter money, then aren't you pretty much telling Matt Moore that he's no longer the QB in Miami? Perhaps the Dolphins think Flynn really isn't an upgrade over Moore. If Philbin isn't that impressed with the guy, I kinda tend to agree.

How can Flynn believe that Miami is "low-balling him" if Seattle is offering "substantially less" than Miami would want to?

I think maybe he has unrealistic expectations.

Reports are Seattle only wants to give Flynn a 1 or 2 year deal. And they won't hand him the starting QB job.

Seattle has also moved on to Alex Smith. They like him and they want to stick it to SF at the same time...lol

Miami Dolphins waste little time, begin meeting with Matt Flynn on Saturday morning by Ben Volin

The Miami Dolphins aren’t wasting any time with Matt Flynn.

Flynn, the Dolphins’ top free agent priority now that Peyton Manning has eliminated them from contention, is in South Florida this morning to meet with Dolphins officials and get checked out by the team’s medical staff, his father, Alvin Flynn, said by phone Saturday morning from Texas.

Flynn was in Seattle yesterday visiting with the Seahawks, the Dolphins’ top competition for his services, and flew to South Florida after it finished, landing here around 5 or 6 this morning after some delays, his father said.

The Dolphins had planned to let Flynn rest this morning after the long flight and three-hour time change, but instead had to get going with the tests because of a small window to work with the medical staff. Flynn’s meetings with the football staff will then proceed after the medical tests.

Alvin Flynn said his son enjoyed his visit with the Seahawks but had no intention of signing with them before visiting the Dolphins and new head coach Joe Philbin, who was Flynn’s offensive coordinator the past four seasons in Green Bay.

“He said it was a really nice place, and he enjoyed it, but he wanted to look at both of them. That was the way he felt going in,” Alvin Flynn said.

But now that he’s in South Florida, he may not leave. The Dolphins are considered by many experts as the logical landing spot for Flynn, given his connections with Philbin and the team’s desire to find a franchise quarterback.

“Logic would tell me he would do something this weekend or thereabouts,” Alvin Flynn said. “He doesn’t want to drag this out.”

Watching NFL Network talk about they don't believe Flynn is much "If" any better than Matt Moore!   With his yrs in Philbin's system... he has to be more comfortable with the offense than Moore would be at this point!

I really don't know what to think anymore... smh!

If Seattle thinks they are "sticking it" to SF by signing Alex Smith, they are dumber than I thought.

They should be paying for "Keep Alex Smith a 49er!" billboards in SF.

Damnit, I hate all this waiting... now there are reports (a.k.a. rumors) that Flynn is signing with Seattle today.

If Denver gets Manning, could Seattle wind up with Tebow?
