Title: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Dave Gray on April 16, 2012, 02:46:43 pm ...actually kinda cool.
It's so out there and gaudy that I found myself really hoping to see it in action. I don't hate it nearly as much as I was when I first saw it. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: MaineDolFan on April 16, 2012, 03:43:08 pm I was watching this weekend when Hanley hit one to center. My wife was walking by and said "what in the ass is that thing?" Her reaction made me love it. She doesn't swear. Ever. It's so awful it made my wife swear. She was also blown away by the color of the walls.
I think it should spin every time something half way decent happens, right down to routine ground outs. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Brian Fein on April 16, 2012, 04:38:42 pm ugh, its SO bad. It would be better if it were about 25% of its current size.
Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Phishfan on April 16, 2012, 04:39:37 pm What is Dave smoking?
Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Dave Gray on April 16, 2012, 06:32:47 pm I think people may grow to love it. Opposing fans will surely hate it and complain about it.
EDIT: I wish it weren't visible when not active. If it were somehow hidden and then came out of the ground or something, that'd be even cooler. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Thundergod on April 16, 2012, 07:32:02 pm What is Dave smoking? Seriously. :D That thing is frickin' horrendous, embarrasing, cheesy... omg. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Sunstroke on April 16, 2012, 07:39:32 pm It's technicolor roadkill... It's what your morning heaves would look like after an evening of eating rainbow sherbet and slamming vodka shots. Until the Marlins realize how ridiculous that HR sign is, I'm just going to pray for a lot of pitching duels. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Brian Fein on April 17, 2012, 10:52:53 am The Marlins' new logo got puked on when it first came out. Now, the Marlins hat is the second best seller in baseball
The Marlins' new uniforms got puked on when they first came out, and jersey and t-shirt sales are at a franchise record high. The Marlins' home run feature is getting puked on, and I suspect that after a while it will become a beloved feature of the ballpark and people will be sad when they take it down. That feature is the Marlins version of the Tampa Bay pirate ship. I do agree that it would be better if it came out of the ground though. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Phishfan on April 17, 2012, 10:56:47 am ^^^ You have to take into account that they do indeed have a new logo and that is the only reason the Marlins cap would be a best seller right now. Once the fan base has gotten their new logo gear you can expect to see the sales drop to a normal level.
Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Brian Fein on April 17, 2012, 11:01:42 am ^^ Yes, I agree, but the point is that if everyone hated the logo as much as they appeared to when it was first "leaked" then they wouldn't be buying hats with that logo on it, would they?
Plus I have seen many people who don't even know what a ground-rule double is wearing Marlins hats. You never saw that before. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Dave Gray on April 17, 2012, 11:05:49 am Anecdotally, Brian is right. I see a lot of new Marlins hats in the wild right now. You didn't see a lot of old logo hats floating around last year.

That feature is the Marlins version of the Tampa Bay pirate ship. Still puking on them. And I'm sorry Brian, but the pirate ship is actually pretty cool. ^^^ You have to take into account that they do indeed have a new logo and that is the only reason the Marlins cap would be a best seller right now. Once the fan base has gotten their new logo gear you can expect to see the sales drop to a normal level. Agreed. And you're always going to have the homers, and the "i don't really care" casual fan buying that swill to be with the "in" thing. If they changed the logo to a flaming turd these groups would still buy it up.Anecdotally, Brian is right. I see a lot of new Marlins hats in the wild right now. You didn't see a lot of old logo hats floating around last year. When the Heat went on their run to the Finals both times all I saw was Heat merchandise on the street. It's what's popular now. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Brian Fein on April 18, 2012, 02:13:35 pm ^^ I never said the pirate ship wasn't cool. I love when stadiums incorporate a little bit of the home team in the stadium. Like spinning and jumping marlins...
Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Thundergod on April 19, 2012, 02:21:49 am ^^ Wow Brian, what an extreme 180 you've done, especially looking back at the older threads. Guess you can add one more to Lil B's "flip flopped" thread. ;D

It brings out a whole new vision for me!! :DUntil the Marlins realize how ridiculous that HR sign is, I'm just going to pray for a lot of pitching duels. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Brian Fein on April 19, 2012, 10:02:05 am Thundergod, my last post was mostly sarcastic. While I do love incorporating the team into its home stadium (and that pirate ship is awesome), I still think that home run sculpture is a work of awful. Read my stadium review from Marlins Park. The thing is hideous and I wish it would go away or be smaller, or less visible. I like the idea, I hate the implementation.
The aquariums behind home plate, though, are PIMP. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: bsfins on April 19, 2012, 02:03:18 pm I'm a Cubs fan, so it's not that big of a deal to me....but my thoughts are....
I still hate the Marlins Logo,as it is on the hats and such....I'm fine with the orange black, and white uni's...They're fine. The Marlins park sign behind home plate (and across the jersey is a tad bit better,a little easier....Not good, just a tad better, and I'm not sure why....I even in an odd way like the Lime Green walls,it different. I love Aquariums, but the ones in the park look like Hologram sticker video boards,on T.V.with the blue grow light for the deep water corals...Every once in a while you see a fish swim by,when it's zoomed in pretty tight on a batter on deck/stepping out of the box....So to me those are a fail, should have put a lighter background, gone with more of a daylight lighting, bigger fish (even though it would probably get enough sunlight naturally,I feel for those tank cleaners responsible for keeping that tank clean) The Liberace monument is still bad,no getting use to it,and liking it more the more I see it.... My Hijack Comment - The Logo, and Statue (along with the logo with the "Dolphins Stadium") makes me quake, shiver, sick to my stomach, nauseous,is the room spinning,at the thought of tweaking, changing the Miami Dolphins Logo.... Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Brian Fein on April 19, 2012, 02:17:15 pm I have said repeatedly that the fish tanks should have been bigger. But as they are, just because you can't see them well on TV doesn't make them a failure, IMO.
You're just bitter that the Marlins are kicking the crap out of the Cubs this week. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: bsfins on April 19, 2012, 02:28:15 pm ^^ no, I'm bitter about 2003... J/K :D
I think the idea of aquariums is good, the execution is bad.... Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Brian Fein on April 19, 2012, 05:20:10 pm Steve Bartman is my hero!
Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Dave Gray on May 30, 2012, 09:27:34 am I saw the stadium for the first time last night. The sculpture is dope. It's gaudy in the best way possible.
Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Phishfan on May 30, 2012, 10:58:05 am I saw it on TV yesterday. It is still ugly as hell.
Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: SportsChick on May 30, 2012, 11:13:15 am Dave pointed something out last night and he's right - the colors, the sign, they're all better in person than on TV. That said, I despise the lime green walls and HATE that the roof is always closed.
Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Dave Gray on May 30, 2012, 11:21:54 am There's something about TV that washes out the colors. I think there's some kind of "steam" or "smoke" that creates a slight haze that really dulls out the color palette on TV. The lime green is hideous on TV. You might still think it's hideous in person, but it definitely POPS, like it doesn't on TV. Also, in person, the fishtanks are better. They are dark and you can't see them on TV. In person, they're cool. On TV, the sculpture doesn't look as large. In the stadium, that thing hangs enormous.
By far, the best thing about the stadium, in my opinion, is that you can walk up and get a hot dog or beer and you are still in the experience. You can see the play on the field, but more importantly, you still feel the stadium's energy. They did a nice job. And I went into the Clevelander afterward: It's a club inside the stadium. It's nice. It fits better than Club Liv in the Dolphins stadium. There were essentially topless women with body paint dancing on the bar, with a pool and some TVs. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Brian Fein on May 30, 2012, 11:46:35 am I think, all said and done, my biggest problem with Marlins Park is the roof. These buffoons made a rule that says if ita above 80 degrees, the roof will be closed. Well, that's pretty much every day here.
I think the roof should be open for every night game, unless its raining. Wanna close it for day games when its 97 degrees? Fine, I'm down with that. But its a night game, there's no sun, its 83 out and a nice breeze, let's open that sardine can and enjoy the south Florida weather. Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Dave Gray on May 30, 2012, 12:44:24 pm ^ I agree. Or at least loosen the rules so that it's able to be opened more regularly.
I was a little surprised to see how big the field is. It seems friggin' gigantic out there and a few balls that I thought were gone were caught at the track after hanging for an eternity. But I guess the old park was that way too. I wonder why Miami (think air) insists on having such a huge outfield. One more thing, does anyone have a definitive (with proof) explanation of the rules in regard to a pop-fly hitting the roof? Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Brian Fein on May 30, 2012, 01:29:12 pm I asked Juan Rodriguez from the Sun Sentinel that question, and he claims that the roof is tall enough that it is impossible to hit a ball into it. I believe that anything's possible, but it sounds like it hasn't been addressed, or at least he didn't know. From the looks of it, the roof is high enough that hitting it with a ball appears unlikely.
When it happens, people will be confused an I'll say "told ya so." Juan C. Rodriguez @JCRMarlinsbeat Even possible to hit a ball that high? RT @brianfein do you know what's the rule in Marlins Park if a ball hits the roof? Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Phishfan on May 30, 2012, 01:38:51 pm There are separate rules for each covered park (I guess that takes into account the design differences). I've not been inside Miami's park but would think not having any rule in place is a recipe for possible disaster.
Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Brian Fein on May 30, 2012, 01:57:29 pm There may be a rule, I'd think there has to be a rule. I think maybe its not well publicized.
Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: BigDaddyFin on May 30, 2012, 05:50:32 pm It can't be any more gaudy or an eyesore than that stupid assed apple at Shea Stadium all those years. So I think they're ok.
Title: Re: Marlins home run sign. Post by: Phishfan on May 30, 2012, 06:03:49 pm ^^^ You definitely smoke something very strong or have not seen that gawd awful creation.
