Title: So how much of a suspension should Raffi Torres get? Post by: Pappy13 on April 18, 2012, 02:13:54 pm If the league is gonna suspend Shaw for 3 games for making contact with the goalie where it did not appear he was trying to hurt him, what should Torres get for his hit on Marian Hossa where he left his feet and put him in the hospital? The rest of the playoffs?

Title: Re: So how much of a suspension should Raffi Torres get? Post by: Brian Fein on April 18, 2012, 02:30:08 pm I love these little penalty analyses that they put together.
This seems similar to Ovechkin's hit on a Penguins' player (I forget who) right before the all star break, and Ovechkin got 3 games. I don't know Torres's history of fines but that seems to play into the decision. I would expect him to get at least 3 games, maybe more due to Hossa being likely done for the season. Ovechkin's hit (http://dc.sbnation.com/washington-capitals/2012/1/23/2728550/video-alex-ovechkin-suspension-brendan-shanahan-washington-capitals) Edit to add - The Shanahan analysis clearly states the the Pittsburgh player was not injured and Ovechkin's suspension was 3 games. Based on that, it wouldn't surprise me if Torres is done for the season. Title: Re: So how much of a suspension should Raffi Torres get? Honestly, I don't understand the rules in hockey, in regards to what constitutes an illegal hit from a legal hit. Title: Re: So how much of a suspension should Raffi Torres get? Post by: Phishfan on April 18, 2012, 04:29:35 pm The big one with Torres was that he launched himself and hit the head. Very similar to the issue the NFL tried to address.

Yes it is, but it appeared to me that the the player wasn't trying to initiate contact, he was trying to take the puck away, got a little too close and ended up hitting the goalies head on accident with his shoulder. It was not intentional in my opinion.Torries left his feet which is a major no no. I don't think he intended to hit Hossa in the head either, but when you leave your feet you take full responsibility for the contact then. Hossa had to be taken off the ice in a stretcher and Torres has a history of this type of stuff. I'm thinking he's done for the playoffs. This is just saying that he can't play until they rule on it which is supposed to happen Friday I believe. I would imagine if they rule he gets a 3 day suspension, that tonight's game that he's suspended from will count as 1. But it pretty much is a given that he's going to get suspended for at least 3.Title: Re: So how much of a suspension should Raffi Torres get? Post by: Pappy13 on April 22, 2012, 04:09:52 pm WoW, 25 games. That's HUGE.
Title: Re: So how much of a suspension should Raffi Torres get? Post by: Brian Fein on April 23, 2012, 09:52:26 am 25 games is basically the rest of the season. His team had a maximum of 25 games left at the time of the suspension.
Rumor has it that if the Coyotes get bumped before they play 25 more games, the suspension may carry over to next season. Title: Re: So how much of a suspension should Raffi Torres get? I didn't think there was any maybe about it. The way I looked at it the suspension was for AT LEAST the rest of the playoffs and well beyond that if they don't go deep into the playoffs.Rumor has it that if the Coyotes get bumped before they play 25 more games, the suspension may carry over to next season. |
