Title: Living your Dream,or just making a living Post by: bsfins on April 20, 2012, 11:17:36 am Running into someone earlier this week, and parts of the Warren Sapp thread made me think about our jobs, and how we live...
I've asked this before if you're maybe working in the field you want,or the degree you went to school for...Or are you just in a job to pay the bills, and survive.... I figure most of us,are just making a living, but hey I feel optimistic there are a few of us that are living our dreams... Title: Re: Living your Dream,or just making a living Post by: Phishfan on April 20, 2012, 12:10:48 pm My standard answer to people who ask me what I've been up to is "Living the dream." Afterall, a nightmare is indeed still a dream isn't it?
Title: Re: Living your Dream,or just making a living Post by: Spider-Dan on April 20, 2012, 12:13:12 pm I don't know about "living my dream," but I'm working in my desired field and I'm very close to my ideal (middle-class) job.
I can't complain. Title: Re: Living your Dream,or just making a living Post by: Dave Gray on April 20, 2012, 12:30:14 pm I don't know how to answer this. I like my job. I like the people I work with. I like both those above me and below me in the chain, and more importantly, I think that I'm respected from both directions. I'm not rolling in money, but I make enough where if I make smart decisions, I'm able to not struggle. It doesn't mean I can do whatever I want, and I will strive to do better in the future, but I can make reasonable choices if I'm willing to sacrifice.
One of the best things about my job is that it's a relatively small company. It allows me to be myself and make an impact without a bunch of red tape. I could probably go get a higher salary at a large company, but it would probably crush my creativity. Title: Re: Living your Dream,or just making a living Post by: Buddhagirl on April 20, 2012, 01:44:18 pm I'm kind of indifferent to where I work. I'm not super happy with th field I'm in, and would love to change it, but not sure to what. Web development and tech bores the hell out of me, but it pays the bills and leaves a little left over at the end of the month.
I've never really had a "dream" job. To me all work kind of sucks and takes away from what I'd really rather be doing. Running, biking, reading, writing. I'd love to work for a charity that I truly believe in, but not sure in what capacity. The only plus to my job is that I get to go on some big ass boats and rub elbows with people with tons of cash. (I work in the yachting industry.) Title: Re: Living your Dream,or just making a living Post by: bsfins on April 20, 2012, 03:18:39 pm I'm happy to hear I'm not the only that struggles with not really a dream job,It shaves a tiny hair off my loserness :D ;D
For me there is,and there isnt a dream job,but that job keeps changing.... The guy I ran into had a quite specific degree, when we worked together 15+ years ago,and now is an assistant manager at an electrical supply house...For him it was life,he got married had kids, now divorced... Title: Re: Living your Dream,or just making a living Post by: Dave Gray on April 20, 2012, 04:00:37 pm My dream job is to be in film. ...something like a producer.
But aside from that, my dream job is one that lets me go to work, feel like I'm helping people, and then go home fulfilled, while making enough money and having enough free time to be happy? Am I there? Sometimes...but there's always room for improvement. Title: Re: Living your Dream,or just making a living Post by: Landshark on April 20, 2012, 04:37:31 pm I'd have to say I'm kinda in between because I never set out to be a teacher, but I realized how much I enjoy it once I first got into it.
I'd love to run a fishing charter business once I retire. Title: Re: Living your Dream,or just making a living Post by: Brian Fein on April 21, 2012, 01:26:08 am I feel like I am kinda in the grey area here. I always enjoyed the design field, but even as a designer, I don't do much designing. I am kind of stifled where I am, we all are, its the nature of the business. Sure, I'd love to get out of it, but I don't have the guts to work for myself. Sometimes, I think I made the entirely wrong decision getting into engineering at all, because what you envision as a student is not what happens in the real world.
