Title: Beauty pageants,Miss Universe,Miss America - Why do we still have them?
Post by: bsfins on June 06, 2012, 11:39:57 am
4 days or so before the cool wall expires,so this isn't a cool wall, just randomness....

I didn't realize, care, nor pay attention that we crowned a new Ms America...I've seen things on Yahoo,I think Kimmel had one of the contestants on last night. Now they have Trump is going to sue one of the Ms America contestants, she claims it's rigged...Blah,Blah,Blah....I don't think I cared really since I've been 12,women in bikini's on T.V. that I could ogle in front of Mom without seeming like horny little pervert I probably was.....By then I'd long found a playboy, hustler, Fredrick's of Hollywood catalog...So even then it was tame...

Not that I cared, but I heard a lot more about the Ms America, when it was in Branson for a couple of years...

I guess I can see the superficial relevance of it,maybe 1980,and more so pre 1960.I can see why some women have no problems entering, money, title, publicity, some sort of fame...

Do you think they past there time?

Should they keep having them?

Do you even care that they're still around?

Much like you, I quit caring once I was able to see real porn. I think it means more for the girls than anyone else. They win money, trips, etc. For the general public, I don't think many people care anymore.

I never cared for it. It's just a chance to look at girls in swim suits when flipping through the channels. Nothing more.

I personally think it should end.  It continues this prolonged image of what sexy and beautiful is towards the American population.  Beauty is, and will always be, in the eye of the beholder.  Nine times out of 10, these women are so fake.  Between their bleach blonde hair, breast implants, cheek implants, lord know what other completely unnatural quality they have.  None of that is beautiful, or even remotely attractive to me.  Why are we continuously brainwashed to think these are the most beautiful people in America?

Don't even get me started on the ones involving 5 year old girls..

So, you disagree with this:

Yes.  Yay lets parade your kid around in a princess gown and live vicariously through her because you have your own self esteem issues.

It's like the Mom version of Dad's pushing their kids in sports way too hard because they never made it themselves.  It's horrible.  Just my $0.02 though

I think the "official" pageants, like Miss America, Miss Universe, et al, need to undergo a fundamental shift, both in format and the criteria used to judge contestants. This may get things thrown at me from my fellow carnivorous males, but get rid of the swimsuit portion entirely. We all know where to go if we need porn, and, in my opinion, a "Miss America" should be more about the woman's character/intelligence/activity than what her beaver looks like when shrink-wrapped in colorful fabric...

I want a Miss America who wins her crown because she:

* Carried a 4.0 GPA in Economics, with a minor in Organic Botany.
* Played multiple sports at the highest collegiate levels.
* Is thoughtful and well-spoken on a wide range of issues.
* Started up two foundations, one which teaches children how to be financially responsible and the other establishes organic gardens in unused government inner city properties to help feed the homeless.

Make THAT the ideal woman...make that woman the one the little girls look up to because they see her celebrated on TV. Talk about striking a blow for the good!

In closing, I believe the same shift should be applied to the Mr. America and Mr. Universe pageants as well. Just swap out the aforementioned "shrink-wrapped beaver" with "obscene veiny bulging biceps" in the example above and I'd sign off on that change as well.

That picture has a creepy factor of 10 this morning...

Good call by Sunstroke....

May I add a couple of suggestions,so they could might be able to keep it on T.V. in some way.
(My suggestions are going to stick specifically to the Ms,Mrs side of the pageants)

1.) Quit letting pseudo/reality T.V celebrities be in charge,or Judges of what Ms America should be

2.) a jeopardy style quiz show portion, with a round robin tournament. For T.V. purposes just show the final 3 or 5 battle it out for 30 minutes

I have no problems getting rid of the swimsuit portion, but let's replace it with something we could put on T.V.

3.) Let's have them do an obstacle course, maybe like he ABC's 1970's Superstars

I'm turning into Ms America into Double Dare from the 80's  :D
