I came across this article (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/penny-rounded-penny-lost-ask-161403860.html) and it got me wondering how ya'll feel about pennies. I absolutely have NO problem with this practice in fact I'd appreciate if everyplace ALWAYS rounded. I HATE pennies. Everytime I get them I want to give them back. I usually end up throwing them in my car somewhere only to have to clean them up later. I know some people like to throw them in a jar or something and then go cash it in, but I don't believe it's worth the trouble for a couple bucks over 6 months time or something. Now if you throw all your change into a jar, that's a different story, but pennies I can do without.

So what do ya'll say. Is a penny saved a penny earned or just a nuisance?

I put all my change, pennies included, in a jar.  Its even more trouble to sort out the pennies just cause I hate them more.  They add up over time.

However, it might be a cool concept for places to round up to the next quarter and donate the extra proceeds to charity.

I keep them in a jar with all my other change...I empty my pockets when I get home,and all the change goes in the jar.I then roll all the money,save it to buy something I would like....

I assume this is the storu about Chipotle? All my change goes into a jar. The quarters get separated because I use them for pool playing nights. I wonder if they had specialized their pricing so that they get the benefit of most of the round ups. I would have a problem with it then.

^^ that would be a better idea.  price your stuff so that, after tax, it comes to $3.00 even.  Stuff like that.  No coins at all.

^^That's pretty much impossible to do since sales tax is gonna be impossible to predict. If you price it such that buying one will result in exactly $1.00 buying 2 will not result in exactly $2.00 etc unless the sales tax is also a nice round number like 10%.

After someone complained, Chipotle changed their policy to always round down so they still get the benefit of not having to deal with pennies without costing you a penny...literally.

I throw all of my change in a piggy bank (yes, it's actually shaped like a pig). Every few years I cash it in. 
I would be happy to see us do away with the penny entirely.

I have a change jar I put all my change in. 

Every once an a while I count out 160 of them and stick them in a plastic bag.  Then I hand the bag to the cashier and take a cup of coffee. 

I'll bet they have a special name for you. LOL

Actually she says thanks, less trips to the bank to get change. 

I keep all my extra change in a water cooler jug.  Then when the jug is full, I haul it to the grocery store and dump it into the change converting machine.

Does she count the pennies or just take your word for it?

I use all of my change.  I carry a velcro wallet with a little zipper in it.   At any point, I'll theoretically have .99 or less.  Then I use change whenever I pay for cash to get closer to zero. 

you know how much money you're losing by doing that, right?

^^^ I do the same thing as Landshark. My bank makes me roll my own change and write my account number on the rolls. It is worth 8 cents on the dollar for me to just use the machine.

There are banks that have that machine for free.  Bank Atlantic and TD bank just off the top of my head.  You just have to have an account there.

The machine at my local grocery store doesn't charge the fee if you take payment in a gift card.  I usually get a home depot card or restaurant GC.  Last time I wanted the money, I had $39 worth of pennies, it was worth paying the fee versus rolling all of those.

First couple of times (when it was a bag of nickles and dimes, I started with nickles and dime and then started getting rid of the pennies) she did.  Now, I don't know. 

Currently she just take the bag.  She might just take my word on it or she might count them later when the store isn't busy.

I doubt she is overly worried about a loyal customer ripping her off by a couple of pennies. 

Get rid of the penny altogether. It is a complete waste of resources.

Same at my local grocery store.  So technically, I'm not losing anything.  I'm just restricted to what I can use the money on. 

We toss all of our change in a jar in the kitchen we cash it in when it gets full about 3 times a year which gives us a little over $200.00 at a time. We usually take that with us to Vegas or Laughlin as extra spending money.

Where do you shop? Publix doesn't do this....

Ditto.  My wallet has a small reinforced pouch which I presume is specifically meant for coins.

I don't understand why so many people don't spend their change.  I cannot stand carrying loose change in my pockets, so I have to do something more structured with it.  If if I'm always going to carry around some sort of coin container anyway, why not spend the coins in it?

I pretty much take the same approach if I make multiple purchases in the same day.   But what happens often and is what causes the pile of change is at night I will often take the change out of my pocket and stick on the dresser.  But the next morning neglect to put it back in my pocket.  Next day repeat.  After a month you have a decent sized pile.

I give all my extra pennies to the homeless...usually with a slingshot.

They get rolled and taken back to the bank unless they're on the valuable list.
