Title: Donald Butler gets AFC defensive POW over Cam Wake
Post by: CF DolFan on October 04, 2012, 08:21:13 am
The best thing I can say about this is reflected in one of the comments below the article. It says ... "Were the regular voters locked out or something?

This seems like a replacement-voter kind of error."

I wasn't sure about where other performances would end up ranking but I don't see that Butler's numbers were exceptional. I think Wake's was even if he was playing a college team.

Quote
The NFL announced Wednesday that Chargers linebacker Donald Butler received AFC defensive player of the week honors for making six tackles, a half-sack, and returning an interception for a touchdown in San Diego’s Week Four win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The best defensive player from the American Football Conference in Week Four was factually Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake, who registered 4.5 sacks of Cardinals quarterback Kevin Kolb as Miami came up just short of unseating undefeated Arizona, 24-21.

Although the name of the weekly award suggests it’s an individual honor, the voters apparently decided Butler’s team getting the win was more important. And this isn’t taking anything away from Butler, who had a very nice game. But Wake was more dominant than him on the football field in Week Four and should have been recognized as defender of the week.

I guess 4.5 sacks in a game is not enough.  Wow.

Pathetic. It was not even close.

Just another reason not to put much stock in these types of things.

While it does happen from time to time, it is rare for someone to win a weekly POW, in a losing effort.  Much like it is very rare for the SBMVP to come from the losing team.

Taking an int for a TD, is typically enough to win this.  So Butler was not undeserving.

I think this was PFT trying to drum up comments and page hits.

12 people have recorded more than 4.5 sacks in a single game meanwhile 26 have recorded at least 2 returns for touchdowns in a single game. Call me crazy but seems to me that the sack thing is just a wee bit better.

How many times has the POW been won by someone in a losing effort?  For example, I know both Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have each won O POW 21 times.  I don't recall Tom ever winning that award in a week the Patriots lost the game.  I am pretty sure that is true for Peyton as well.

I know, it is SOOOOO unlike them, to turn a non-issue into an issue.

After the way Arizona's offensive line looked lat night, I'm less impressed by Wake's performance. I'm not sure that there's a bigger Cam Wake fan on this board than me, but being objective- he had NO sacks coming into the game, and recorded the 4.5 against a team that has given up 17 sacks in two games. To me, that does seem to diminish his accomplishment. -EK

I think you guys are too hard on PFT. I was one of the first to bash them and was very hard on them for a  long time but they have reached a status of respect ... even amongst the NFL and other journalists.

I said the same thing on the AZ. VS Rams thread. It is obvious the Cards have issues with the O line. Did Sparano leave N.Y. and go to AZ.? lol

I very much like PFT because they are the best agrigator of NFL news across the NFL.  Better than ESPN or NFL.com.  But on articles that are their own, not a link to somebody else's such as this it is often a non-story that they overblow for page hits.

Not unlike any other media source

Not unlike any other media source

I won't claim that is unique to PFT.  But they do it a lot more frequently and to a greater degree than other sports news sources.
