Title: Voice of America
Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on October 06, 2012, 01:32:42 pm
Should the US Gov't stop funding the radio program "Voice of America" along with Alhurra. Radio Sawa, Radio Farda, Radio Free Europe, Radio Free Asia, Radio Marti and TV Marti?

For those of you unfamiliar with the above they are "public" radio and TV stations paid for  by US tax dollars providing news and entertainment world wide.  However, unlike NPR and PBS which receives a small portion of their budget from the US govement and provide news and entertainment in the US.  These stations get 100% of their funding from US tax payers but provide news and entertainment exclusively to people who do not pay taxes to the US gov't.

I ask b/c while many conservatives view PBS and NPR which provide benifit to US taxpayers as a waste of US dollars, I don't hear the same complaint about VOA.

Should the US Gov't be borrowing money from China to provide the Chinease with entertainment and news?

I thought the point of VoA et al was to provide a "US friendly" news and entertainment source in countries and regions with little or no free (local) press.

That seems like a sensible course of action, although some actual research on whether or not it works would be needed for me to give a definitive answer.

This sounds like a propaganda tool abroad to me.
