Title: Question I have for you
Post by: dolphins4life on October 25, 2012, 07:25:15 pm
So I work at the supermarket as a cashier.  About a month ago, I requested to have September 19th off to celebrate my bday.  They said it was okay and I celebrated.  Next week, when I got my paycheck, I noticed that they had still paid me for that day.  I pointed this out to my supervisor and she said that she would tell the payroll clerk.  I assumed that they would take those hours off my next weeks paycheck.

However, they didn't, so I talked to my supervisor, and she said she would email the payroll clerk again.  So every week, I've been expecting them to take the hours off my paycheck, but they haven't yet.  My question is, is there a certain time when they legally can't take those hours off my paycheck, or should I keep expecting them to take off those hours?  It's just that it's throwing a wrench into my budget to keep expecting them to take off hours.

Don't know for certain.  Here is my advice.

1) At this point you have no ethical responsiblity to keep point out their mistake.  Hopefully they will just let you keep the money.

2) Take that amount of money and leave it in the bank.  (Or your sock draw).  That way if the deduct it you have the money.  If they don't fix their mistake within a year you can feel safe they aren't going to.  (NOT based any legal right, simply big companies are bad a fixing mistakes)

At least you're being honest, which should go a long way in your boss's eyes.

Agree with Hoodie. You have done your job informing them of the oversight. Put the money in a safe place and don't touch it for awhile. If they end up taking it out of your check, then you have the money set aside to replace it. If not, then when you quit working for them, the money is yours.
