Title: Goat Trailer - Bills
Post by: Dave Gray on November 16, 2012, 01:08:41 pm
I have trouble getting people to pick one person in the Shame of the Game thread, so I'm making this separately.

Pick one person's name to be on the Goat Trailer this week.

I say Nolan Carroll.  Our defense, as a whole, wasn't awful, but he made no plays and gave up multiple penalties that extended drives.

If he made no plays they would have resulted in TDs. We have plenty of people on offense who actually made no plays.

I still say Ireland as it's his fault we lack so much talent.

I voted for Jonathan Martin in the other thread.  I'm sticking with that.

Mike Sherman for me.  This offense did not show up.

IMO, it's silly voting for anyone who disk actually play a down. Makes more sense to vote for actual players. Tannehill gets mine. -EK

You going to pick Ireland after every game?  That's a cop out IMO.  They've won games with this team, and are now losing them to inferior opponents.  Jeff Ireland didn't throw any int's or miss any tackles against the Bills.

Nolan Carroll is the best pick.

Ultimately we do not have the talent to compete. You can't complain about not having cake if you only have the ingedients for an egg sandwich.

If Jeff Ireland can trade the team for an egg sandwich, I say "pull the trigger".

Funny - I've had cake 4 times this season.  No reason why we can't have cake again, especially when the other team doesn't even have eggs.

The defense holds the opponent to 4 field goals, shuts them out in the 2nd half, and it's a defensive player you're picking?  Meanwhile, the offense is made completely one-dimensional by the team ranked dead last in run defense.

My vote is for Mike Sherman.

^^ Every time they mentioned Nolan Carroll's name, he was getting flagged for a penalty.  And they were big ones.  Every one of them came with an automatic first down.  I'm estimating a total of 60-70 yards in penalties just on him alone.  And he was covering some scrub receiver the entire game, not even their best wide-out.

Yes, he is deserving.

Not that your pick isn't deserving as well.  Your points are valid and equally as baffling.

Edit - now that I've looked it up...
4 penalties, 56 yards, and 4 automatic 1st downs from Nolan Carroll.
One of them directly led to points because it was a 3rd down that didn't get converted and the drive was extended by a Nolan Carroll PI call.  The drive led to a FG.

Brian, by your own analysis, Nolan Carroll's horrible play led to 3 points... in a game MIA lost by 5.

The problem was the offense, not the defense.

You mention that "every time you heard his name, he was getting flagged."  You don't hear the name of an OLineman when the opposing D makes a tackle in the backfield.  You don't hear the name of an RB when he fails to make someone miss or break a tackle.  You don't hear the name of the offensive coordinator when his schemes are unable to create running lanes.

You don't think the game is a bit different in the end if they need a FG to win instead of a TD?

I don't dispute that the offense was inept.  I agree.  Has been for almost 3 games now.  But I feel that its more in your own control to NOT commit dumbass penalties (especially after being flagged previously) than it is to be "better on offense" - there's a component of opposing-defensive play that makes that tougher.

In some ways it's easier to give the SotG to Carroll because he stood out on defense, playing head and shoulders worse that anybody else. On offense, the blame was spread over pretty much everyone.

The OLinemen let the defenders simply run by them, and it's "great play by the Bills' defense."
If Carroll does the same, he's bashed as the primary reason we lost.

It's not like Carroll was being called for off-sides or 12-men.  His penalties potentially prevented TDs.  Now, he should still be criticized for getting beat by his man and putting himself in a position to need to commit penalties... but at the end of the day, his penalties resulted in 3 points.

The offense was lined up against the worst run defenders in the league and they did nothing.  That's totally inexcusable.  Just because they avoided making obvious blunders, that doesn't absolve them of blame.  If you commit zero penalties and zero turnovers but lose a game 9-6, that loss is not on your defense.
