In a related topic to the HC's on the hot seat, this is a thread on possible replacements, from retreads to up and coming stars.

Aside from the guys that always get talked about like Gruden, Cowher or Billick, there are other choices. In fact, I am pretty sure that today was Mike Holgrem's last day in Cleveland.

Who do you like?

I am not a fan of picking up 1) coaches that have seen great success in the NFL already or 2) coaches that have been around in the NFL forever, bouncing around from team to team.  I would also avoid 3) NCAA "supercoaches".  So much of the NCAA is about recruiting.  I would avoid a really big name coach from a really big name school.

I think that the two better options are 1) coaches that have made the most of their limited stay in the NCAA (not necessarily the best teams, but guys that have gotten a lot out of their roster) or 2) guys that have showed long-term promise as assistants in the NFL.

As much hype as San Fran's coaching staff has garnered lately, I won't be surprised if we lose a couple of our assistants to head coaching gigs soon. I am pretty convinced that our OC, Greg Roman, will make an excellent NFL head coach.

I've heard somewhere on TV during one of the thanksgiving day games that Mike Holmgren is the top choice to coach at Dallas next year. 

Sean Payton probably will not be coaching the Saints. 

Chan Gailey is likely going to be replaced in Buffalo next year, quite possibly by (don't choke) Dave Wannstedt.

Todd Bowles will be the new head coach of the Eagles. 

Crennel will be out of KC.  I'm going shot in the dark and saying Mike Singletary replaces him.

Mangini will be back.  Probably in San Diego.

I'm going to put Herman Edwards in charge of the Browns next year just because I'm out of names.

I don't see how any recognizable coach would want to work for Jerry Jones at this point.

I would lay money on Payton being back in NO. They left an empty seat for him in the team photo this year and I heard they all wore his signature visor. It seems to me the organization is planning on keeping him.

I think that's more perception than reality. The Dallas fans/media LOVE to blame EVERYTHING on Jerry Jones. The fact is that it's the players on the field that aren't getting the job done. Now you can say that Jerry Jones the GM is not finding the right players and I won't disagree, but I don't know that would stop a coach from wanting to coach for Jerry Jones. Jerry is definately a hands on owner, he is the GM afterall, but I don't think he's anymore hands on then then say a Jeff Ireland is. Ireland wouldn't tell Philbin how to coach, I don't really believe that Jerry tells his coaches how to coach either. He certainly is involved in evaluating players and coaches, but so is Jeff Ireland. That's what the GM does.

If you are going to coach in Dallas, then you have to like the type of players that Jerry gravitates toward which are high profile, high upside, low character, low football IQ types of guys (think Dez Bryant). He falls in love with fast 40 yard times etc and not your bring your lunchpail, grind it out, just good football player types of guys. If you don't have a problem with that, then I don't see why you would have a problem coaching in Dallas. In my opinion a LOT of the problems in Dallas are with the players and the coaches under performing and NOT with Jerry, but Jerry gets blamed for everything. It's a convenient excuse, but not necessarily a correct one.

Agree. No doubt in my mind Payton goes back to N.O. maybe with a raise. Brees just loves him as do the other players.

Even Jones does not have enough money for Holmgren to embarrass himself working for Jones.
