Title: The New Orleans Pelicans
Post by: Thundergod on December 05, 2012, 02:04:26 pm
http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports.com/2012/12/04/report-new-orleans-to-change-name-from-hornets-to-pelicans/

The NBA is chock full of stupid nicknames, well, add one more. Just heard that New Orleans is about to change their name to the Pelicans. My immediate reaction, LOL. I'm pretty big on logos, unis and such, so I had to share. I really hate the collective thought process of nicknaming teams according to their cities and surroundings...but that's just me.

Peilcans? Serioulsy. No.

I didn't think teams could just change names mid-season.  They're like 20 games deep into the season, and going to change now?

I don't get the urgency.

And of all things, PELICANS?  Wow!

And of all things, PELICANS?  Wow!

A cute limerick poem I learned in grade school:

A wonderful bird is the Pelican

His beak can hold more than his Belly Can

He can take in his beak, enough fish for a week.

And I'm sure I don't know how the Hell He Can

Side note: Perhaps the most annoying team name in pro sports is the Utah Jazz.  (It should be the New Orleans Jazz).  Utah should find their own name.

Didn't that franchise start off in New Orleans, hence the Jazz name?  They should just switch nicknames with New Orleans.  Either that or give New Orleans the Jazz name and take on a name that has to do with Utah, such as the Utah Avalanches.

I read this yesterday and was scratching my head as to why on earth they couldn't come up with something better than Pelicans!!!!! That is horrible and if I were a Hornets fan I would probably protest this pretty hard.

Awful name.

This almost sounds like a legal issue with the urgency of the name change.

As I understood it the name change wouldn't go into effect until next season.

I went to Los Angeles to visit all their lakes.  Sorely disappointed.   :)

At least the Lakers have a storied history that everyone associates with LA.  It's a stupid name, but in that case, it's almost too late.  The Jazz?  Who cares at this point....change and move on.

But all the great Jazz musicians came from Salt Lake! ;D  I think Utah is trying to overcompensate for a perceived lack of coolness in their state. lol

Seriously, though, this Pelicans name his horrible.  I don't think a name change and a goofy logo is going to bring more fans to the games.  It might increase jersey sales to ironic hipsters, however.

I think it's actually an appropriate mascot, but the name is so choppy and it just roll off the tongue, especially when paired with New Orleans.

Maybe there's a species of pelican they use?   Like Hammerheads vs. Sharks kind of thing.  ...or Diamondbacks.

Are you referring to the people in Charlotte???

I know all the Tennessee Oiler fans were upset when they became the Titans.

The Hornets have been around for a million years... but NOW there's a legal issue?  And its urgent?  Sounds fishy...

Sounds like they're stirring up a hornet's nest.  Pun intended.

The New Orleans Pelicans were a minor league baseball team from 1887-1977.  Tom Benson owns the rights to the name, and with his purchase of the Hornets, they can switch over to a mascot with some history in the city.  That was probably the "legal issue."

It's no worse than the Pittsburgh Pisces (there's two hours of my life I'm never getting back).

The other two names they are reportedly considering are "Brass" and "Krewe".  A Krewe is a group of Mardi-Gras-ers.  I think both of those are considerably better.

I loved that movie.  It's awesomely terrible!  Plus, it's fun seeing Dr. J at the peak of his talent.

The Lakers are actually named after the Lake Trout.  It's one of by far the worst names in pro sports.  If I spend my weekend hunting and butchering it, and it has no menacing quality at all, then it's a stupid ass name.

Dr. J and the kid I was ok with.  The chick from Grease as an astrologer picking basketball games made me wish I was on a 5-state shooting spree.

Both of those are much better and I even heard a suggestion for the Voodoo which I also liked but am guessing would rub people the wrong way and never get chosen either.

Lakers are a carryover from Minneapolis.  Is Lake Trout there or in LA?

From Wikipedia

The Lakers' franchise began in 1947 when Ben Berger and Morris Chalfen of Minnesota purchased the recently disbanded Detroit Gems of the National Basketball League (NBL) for $15,000 from Gems owner Maury Winston. Minneapolis sportswriter Sid Hartman played a key behind the scenes role in helping put together the deal and later the team. Inspired by Minnesota's nickname, "Land of 10,000 Lakes", the team christened themselves the Lakers.

I about died laughing when I heard this yesterday.

Why didn't they go for the Hurricanes as a tribute to Katrina survivors?
Or strike a deal with the University of Louisiana-Lafayette? The New Orleans Raging Cajuns?

Yeah and Minnesota is the land of ten thousand lakes and one really annoying accent.  But guess what the lakes are loaded with...  Stupid puffy lake trout.   :P

I gotta admit. I like the new logos & color schemes for the newly named Pelicans. All 5 of them.
