Title: Dolphins Road to the playoffs.
Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on December 11, 2012, 01:30:11 pm
To make the playoffs here is what needs to happen.

1. Dolphins win all remaining games.
2. Steelers lose to Cowboys and Browns tie with Bengals
3. Bengals lose to Eagles and Ravens tie with Steelers.
4. Jets lose 2 of 3 remaining games.
5. Chargers lose 1 remaining game.
6. Browns lose 1 remaining game.

I wouldn't be making plans for the post season quite yet.  But it is still possible.

There are no ties needed for Miami to make the playoffs.

My above is based on Miami being at least a half game ahead of each team so I don't have to figure out the 9th tiebreaker for Steelers and Bengals.

Provided MIA wins out:

- they have head-to-head against CIN
- if PIT loses two more games, MIA will beat them in either common opponents or conference record

The real tiebreaker problem is SD.  SD will beat any of these teams in conference record if they win out*, and they will also beat MIA on common opponents.  The SD @ NYJ game is a tough game for delusional Dolphin playoff hopes.

edit: To complete the scenarios:

- if MIA wins out, BUF necessarily won't be tied
- MIA would beat CLE in a 2-way tie (common opponents) but lose in a 3-way (conference)
- if NYJ beats BUF, they will beat MIA on tiebreakers (common opponents)

*CLE would beat SD in tiebreakers, based on head-to-head

We have a better chance of the world actually ending after December 21st.  This being said, I never expected Miami to be a playoff team this year.

I'm content with this season.  Not a bad team and, one could argue, Miami has made a good showing for themselves in most every game.

They have surpassed every reasonable fans expectations and then some.

Fans who realize that Ireland is terrible and they have no chance of improving.  Let's keep rolling with the GM who's team has gotten worse every year he has been there.  11-5, 7-9, 7-9, 6-10, 6-10 (if lucky enough to win 1 game).  This is his 5 year here, and his team keeps getting worse and worse.  0 primetime games this year!

MIA @ BUF was a primetime game.

Thurs night game?  I don't consider them primetime games like the Sun or Mon night football game.  mostly bc i don't get the nfl network along with lots of other people.

LOL at this. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but primetime has nothing to do with channel or who gets it/doesn't get it. It's a black and white reference to a time slot- usually 8-11 pm EST, although I've seen it include the 7 o'clock hour as well. -EK

So the dolphins 1 primetime game this year is on a thursday night where the nfl decides to stick the worst of the primetime games.

...starts with Jacksonville. How about they go out and blow them out? That would increase their odds of making the playoffs and increase my confidence level in them actually making the playoffs all at the same time.

IF they got a big time Wide Receiver and some serious help in the secondary, I wouldn't be shocked with 11 wins next season. I am sure the Pats will have 13 because Brady is not done with the deal he made with Satan, but I will take 11 wins and be very happy.

They got the NFC South and the AFC North next year. 2 very tough divisions so the schedule will be very difficult. That's why if they finish in last place this year it wouldn't be awful, add 2 so called cupcakes to the schedule.

If the Dolphins lose to Jax, the odds for the Fins drop from almost nil, to completely impossible.

So what unlikely scenario does MIA need to make the playoffs now?

All I know (or think I know) is the Bengals cannot win a game for the rest of the year and Miami to win out. I'm sure there's about 3 other things that would have to happen as well.

I believe if the Jets win 2 of their last three, Miami would be eliminated as well. Currently (tonight's game pending) Miami is still behind PIT and NYJ. -EK

So you're saying there's a chance....

Mathmatically, yes. That's about it.  ;D

Presuming MIA wins out:

- CIN must lose out
- PIT must lose to CLE (they play CIN next week, so they have to win that)
- NYJ must lose to TEN+SD, or to BUF

The winner of next week's CIN@PIT game will almost certainly be the last playoff team.

Really Miami shouldn't worry about the playoffs, they should just try to win 8 games and prevent this from being the first 4 year streak of below .500 finishes for the franchise ever. That alone would be quite an accomplishment.

Just to have the Dolphins' logo on the screen when they're discussing playoff possibilities with 2 games left is a welcome change.  That hasn't happened since 2008.

In 2009, MIA was 7-7 and in a tie with 5 (!) other teams, one game back of the two wild-card teams at 8-6.  Of course, we all remember how that turned out.

Have a feeling this goes down to the final weekend.

Pitt will squeak by Cincy...while..

Miami crushes Buffalo....

Final weekend?????....could definitely see:

Cincy losing to Baltimore &
Pitt getting swept by an upstart Cleveland team.....now can Miami go into Foxboro and steal one...highly unlikely, but you never know?

^^ Might depend on if the Patriots have anything to play for.  But, knowing Billy B, it won't matter either way.

Unfortunately (?), the MIA, PIT, and CIN games are all scheduled for the same time.  Otherwise, if PIT and CIN both lose, NE would be put in a position of potentially choosing their first-round opponent: MIA if the Patriots win, PIT if the Patriots lose.
