Title: ESPN 's Top 5 TRADE CHIPS (Cam Wake on the list)
Post by: MikeO on December 23, 2012, 06:48:49 pm
ESPN has a list of the top 5 trade chips in the NFL, Cam Wake made the list. Here is there reasoning below. If I'm Miami I wouldn't trade him. If a team offered a high 2nd rounder I would consider though. ESPN says a 3rd+ which I think is nuts honestly. Anyway, here is their logic behind it.

Cameron Wake

Why you shop him: According to the Pro Football Focus grades, Wake has been the most productive 4-3 defensive end in the NFL this season over his 803 snaps. So why sell? Three reasons. One, Wake is 30 and the Dolphins may never be able to create this level of interest in him again. He figures to drop off some in 2013, even if he stays healthy. Two, Wake's backup, Olivier Vernon, has been impressive in a limited role, and could step in at starter without a major drop-off. Three, Wake's deal contains cap hits of just over $12 million combined in 2013 and '14. It's rare to be able to deal a vet for real value without a contract getting in the way. The Dolphins have a promising rookie QB in Ryan Tannehill and have a chance to pile up young talent given their accrued draft picks.

What makes sense: The Dolphins should look for another second-rounder, but a third-plus gives them a lot of draft lottery tickets. They should listen.

Fit: A win-now, 4-3 team dying for a pass-rusher? Maybe New Orleans. Problem is, the Saints saw their 2012 draft gutted.

This actually sounds like the type of personnel move the patriots would make

So, a TOP Trade Chip nets you a 3rd rounder? For a guy under a very reasonable contract for 2 years when you want to compete in those 2 years? No thanks.

I'm with EDGECRUSHER on this.

A 3rd for the "most productive 4-3 defensive end in the NFL this season"?  Why would you trade a top level player for a 3rd round pick, especially when you have a team with limited star appeal and you need to put butts in seats.  You can't just keep trading away your best players.  Even if we aren't in a position to compete at the highest level, you have to have some talent.  On top of that, Wake is a bargain.

I wouldn't trade Wake for a third.  A mid to high first I would consider

I would trade him for Larry Fitzgerald straight up. >:D

It would be silly to consider anything less than a 2nd and a 3rd/4th/5th.  But then again, we do have a silly GM.
On draft day when teams could be desperate, an enterprising GM could turn that into a 1st.

Yes, this does sound like the kind of move that one should make if one has a solid, perennially contending team, with plenty of youth in the pipeline to step up and replace productive veterans.

I think you can see where I'm going with this...

I bet Jeff Ireland could get Chicago to take Wake for a 3rd Rounder after the way he suckered Da Bears into taking Brandon Marshall for two 3rd Rounders

They aren't going to trade Wake. Out of the 5 names ESPN listed the ONLY two names that will probably be traded are Maclin and Flynn. The others are unrealistic (like Adrian Foster and Cam Wake and Kirk Cousins)

I guess it depends on how the Dolphins view the future.

IF the dolphins feel 2013 has a real potential to be their year to win the superbowl absolutely don't trade him.

But if the Dolphins figure it is going to take until 2015+ to have a realistic shot to win the SB (time to develop Tannehill and put together other pieces of the pie along with letting Brady get closer to retirement) then it make sense to trade him for either a player or pick that will help them win the big prize.
