Title: A great loss for the NFL today :(
Post by: dolphins4life on April 16, 2013, 06:04:24 pm
Football and Broadcasting Legend Pat Summerall passed away.

I loved listening to his voice on FOX.

RIP

He was a great broadcaster and he and Madden were outstanding together!

"Thanks, John." Hopefully he's up in the broadcast booth in the sky.

Watched a lot of games he did through the years. He was one of the best.

I will always miss him and John Madden calling the games together.  That was the greatest broadcasting tandem that ever lived.

My prayers go out to his family.

True dat.  +1 x infinity

That being said, he lived one of the craziest, alcohol filled lives in NFL history for much of his life.  That he died at the age of 82 is a miracle and only adds more to his legend in my mind.  This man literally defined how we all viewed football...and had some HOF worthy drinking stories.

I don't mean to speak ill of the dead, but I wasn't much of a Summerall fan.  Especially in the last 5 years, he wasn't fit to be in the booth.  My memories of him are usually mocking him, which is too bad.

I've been debating saying anything and since someone broke the ice I will speak up. Summerall and Madden were unwatchable. The worst was seeing Madden on Thanksgiving talking about the damned six legged turkey. Shut up or give me something meaningful to listen to.

I liked Summerall and Madden, better than many other announcers.

The last 5 to 10 years were pretty bad for Summerall, but he gets credit for being awesome the rest of his career.

Madden was great in the beginning, but once he got a name for himself then he totally went over the top and after that point I couldn't watch him anymore. In the early days it wasn't all about turkey legs and Madden teams and all that BS, he just announced the games in a very entertaining way.

Speaking of Madden. Didn't Summerall do some voice over work on some of the Madden football games ? I can swear that I remember him on one or two of them. Maybe it was someone else though.
