Title: Rumor:Devone Bess trade
Post by: bsfins on April 24, 2013, 07:33:20 pm
A tweet retweeted by BenVolin...
@BenVolinPBP: RT @seankjensen Browns seriously considering a trade for Dolphins WR Davone Bess, according to a league source. Several teams in the mix

Well, at least if he goes to the Browns, MIA doesn't have to worry about a repeat of Welker...

Unless MIA can get a second-rounder, I'd rather they keep him.  I don't think MIA is likely to pick up a better player in the third.

He is in the final year of his deal and has no guaranteed money. If they get a 5th I would be happy. I don't see him having a 2nd round value. Browns don't have a 2nd rounder and I doubt they will want to trade their 3rd rounder.

IF they trade Bess it makes me believe that Eifert or Austin would be the pick at #12. Going to need another weapon in the passing game.

I am NOT against a trade because he is going to walk at the end of the year and Miami has no chance to re-sign him. So get something for him now instead of nothing when he leaves as a FA.

Sources tell me 99.9% receiver Davone Bess from Miami to Cleveland Browns for mid round picks.

He was in danger of being cut anyway because of Gibson, so if they get a 5th rounder for him and a bit of cap space? Hell yeah. I liked Bess, but Miami clearly has no plans for him.

I was running out the door,Ben later tweeted (about Bess specifically)
Probably a 3rd-5th round pick? RT @Hamilton_RTM: @BenVolinPBP What do you think we can get for him?

Can independently confirm that #Browns are interested in trading for Davone Bess, although source indicates sides aren't close right now

Dolphins desire to trade Bess, potentially to Browns, shouldn't surprise anyone. He was No. 1 on our Most Wanted list
Link to blog linked in above tweet...PBP blog post by Ben Volin (http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thedailydolphin/2013/03/29/analysis-top-5-veterans-in-danger-of-not-sticking-with-the-miami-dolphins-in-2013/)

Interesting side note that the Dolphins play at the Browns in Week 1. Would be weird to see Bess in Brown

I'm torn I like Bess, but understand....I hope we can get as much as possible for him..

Armando brings up a good point in that Miami might be targeting Ryan Swope in the draft to take Bess' spot. That would make a lot of sense. Remember that Swope ran a 4.3 so he's just as fast as Austin, is bigger and has played with Tannehill and for Mike Sherman. Plus he'll be available in the second round and maybe beyond. Seems like a perfect fit.

This, folks, is why I hate regime changes.  This, the Jake Long thing, the Reggie Bush thing.  All stink of Philbin wanting "his guys," and not taking over the existing people.  I'm amazed Hartline got re-signed, at this rate.

There's no reason to believe Bess couldn't be here long term, if he wanted to.  He got a deal 2 years ago.  Its obvious that the staff is disappointed that he missed the end of last season with that back injury, and don't want "guys like that" on the team.

Personally, I love Bess, he's got good hands over the middle and just makes plays.  I watch a lot of football, and I've never even heard of this Gibson guy.

I think you are reading too much into it Brian. Bess has been solid but certainly far from a game changer. Long and Bush could have been gone just as easily if Sparano was here. I hate free agency in the NFL because to stay competitive you have to constantly look to better yourself and we haven't been doing that.

I don't think Philbin was disappointed with Bess at all, I just think that Philbin wants guys that can play all the WR positions. Bess is a great slot guy, but he's not that great on the outside. I think the feeling was that Bess was only going to be with Miami one more year, they weren't going to resign him, so getting a draft pick for him this year was better then him playing a year and then leaving.

Personally, I love Bess, he's got good hands over the middle and just makes plays.

That's probably because you don't watch St. Louis much. Go watch some game tape on Gibson, especially the game against Miami. He's an up and coming player and I'm not sure why St. Louis didn't try to keep him really. I don't know that he'll be better then Bess, but he might be. Before this trade I didn't think Miami was going to take a WR in the draft, at least not in the first couple of rounds, however if they trade Bess, I think that all changes. Maybe they really like a WR but don't think they'll be room for him on the roster with Bess, so trading Bess for draft picks makes room for the rookie and gives them another draft pick in the process. That's not such a terrible idea. I'd like to wait to see what Miami does over the next couple of days before condemning this trade.

Here's what I don't understand about STL:

- Bradford was a RotY
- NE apparently thinks Amendola is better than Welker
- MIA apparently thinks Gibson is better than Bess

So why has STL finished 21st, 30th, and 18th in passing yardage the last 3 years?

^^ No, didn't say that.  But I'd rather we don't ditch Philbin after 2 bad seasons also.  Some people think ditching a coach every 2 years until you win some games is the right way to find a coach.

Title: Re: Rumor:Devone Bess trade

I like Davone Bess, and hope that he continues giving his same "gritty but consistent" slot production wherever he ends up.  That said, I understand the roster dynamics involved in this kind of decision, and agree completely with getting whatever you can in a trade, rather than just cutting him loose. If Miami could get a 5th or 6th round pick...I'm on board.

who's talking about firing Philbin?

Hell Sparano got 4 years and an extension before he was fired

Title: Re: Rumor:Devone Bess trade

bottom line is Miami just gave big money deals to Wallace, Hartline, Gibson. They aren't going to give a 4th big money deal to ANOTHER WR. A 4th WR on this team.

Get something/anything for your 4th WR now...or let him walk and get nothing in a year. Makes perfect sense to trade him now!

I've seen plenty of feedback from "fans," both here and elsewhere, that say things like "if we don't make the playoffs this year, we should fire Philbin and try again!"

The same can be said for firing Jeff Ireland.  If you think we bring in a new GM and not a new coach, you're mistaken.

^^ terrible example. You want your team to be run like the NY Jets?

Carolina kept Ron Rivera and fired their GM this offseason. Giants in 2007 when Jerry Reese replaced Tom Acorssi we didn't see a total house cleaning and the Giants were not good in 2006. We had this exact debate a few months back (and I don't want to have it again on the night of the draft), it happens MORE than you think.  People just don't realize it and always think of the "total house cleaning".

I don't know where you are hearing Philbin will be fired this year if the Fins don't have some great season, but you should probably not listen to people who have no clue what they are talking about. Philbin is safe in Miami beyond this season short of going 0-16 or 1-15!

For former Dolphin WR Davone Bess, MIA and CLEV swapped draft spots in two rounds, including the 4th rd. There were no actual pick given up.

So no picks changed hands. Miami just bumped up spots in a couple rounds

Philbin didn't like him. Doesn't fit the offense. Sat out the final 3 games when the coaches thought he was healthy enough to play.

They hand picked his destination instead of cutting him and letting him sign with Pats, Jets, or Bills who all need WR's. If you are cutting him anyway might as well get anything for him!

It wasn't nothing, they traded him for almost $3 Million of cap space. That would've went to a guy who would've seen 80 snaps all year.

how is it nasty? Bess just got a 3 year extension. He didn't have to agree to it. He could refuse it, Browns then don't trade for him. Miami cuts him and he is a FA.

Nothing nasty in the least

And the player they got in the 5th round as part of the Bess deal... RB Mike Gillislee, from UF. I heard at least one or two analysts talk about Gillislee as being one of the top-5 RBs in this draft, so maybe Miami finds a diamond with this late pick.

Philbin likes WR's that are interchangeable. Bess is just a slot guy, he is a one dimensional WR. Now he is a terrific slot guy, don't get me wrong. But he can't play the outside, can't go deep. He didn't fit Philbin's offense. Period.

Funny how this "Doesn't fit Philbin's offense" justification only shows up after they get rid of him.

I guess they also drafted a replacement LG because Philbin can't fit the currently existing Pro Bowl LG into his offense, either?  Getting tired of this "Philbin guy" routine.

You combine that with him being in the dog house for not playing the final 3 games and that's why Bess is gone. It's not just 1 reason, its many. Well actually its 3. Last year of his contract, being in the doghouse, and not being a WR that fits Philbin's system.

Once Miami gave contracts to Wallace, Hartline, and Gibson there was no chance Bess would get a new deal here. Just wasn't going to happen

Title: Re: Rumor:Devone Bess trade

I can't picture Philbin holding a grudge because Bess didn't want to play hurt in the last three garbage games with the playoffs already out of reach. That would be a pretty dick reason. I'm more inclined to accept the "one trick pony" price tag concept. Now if it were the Vikings Percy Harvin that we cut loose then I'd be a bit worried. Perhaps if Bess were a little taller and a little faster, he might still be on the team. I liked him a lot and wish him the best, but this team is definitely moving forward without looking back.
