Agreed. I wasn't very happy with that comment either. I was pretty content with his overall performance last season considering what you said. I don't think embarrasing was the right choice of words. Tannehill showed a lot of upside and he's got the weapons this year. Lets just hope that Martin's transition to LT works out and gives Tannehill the blinside protection he desperately needs. Well the comment wasn't specifically directed at RT, he was saying it about the team in general. Considering the Fins turned a couple wins into losses; and the WR corps was abysmal when it came to scoring TD's, I would agree that it was somewhat embarassing. Beyond that one comment I had to go back and read who wrote the article, for a second I thought it must be Andy Cohen. Most of the time, you end up disappointed. Let's not jump the gun yet on Tannehill. I'm not going to say "no excuses." I didn't make excuses last year. That "no protection and no targets" is just BS people say to justify crappy performance. This year, he has upgraded (maybe?) from Bess to Wallace, lost an all-pro left tackle and a workhorse RB. Tannehill is in his second year and might hit a sophomore slump. If he does, all these "expectations" people have will turn into discussions of "Tannehill is a bust" and "fire Jeff Ireland!" Dolphins' fans are fickle and impatient and one interception is enough to make them want to fire the entire team. So, let's not get overly excited about this season just yet, until the question marks are answered. Title: Re: Great article that is CERTAIN to get you excited for The Dolphins this season! Post by: Phishfan on June 28, 2013, 06:27:17 pm ^^^ The loss of Jake Long was the loss of a FORMER All Pro and a back averaging 14 carries a game isn't really what I consider a workhorse but maybe you have a different definition.

So, let's not get overly excited about this season just yet, until the question marks are answered. I agree with some of what you said, I never said he was great or wasn't. I want to see him improve. But I am tired of hearing how we had a crappy year. When it was announced that RT was our starter and had beat everyone else out for the job with the exception of the "back problem" I think that was because he lost the job. Expectations were dismal. Most people on here were predicting two three wins. A rookie QB who played at receiver half his college career was taking the reins. We had an O-line that could not stop a kid from getting in the backfield and no receivers. We had a running game and a defense. Everybody thought we would go 1-15 2- 14 etc.RT earned my respect last season and I don't hold him to any expectations for this year.I hope he will light up the field and the news but what it comes down to is: He is the starting QB for the team I love. If he plays as well as he did last year he will have my support. Should he falter he will still have my support because he earned at least that much last year. And yes the only thing I hate more than a jets fan is a fair weather dolfan. Let's give this kid a chance. And for everyone pissed we didn't resign bush. You are going to be saying bush who cause it's MILLER time. Phillbin kept him hidden last year the few plays he got he lead our running backs.Defense's Don't have tape on him. But they know he is able. Title: Re: Great article that is CERTAIN to get you excited for The Dolphins this season! Post by: Brian Fein on June 28, 2013, 08:01:59 pm I hear you and I agree. But I read these forums every day, and you and I are in the minority. There are people who post on these forums that are sitting silently waiting for a guy like Tannehill to fail. And when he falters, they will pounce. Then the vocal minority becomes the public opinion, ends up showing up at training camp and booing your starting QB qhen he takes the field.
The fan base as a whole appear as a bunch of fickle idiots, where if they don't win the Super Bowl, the season is a failure. Logical people realize that progress takes time. Others think you can go from 1-15 to 15-1 in one season just because someone else did it before. Doesn't make it the norm, and shouldn't be an expectation. I, too, am sick of losing seasons, but I have realistic expectations. Am I happy with Tannehill so far? Yes! Thrilled! I think he's easily the best player we've had at that position since Jay Fiedler (yes, Fiedler, so underrated!). But, is he the next Dan Marino? I don't think so. I think Tannehill, long term, falls somewhere above Ben Roethlisberger and below Eli Manning. But guess what - both of those guys have rings. So, you put the pieces around him and you might have something. Just remember that its his 2nd year and he might stumble this season. Its not a lock that he will be better now, but if he isn't, it doesn't mean he is garbage. Title: Re: Great article that is CERTAIN to get you excited for The Dolphins this season! Post by: MikeO on June 28, 2013, 09:13:37 pm I don't know what people expect out of Tannehill this year if they are thinking 30+ TD's and playoffs or else he is a bust they are in for a rude awakening. To me if we win more games than we did last year. If he throws for more TD's and more yards then I will be happy. This is a process. You see few if any QB's in year 2 win the super bowl. I really don't know what some fans expect this year out of him.
I mean it took Flacco 5 years to really take the leap to a top end/top flight QB. Matt Ryan still struggles some in the playoffs and he has elite talent around him at every position on offense, but you don't see Atlanta ready to throw him to the curb. It took Rodgers years on the bench before he was ready. Andy Dalton barley threw for 100 yards in a playoff game last year (and most came in garbage time late).....Cincy is still rollin with him. They aren't ready to cut bait. This doesn't happen overnight with QB's. It takes time and ya gotta have patience. Even if Tannehill has a little sophomore slump this year. OK, not ideal but he will still be our QB in 2014. Don't fool yourselves. Title: Re: Great article that is CERTAIN to get you excited for The Dolphins this season! I don't think he will have that problem infact I think he will do the opposite. I THINK HE WILL LEAD NFL IN PASSING YARDS. Thats right you heard it hear first. He will be in top ten if not and I would bet on it.Brian keep up the good work I agree with everything. My dad built the stairs for stadium it means something to me.I can't wait for the season to start. I think other than the first game 5 sec bio we dont see RT. I am hoping for the season and honestly to change the name of this site? If this was my site I would be ready!Ok I'm lying but if the dolphins do well still got to change the name Title: Re: Great article that is CERTAIN to get you excited for The Dolphins this season! Most impressive turn around I can recall is 1-15 (one overtime win from going winless) to 11-5 and division title (on the 6th tiebreaker). Title: Re: Great article that is CERTAIN to get you excited for The Dolphins this season! Post by: BigDaddyFin on June 30, 2013, 06:31:27 pm I agree that expectations should be a little higher, but I don't agree with Brooks' assessment 100%.
I expect Miami to contend for and attain a wild card this year. That's about it. Talk of winning the division is a little lofty considering Miami hasn't consistently beaten New England for awhile now, and if you want to get serious about a division title, you better beat the Patriots at least once. 10-6 wins a wild card (most seasons) and that's what I expect of them. Who knows if we knock the Patriots around a little and get another win we might even finish 12-4 and win the division, but I'll stay with 10-6 for now. I expect Tannehill to be improved. His accuracy should be better and it's not unreasonable to put him in the 3500 yard/25 TD range. Brooks makes no mention of our defense, particularly in the secondary where our pass defense was a revolving door. I believe it will be better this year, but how much? I'd feel better going in if we had one more playmaker there. This is sort of related: We didn't force many turnovers last year. Improvement here I think will make the offense that much more explosive. The kicking game. I'm glad we brought a rookie in to push or maybe even replace Carpenter. The one thing on offense that is as destructive as a turnover is a missed field goal. I'm slow to jump up Carpenter's ass because a lot of the kicks he missed that we needed were over 45 yards, certainly not easy. Hopefully with an improved offense those kicks will be 30 yarders and touchdowns now. Title: Re: Great article that is CERTAIN to get you excited for The Dolphins this season! Carpenter is gone Title: Re: Great article that is CERTAIN to get you excited for The Dolphins this season! Sturgis has this job this year, Carpenter will be gone by the middle of training camp Title: Re: Great article that is CERTAIN to get you excited for The Dolphins this season! Post by: Brian Fein on July 01, 2013, 08:39:18 am ^^ As long as he doesn't stink up the joint. You gotta do what's right for your team. If Sturgis goes into camp and routinely misses from 40+ then I can't see him making the team. Drafted or not.

Sturgis will get the nod and they will see how it goes. Save about $4 mill in cap space. Then by mid-season if he stinks they will cut him and find someone else. They aren't paying Carpenter that huge contract this year. Not after the year he is coming off of. The only reason they haven't cut him yet is because they need an extra leg for training camp so it doesn't hurt to have him around Title: Re: Great article that is CERTAIN to get you excited for The Dolphins this season! My big questions are about our defense though. Not worried so much about the Offense because unlike past couple years, AFC east will be won on Defense not on Offense. The patriots silently have one of the best young, mature minded defenses in the NFL. Luckily for us though, the bills and jets are in shambles, and our schedule should be easier then the pats over all. |
