Title: Sharknado
Post by: Brian Fein on July 14, 2013, 04:39:03 pm
I didn't understand why this movie was getting so much social media attention.

...until I watched it.

Has anyone seen this?

I thought it was just another cheesy low budget SyFy creature flick. What about it made it so social media-worthy?

I'm not sure.  It was definitely that which you said it was, but Twitter was on fire when it was airing.  I read something like 5000 tweets per minute.

To me, it got to the point where it was so unrealistic and cheesy that it got to be hilarious by the end.  Even though there was nothing seemingly intended to be comical.

^^^ I pulled up a 2-minute promotional trailer shortly after asking the question earlier.  I made it 43 seconds in before I thought "why am I watching this crap?"

Maybe the 5000 tweets a minute were all people saying "Why am I watching this crap?"

Maybe.

I compare it to Snakes On A Plane.  Theatrically one of the worst movies ever written, but somehow has a cult following.

Right in the first scene a guy gets eaten by a shark that jumped into a boat and you think "how unrealistic..."

I wanted to watch this so bad, but I don't have cable. Hopefully I can catch it streaming.
Why do I want to watch it? The same reason  I watched that awful Lindsay Lohan Elizabeth Taylor flick. I LOVE awful movies. Especially those made just for TV. Lifetime movies are my jam!

I haven't seen it but I heard an Ian Ziering interview the other day.

I don't think Sci Fi has to be too serious to begin with but when people like Mia Farrow, Elizebeth Banks, Will Wheaton and Danny Zuker start tweeting you've probably got millions of people who now have to stop and look at the train wreck.

Social media has really shrank the world in which we live. Probably more than even the smart phones themselves. It's a game for my daughter's friends to get famous people to retweet or respond to their tweets. And to think we thought the Kevin Bacon game was cool?

I agree completely. I can't watch anything on that channel. It all seems cheesy and low budget to me.

Some of my nephews really like the "so bad that it's good" genre.  There's a movie called Troll 2 that is beyond awful.  I saw quite a bit of that.

I just don't get it.

As a teen I sat through a movie called TerrorVision with my best friend. Words cannot describe.

I heard the buzz, actually heard Tara Reid saying she'd be up for Sharknado sequel, before I think the movie even aired...It's how I first heard about Sharknado.Didn't watch it,nor do I have any plans to see it...

I like cheesey movies,T.V. movies that lean soap opera-ish,not so much.So I'm not fond of the made for T.V. movies at all....I liked the Troll (the first one),Critters,Killer Klowns from outer space, the Blob, even some of the later Meatballs movies...

Grim for me was the all time worst movie, that I can think of...

It was either Sharknado or BangBus Volume IV for Tara Reid...the jury is still out regarding which one would've been better.

^^^ They could combine the two for the sequel: BangBusnado, where people get killed by hookers falling out of the sky.
