I picked up the guitar about 14 yrs ago. Not saying I'm stage ready by any means. But if you have patience, its a cool hobby to have. Its relatively cheap. And gives you a sense of accomplishment over time.

Agree, a musical instrument.  Guitar is a good one.

Video games. So many games with great stories, they're like interactive books. And in some cases some games have put some Hollywood movies to shame in terms of writing and story. If you're the new fangled type of gamer who only loves the multiplayer side of games. There's plenty of crack to choose from.

Guns, girls, and guitars are always good hobbys. Always keep a few of each around. If you're single of course. If not, still get the guns and guitars ;D

Girls used to be my hobby but not so much anymore :(

That's actually why I started this thread

I'm learning to crochet. Not sure if I'm a fan, yet.
Outside of that I run, game, and read.

Spend your spare time reversing the taboo surrounding hugging people one is not acquainted with as a form of greeting.

Seriously, I love that my posts generate this kind of pot-stirring that they carry over to other completely irrelevant threads.

 ;D

I got an idea.  I could become the next spongebob for another team's websites.

What team do you think I should pick?

Read books. I recommend the game of thrones series.
Game?  Try Tera, it's free to play and download on CPU.
My favorite hobby is fishing.
Painting. You don't even have to be good at it and it can be relaxing.
All else fails, you can be a massive alcoholic.

I used to use weightlifting as a major hobby but now it's starting to take a toll on my body

just pick something constructive that you can use to better yourself.  I was going to recommend gaming, but that's not really constructive (no offense, gamers).

Its always nice to learn a new skill.  What interests you?  Photography?  Art?  Travelling?  Scuba diving?  Running?  You have to determine what interests you, and prepare to spend money on it.

I would recommend something that improves your mind and something that improves your body -- so, some sort of sport/exercise with a routine and then some kind of creative outlet -- writing, music, art, photography, etc.  It doesn't really matter what as long as you create goals for each.

World of Warcraft.
This.

If you're a lonely person and you want to kill time, nothing is better than an online RPG.  And it's pretty damn cheap compared to most other hobbies.

Actually, I would agree with you. But I would put real life interaction with people at the top of the list. Working out, playing an instrument, hitting the shooting range, sports, or even playing pool in some local tournaments. Doesn't matter what it is as long as it interests you and you are around people with the same interests. I wouldn't suggest sitting home alone playing video games or drinking. Time alone is good, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone that is lonely and doesn't have many hobbies. Hey, I got an idea. I'll assume that you're single. In addition to picking up a hobby involving other people. For the next 60 days, go on as many dates and bed down as many different women as you can afford to. That should keep you busy ;)

My recommendation is to find a local charity group and do volunteer work. Whether it is a Habitats for Humanity type, a local animal shelter, or any other worthy cause...something where you can get out, be around other people and do something positive for your community. You'll find that it will not only help you develop new friends and social circles, but makes for a great psychological counterweight for those times when you start getting down on yourself.

playing pool in some local tournaments.

I would not suggest this unless you have some experience. I'm an active pool player and have been to Vegas to play in the singles championship tournament. At least around my area, unless you are pretty accomplished or find a place with only lower skill level players in their tournament you are just donating money. Hell I walk out empty handed more than I win. From what I know about D4L he is a fairly frugal guy.

D4L, it sounds to me like you might be getting into one of your moods again. I think the issue is less finding a new hobby and more about getting past this most recent hump. You really need to get over this constant search for a relationship. You made a post a few weeks ago about what a good place you were in and now it seems doom & gloom again. Get with some of those friends you talk about, just as friends with no other expectations, and see what advice they give. They'll know you better than we will but I really think some of this stuff stems from a constant search for a mate.

I thought I was in a good place, but things started to fall apart again.  Won't go more into the details.

Stroke, you may have a good point.  When I battled loneliness and depression in college, I did a lot of volunteer and community work and loved it.  I will start looking into some volunteer events around my community.

I am afraid to talk about issues with my friends, because I feel they will leave me if I rely on them too much for emotional support.

Carrying people on my back is still kind of a hobby for for me and a fun one at that.   ;D  I actually set a new high last month.  My friend who weighs 246 pounds and I carried her 65 yards down a football field.

Anyway, thanks again for the advice everybody, it really helps.

So I wound up getting hooked up last week and now I feel a lot better.

It seems my mood depends on how my okc dates are going.
