I'm expecting to hear people are opposed to my stance since the Heat are one of the teams in this discussion but I think the idea of putting player nicknames on the back of NBA jerseys is stupid. First of all, we don't even refer to all these players by nicknames. Second, it sounds too And1ish. This is not the bush leagues David Stern. Get your head out so you can get some fresh air and see the light.

it's common in soccer tho.. as is ads on the front of jerseys . .something else the league may look into .. team sponsorships on the jerseys.

I think this is a terrible idea, and I'm shocked that its even a discussion.

Rod Smart.  And I agree that this is a terrible idea.  It's gonna "thugify" the league

I don't like the idea.  If you want to got to the trouble of legally changing your name to Ochostinko or whatever, go for it.  But use the person's legal name. 

"He Hate Me" made him famous so in his case it was brilliant. The jersey was the XFL's best seller.

One year we played softball for three games under the name "Need a Sponsor".  By our 4th game we had a sponsor and it came directly from the free advertising in the local newspaper. "Need a Sponsor" beats Del-Air 14-7 and so on.  They went on to sponsor us for three years.

I'm fine with the idea. But I believe it should be done during the All Star game. Its an exhibition anyways. And if you're a rookie or a 1st time  All Star, you should have "Rookie" on your back.

That I think is brilliant --- for local teams.

But imagine what would happen if we allowed it in the NFL.  Players would start selling the rights to their nicknames.

"This week on MNF the Greenbay Packers QB StateFarm DoubleCheck will take on Papa John and the Denver Broncos."   No thanks. 

"See Sir Charles and the Sixers. Take on His Airless and the Bulls." Some of you act like you've never heard that before. Nicknames are used in promos, during interviews, and during the play by play. I
The only difference is that the players would be allowed to put that on their back. They didn't choose their surnames.

Yes, but if it is formalized, the back of a player will become prime real estate.  Don't expect to see King James on the back of Lebron's shirt but what ever sponsor is willing to pay the most money to buy his nickname. 

This cracked me up!  Probably because I could see it happening.

The good part:
- Jersey Sales
- You should be able to be called whatever you choose, in my opinion.  It's your life.
The bad part:
- Guys like Lebron will fall out of favor.  He will put King James on his jersey and it will fuel the haters, calling him cocky.
- Who chooses which names are acceptable?  Can you be AK47?
- What about players that don't have nicknames?  Do you give nicknames to deep bench guys?


I think that the All-Star game is a good place for this, if you're going to do it at all.  And then, if you want to sell team jerseys with these names, fine -- but not in a regular game.

The Marlins sold player t-shirts with the players' Twitter handles on the back.  Like it would say @LoMoMarlins" on the back and number 5.

This is just stupid. It just dumbs the feel of the league down to And1 or the XFL.

Technically, AK47 does work for the guy who already has that nickname. Andrei Kiralenko.
