Title: Crazy personal story.
Post by: Dave Gray on November 06, 2013, 10:22:04 am
My sister-in-law's parents were both found murdered in their home:
http://miami.cbslocal.com/2013/11/05/foul-play-suspected-in-deaths-of-elderly-deerfield-beach-couple/

Though I wasn't close to them, they were always at every family function.  I'm certainly close to my sister-in-law (very much so) as well as her children.  While I'm not incredibly distraught personally, I certainly hate to see people I care about in so much pain for something so senseless.

What's odd at this point is that there is no info that we're given.  We know nothing -- the cops are releasing nothing, even asking the family to not share what they personally saw with each other.  No cause of death, no details at all.  They are keeping the investigation so close to the vest that we're learning the details from the media, which is its own struggle.

Pretty crazy.

Not odd at all.  Based on probability (nothing personal about you and your family) the odds are a family member is the culprit.  The police doesn't share info with the suspects, unless it benefits the police investigation.

Absolutely, and I understand that.

I'm not upset about it.  It's just hard to see my sister-in-law finding out the brutal nature of the crimes via the Internet, rather than in a controlled environment with police and counselors.

Dude, sorry to hear about this Dave.  It is surprising that they won't even talk to the family, but I guess to them, the investigation  is top priority.

That is pretty crazy... Sorry to hear about your family's loss, and hope they catch the slimebag (or slimebags) who killed them.

So sorry to hear about this.  That's absolutely horrible.

I realize you don't have much info to go on but is there any way it was murder suicide pact?

I don't believe so.  The bodies were not together, the police have said that there are signs of foul play, and are now calling it a double-homicide.

I am glad to hear that they arrested the "alleged" murderer, and if he is found guilty, I hope he gets a rusty needle and lives just long enough to experience a significant amount of pain before taking the express train to Hell.

They say this was not a random act. Has anyone in the family stated they know of this guy or his motivations?

No, not that I've heard.  I think they are leaving the possibility open that he worked with/for someone.  We still know very little in regard to details.

Michael A. Marotta

Why does this name sound familiar to me?

^^^ I thought the same thing but wrote it off as a similarity to Marcus Mariota who playes for Oregon.

^^ That could be it, I thought of that too, but I feel like I've heard that name before.  I Google'd him but no major clues came up...

OK -- so, I'm still gathering and was asked not to speak about certain details.

But at this point, we know that the couple was taped up with painter's tape and stabbed.  The older of the two men used to be married to the male victim's niece.  Apparently he'd been charged with murder before, but I don't know the details.  The two men came to the house earlier in the week and offered to paint the condo for free, but weren't allowed in.  They returned later, robbed and killed them.

If the motive were simply robbery, it seems very risky and brutal, but maybe drugs were involved.

I'm sorry to hear this Dave.

As a former investigator myself, one of the hardest things I had to do was tell family members "I can't tell you anything."  They would wait for you in parking lots, outside your home, office - they know where to find you.  They want answers, tidbits, and they deserve them.  You WANT to tell them things you're working on, however it compromises all areas of everything you're doing.  Loose lips sink ships.  As Hoodie said, the truth / bottom line is the most important thing.

I hope justice prevails for your family in this case.

I ran across this gravedigging.

For an update, both of these guys avoided the death penalty, at least partially at the request of the children of the victims, but they're in jail for the duration.  The trial was finished about a year ago, which was like...10 years or something.  There were a bunch of factors, but if I recall, the defendants turned on each other and wanted to be tried separately so everything slowed up and then COVID halted a bunch of things, as well.

Well that explains why none of the links work. When I first read this I thought it had just happened and only when I got to the last post did I realize this thread is from 2013.

Some of the follow-up links are busted, but that first one is still working for me.

Yeah the first one worked. I was wanting to read the updates that followed and was frustrated that they weren't working.
