Title: Selecting a team captain.
Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on November 08, 2013, 10:55:29 am
Apparently under Philban/Ireland the team captains or "leadership council" is done by public voting.

We know for example that Martin voted for Incognito.  This also means that Incognito and every other candidate knows exactly who voted for and against them.

I have to say I am not impressed with this system.  Maybe it means that Martin at one time thought Incognito was worthy of a leadership role, or maybe it means before the election Incognito threatened Martin into voting for him.  And that is only one problem with the system.  After the vote the winner can reward his supporters and punish those who voted for the other guy.

I, however, might be biased as I have never used such a system, maybe there is an advantage to such a system I am unaware of.

On other hand I do have personal knowledge of the advantages of the secret ballot system.  It comes from my experiences from Boy Scouts.  Most of my fellow scouts were pretty decent, but we had our share of jerks.  One of the jerks ran for patrol leader.  There was 9 boys in that patrol.  The bully managed to "convince" 4 of the smallest/youngest boys to vote for him thru threats.  (I learned this about a month after the election and when everything about him came out he was kicked out of the troop).  However, he lost election 8-1.  (I know this b/c I counted the ballots) The loser did not know the tally and in fact we lied claiming the vote was "very close."  That was standard practice in all blowouts so the loser didn't feel too bad and the winner wouldn't get a swelled head.  Each of the four told him after the election that they had voted for him and he had know way of knowing which one betrayed him. In fact he was so certain that they hadn't betrayed him he accused us of election fraud and misreporting the result.

I have no problem with a public vote in that situation. You are looking for team leaders. Normally it isn't a secret who people look to. After reading current and former players opinions I'm pretty sure Incognito would have been voted either way
