I saw on the news this am that they are also running ads for cheap fares referencing the mayor of Toronto, saying "We're not on Crack" and referencing flying to/from Toronto.

I don't think they have ever ran an ad that is "politically correct."  My favorite is the MILF one.  (Many Island, Low Fares)

Good to see they put effort in their ads since that is the worst airline.  Ever.

Are they unreliable or do they charge a boatload of fees, or both?

Leg-room and fees are what I remember most vividly.  If they could charge you for sleeping I'm sure they would.  Not that you'd be able to since I doubt you're 4 ft. tall with a 28 inch waist.

That's why I fly Southwest.  They don't charge bag fees or even to change your flight

Ya Spirit overcharge checking in my bag to Michigan and charged me $40 more on the return flight for the same bag. Hate them.
