Loss today was extremely devastating, but we still have an excellent chance of making the playoffs.

Cincy plays a banged up Ravens squad with quite a bit on the line.  Cincy wins and assures 3rd seed...avoiding the rested Chiefs.

We beat the Jets with a Ravens loss and we hold all the tiebreakers over both the Steelers and Chargers.

Wild card game would be ore than likely against the Bengals.  You just never know?  LOL

It all comes down to how bad Cincy is motivated. Do they care between the 3 and the 4 seed? Or would they rather rest their own guys and get ready to play whoever and not care who the opponent is.

Miami can still make the playoffs in Baltimore wins.

If baltimore wins, Miami and SD have to win and Miami is in.

If I'm Cincy...I'd much rather knock off the defending champs and face the Dolphins than the Chiefs.  It also keeps you away from facing the Broncos until the AFC championship.  

Mail in the game and Cincy realistically drops to 4th.  Hopefully the biggest motivation for them will be eliminating their rivals.

Wrong...KC already have sealed up the 5th spot...up for grabs is 6.  Baltimore wins and we are out.

They tried that resting shit against the Jets a few years back and got burned for it. I don't think it's a good idea to rest a healthy team right before the playoffs as it makes them out of sync. If the main guys are hurt or they have a bye, then so be it, but not for a Wild Card game.

A win means they face a shitty Ravens, Dolphins, Chargers or Steelers team at home. A loss means they face the Chiefs, who despite being the worst 9-0 tam in history, are not exactly an easy matchup. The Bengals might even be underdogs in that game. So, they have the motivation.

Won't matter though because the Jets will "win one for Rex" while we "stay on the bus for Joe".

If miami, SD and Baltimore wins. They will all be 9-7 (tied for the 6th spot). Miami wins the tiebreaker.

That isn't correct. In a 3 way tie with Baltimore and SD Miami owns the tiebreaker. In a 4 way tie, Pitt would.

So if Miami win they're IN?  I thought Baltimore owned the tiebreaker over us. 

Miami needs to be in a 3 way tie with SD and Baltimore to make the playoffs. Or a 2 way tie with SD.

If the Fins and Ravens win but SD loses, then the Fins are OUT

Question now is...can we rebound and beat the Jets?  Does this team have anything left in the gas tank?

I guess it couldn't get any worse than today's effort.....and at home lately...we've been ALOT better.

Here is another problem for the Fins....if Miami or Baltimore win next week at 1pm. Then SD has no incentive to play hard at 4pm as their season is then over. So even if they are facing KC's backups....SD might just mail it in and not care. Rest some banged up guys and what not.

So that 3 way tie for Miami might be tough to come by

I think with a rookie coach in San Diego..there is ALOT of incentive to finish at 9-7. 

Don't see Charles playing next week...although is backup Kniles Davis is no slouch.

There is "rumor" out there being reported by a few outlets that both the Miami/Jets and Ravens/Cincy games getting moved to 4pm so its played at the same time as the KC/SD game.

So is this summary correct?

If Miami beats the Jets and both the Ravens and Chargers win, Miami is in?

Or

If Miami beats the Jets and the Ravens lose Miami is in?

There is no way Miami can make the playoff without winning next week, correct?

If baltimore and SD lose, miami can still make the playoffs if they lose.

....and Pitt would need to lose.

Incorrect.

If Miami loses, they are out automatically.

^ To clarify, if Miami loses, the Jets will have the same record as they do (8-8) PLUS the Jets will have the tiebreaker over the Dolphins.  And 3+ way tie uses division record FIRST to eliminate the Dolphins.

So, even though the Jets can't make the playoffs, they will kick us out by winning.

If Miami loses, move the franchise to Las Vegas and call them the Rollers.

So as somebody said earlier, if the Ravens and Dolphins both win at one o'clock, the Chargers will be eliminated and have nothing to play for :(

I think Cincy is our best bet.  They don't want to have to play Baltimore two weeks in a row.

The wildcard is so crazy this year.

I have a sad feeling it won't matter what the other teams do. Rex Ryan is a great motivator and he will give some teary eyed speech about this being his last game and wanting to go out a winner and Philbin will give some awful speech about doing our best and it's going to be a repeat of the Buffalo game.

Like someone on ESPN said, Miami didn't even get off the bus for this game. Why will they do it next week?

I had a premonition something like this was going to happen.  After such a draining win against a top team, it's hard to come back the next week.

I'm not trying to polish a turd, because we came out totally flat today and looked really bad all the way around.

That said, the Bills are a bad matchup for us.  I'm much less afraid of the Jets.  We lost to the Bills twice in similar fashion.  We just can't handle their rush.  I think NY at home will be a much easier task.

The other things needed will be more difficult.  We need either Cinci or SD and both might be playing for nothing but pride.

The Dolphins need to focus on beating the Jets.

So in summary.....

Miami makes the playoffs if they win AND

the Ravens lose

OR

the Chargers win.


This means that if the Dolphins win at one this Sunday we will still have something to watch for as the Chargers take on the Chiefs.   

...unless BAL loses at 1PM, in which case MIA is in.

Either way, if Miami wins on Sunday, they are assured to be alive for the playoffs for at least until the end of the SD-KC game.   

KC Star reporting that Andy Reid is treating Sunday's game with KC like the final preseason game. Playing lots of back-ups. And most likely no Jamel Charles at all

Yea, but if Miami needs SD to win, SD will have no real motivation to win since it wouldn't matter to them.

Miami only needs SD to win IF the Ravens win, a Ravens win would force the Chargers to also win to make Miami get a playoff berth.

Yea, but the only reason that SD would need to play to win to benefit themselves, is if the dolphins lost.  If the Dolphins need SD to win, then it means SD has been eliminated from any postseason spot and now has no motivation to win.

I always get a good laugh when I hear that the only time a team is motivated to win is when they're needing a playoff spot. I often wonder whether those people have never played any competitive sports in their life, or if they just have memory issues. I've played enough sports to know that I wanted to beat our opponent every time I took the field or court, regardless of what was at stake.
