Title: Evan Mathis to Miami possibly?
Post by: MikeO on March 12, 2015, 02:35:21 pm
Eagles have given OG Evan Mathis permission to seek a trade, Miami is one of the teams in contact with the agent (Drew Rosenhaus) for Mathis.

Armando is reporting the Fins and Eagles are working on a trade of some sort involving mid-round picks

Whispers of trading Dion Jordan?

They can't afford the salary cap hit of trading him from the way I understand it

What kind of hit?  He's on a rookie contract

He had an initial $20.5 Mil signing bonus, which for cap purposes is spread out over his 4 year contract.  So, if they cut or trade him the cap hit this year would be $6.7 million.  His salary this year is only $2.275 mil, but his cap hit this year is $5.6 million.  He'll definitely be gone next year unless he suddenly has a breakout season, because his base salary goes up to about $3.2 mil, with a cap hit of $6.5 mil; while there will only be about $3.3 mil of dead cap money remaining from his original signing bonus.

If the Dolphins trade Jordan, it eats up, not opens up, cap room.

another o-line option for the Fins

The agent for Mathis has stated the Dolphins are NOT one of the teams in talks with Philly for a trade for him.

Fins did sign JD Walton. Who is a center but will probably be a starting guard for the Fins next year (unless he totally sucks and gets beat out by both Turner and Thomas.)  Provides as back-up for Pouncey as well.  He was rated one of the worst centers in the entire NFL last year with the Giants. Maybe he will be better at guard,...who knows.

Walton has a lot of starting experience but has been mostly terrible.

Can't wait for that training camp battle between Walton and Dallas Thomas. Should be some battle of champions!

Yeah, getting one of the worst centers in the league isn't really what I would call "depth". He better not be competing for a Guard spot.

Unfortunately he will be. And he will probably be starting unless Thomas and Turner become good overnight

Thomas is terrible but Billy Turner may have a shot to be serviceable. Can't have 5 Pro Bowlers on the line, but we have them at LT and Center and James was very good at RT, so just one serviceable Guard should make our line very good.

Unfortunately, that seems like a long shot unless we reach in the first round.

I have to disagree. There are a few outstanding OG prospects in this class that can be had between rounds 2-4. I've talked about the OG from Duke, Laken Tomlinson, up here, and Arie Kouandjio is another who can be had in round 3 that I think could start immediately in the NFL.

CSN Philly's Geoff Mosher reports the Eagles may release LG Evan Mathis if they can't trade him.
PFF's No. 1 guard in 2013 and No. 2 guard last season, we're not sure why the Eagles are so inclined to get rid of Mathis. The Eagles are between $7-8 million under the cap, so they're not desperate for money. Shedding the 33-year-old would save $4.5 million. At 6'5/298, Mathis is an athletic guard and would ideally land in another zone-blocking scheme. Mathis could probably be had for a fifth-round pick. The Rams and Dolphins were linked to him earlier this month.

That is from Rotoworld. He would be a #1 priority. That would give us 4 excellent or high quality O-Line guys, meaning we can afford to have Billy Turner in there as RG. This frees up our draft too to concentrate on our Secondary and WR. If the Eagles want to get rid of him, offer them a 5th rounder and see what happens.

Fins are on a youth movement, not sure they sign a Olinemen on the plus side of 30 who will want a decent sized contract.

I hope Miami would make an attempt to sign him but I doubt they will. I see Mathis ending up in NE at the end of the day

Wouldn't be a long deal, 2 years with an option tops. He is still playing at a high level and it's a huge area of need.

Even if he does end up in NE, then we take their RG that's a free agent. Gotta get someone.

I think the Fins already did, his name is Walton. That was their big FA o-line signing I have a funny feeling. Hope I'm wrong

I think you're right too and that scares me. I have no hope for this season other than I hope Tanny doesn't get paralyzed.
