Title: The Dolphins' Secondary
Post by: fyo on September 23, 2015, 09:53:07 am
The line (and Wake) seem to be getting all the attention, but watching the Jags game, all I could think about was how awful Brice McCain looked in coverage. Poor technique, poor decisions, lucky to not get at least one huge PI called on him.

Was this just a bad game on his part? Is the rest of the secondary part of the problem? Or am I completely mistaken?  :|

My understanding is he got hurt early in the game but was forced to continue playing. He made an awesome INT against the Redskins.

Walt Aikens needs to get up to speed fast.

I thought I had posted but I guess I forgot to save it. McCain was my early pick for the shame of the game but too many others played badly as well. There were times he didn't even look like he deserved to be on an NFL field.

True. Unfortunately he was the best of what was left to play the position. He is the absolute tops on my wife's bad list.

Coyle's read and react 12 yards off coverage is also an issue.

Remember when the Dolphins use to play their corners at the LOS and bump and run? We give the receiver all this room now to get a head of steam and set up his route.

I think I've seen us play consistent bump coverage since Wannestedt.

It seems like we are better against the pass when were jamming at the line instead of playing off. Ive seen them play up and press the WR but not much. Also IMHO I think Michael Thomas is better than Aikens. Didn't Thomas intercept the great Tom Brady with the game on the line four days after signing with us? Was he good when he signed with us and now our coaching staff is making him regress?

Did you mean to say we haven't? Because everytime I look, the Dolphins DBs are 7-12 yards off the LOS. Even if it is 3rd and 3, there goes Brice McCain dropping back 8 yards.

Fins secondary plays a lot of zone coverage. Have for the past 3 years. They draft/sign players who have experience as zone CB's if they can

Yes! Stupid mistake as a result of trying to post from my phone. It really doesn't like the site.

Zone is worthless without a good pass rush. I mean, typically so is man coverage but with zone you're more likely to see breakdowns and guys running around wide open.
