Giants Fumble DIRECTLY cost the team the win. Not sure the other plays directly cost their team the win. Jets weren't beating NE that night. Colts weren't beating NE last Sunday.

Therefore I vote for the Giants Fumble.

There is some sound logic to that. But I voted Butt fumble. 

Biggest bonehead play of all time is Jim Marshall returning a fumble 66 yards the wrong way.

I voted the butt fumble.  It has multiple levels of failure.  The whole time, I'm wondering what's happening.  The more I watch, the less it makes sense. 

It didn't matter in the game, in terms of likely outcome, but as a stand-alone play, it's just so strange to run up the crack of your own player and drop the ball after doing a 3 rollback drop.

The whole thing is crazy.

I chose the Colts. I could care less about results when discussing what is the dumbest play. The Colts tried to outfox what is likely the best prepared coach and best prepared team with a gimmick. A high school team should know how to defend against that play. The formation was terrible. Also, the guy who practiced the play all week and was the key figure (the guy centering the ball) had left with an injury and they still tried the play with someone who had no idea what he was suppose to do in plan B. Terrible decision.

Can we add Tony Romo game winning kick snap bobble vs Seahawks in the playoffs?

Also, can we consider the Florida Gators tackling each other on game-winning fumble returns?

1st one qualifies as other, 2nd one didn't happen in an NFL game

Not a bonehead play guy just dropped the ball on a snap. Bonehead play is more to do with something stupid and only seen once every 20 years or once ever

How about the Seahawks in the Super Bowl?

I will never forget that ever because they could have stopped the Patriots cold.

Or Leon Lett celebrating before he reached the end zone and Don Bebe forced a fumble?

Other than this being a Dolphins message board, i don't see how the buttfumble is the worst of the worst. It was a botched play from the start that unfortunately resulted in a turnover. Personally, I didn't look at the play and say to myself "what the hell are you doing"?

Some good options to choose from, even Tenshot and dolphins4life have some good suggestions. If I could actually vote (not showing up) I'd have have to go with the Colts, that was the biggest wtf moment for me.

How many times in NFL history has a fumble been caused by a player running into his own teammate's butt?

It's the NFL equivalent of an "own goal."

It isn't even close. As a former soccer player I've seen many own goals (even had one go off me once) but only one ever butt fumble.

Wasn't there also a case this season with a player tackling his own teammate on a return? That's pretty boneheaded too. I particularly like the part where he follows up his initial someone slack tackle with some nice aggressive moves. Way to make sure you own teammate is down.

Another notable candidate is the Leon Lett fumble in Super Bowl XXVI.

I remember a long time ago, a kickoff returner for the Steelers(I think) let the ball go like a punt and thought the other team would just down it. I guess he didn't realize that kickoffs were live balls. If I remember correctly, the other team scored a TD. 

Jim Marshall's "wrong way run" against my 49ers back in the 60's is definitely one of the funniest plays of all-time.

This should really be the consensus #1 and I don't even think it's close.  You don't get anymore boneheaded than that.

None of us were alive though. I agree it is boneheaded but I've seen it other times and so much so that I don't know this particular instance off the top of my head.

Kinda depends on your criteria. 

If you use MikeO's than it is not in the running because it didn't impact the game. 

If you go with bonehead by design (as opposed to bonehead in execution) than it doesn't come close to the Colts fake punt.

I went with the one I feel goes best while Benny Hill music plays in the background which is the Butt Fumble.  (helps that I hate the Jets)  Come to think of it a montage of these clips put to Benny Hill music would be great.

Really?  I've known about that play since I was a little kid and seen it in multiple all-time blooper reels, right next to Jose Canceco taking a warning track fly ball off the head and over for a HR .  I always figured it was a well known play.

I've seen this type of play several times, including being at a game live and seeing it happen. This one particular one doesn't stand out if you see it happen over and over. It may be well known and I may even know it if I look at the video, but just hearing that it was a guy running the wrong way doesn't bring a specific picture of this play to mind.
