Right now Brady.   I fully expect Rodgers to surpass him when all is said and done.

Brady is definitely the luckiest quarterback of all time.

Greatest is hard to say. I group all the great quarterbacks in one group and say that I would take any of them and be happy.  Football is a team sport, so it really shouldn't matter if you have Marino, Elway, Manning, Farve, Brady, Montana, Bradshaw, Unitas, etc....

lol

As far as pure physical qb skills... Dan Marino (was there any doubt?  :D)   Peyton Manning @ #2.
Go kick rocks if you think championships should be a measuring stick for great football players. This isn't a one man sport.

I might be in the minority, but I wouldn't even put Brady in the top 5.  Marino, Favre, Manning, Montana, Elway...then maybe Brady.

I think I have to say Brady, at this point, as much as it pains me.  For the longest time, I felt Manning was the better player, and I think that it's true that he's the better pure passer (as is Marino), but in terms of all aspects of the game, Brady takes it.  He makes great, great choices.

You could say Brady is the greatest of all time.

But his Super Bowl wins prove he is the luckiest quarterback of all time.

His Super Bowl wins prove that not only is he an excellent QB, but he is employed by a team with an excellent front office and arguably one of the greatest coaches in NFL history.

...or it could be luck, I suppose.   ::)

really?  He was on the wrong side of what unquestionably was the single luckiest play in super bowl history,  probably the single luckiest catch in nfl history.

Many quarterbacks go their whole careers without having their teammates force an opposing defender to fumble after they throw an interception.  Brady has had that happen at least three times in his career.

Many quarterbacks go their whole careers without having their teams return blocked field goals for touchdowns. Brady has had that happen to him at least twice.

Brady has a winning record in playoff games in which has thrown at least three interceptions (2-1).

Brady has a winning record in playoff games in which he has thrown at least two interceptions (4-3).

Brady has a winning record in playoff games in which his quarterback rating has been below 80 (7-4).

I often wonder if Peyton Manning would have won more than one Super Bowl with Belichek as his head coach.  Dungy made several head-scratching decisions in the playoffs.

One measure of greatness is a truely great player elevated those arond him. Brady has had multiple recivers that also played with other qbs.  Has any of them done better with Brady than the other qb?  Have any done better with the other?

Bledsoe went 0-2 with the same team Brady took to the SB.

Welker did better in NE than Mia orDen.  And Denver has a pretty decent qb in his own right.

Moss did crap in Oakland broke records in ne then did crap again.

Etc etc etc

1.  Bledsoe was very overrated in my opinion
2.  Welker did better in NE than Denver because he's in the twighlight of his career.  Miami had no QB at the time.
3.  Moss was a stud in Min before NE or OAK

I agree he isn't that lucky though...when you cheat, you make your own luck :D

Why are we going to debate who is lucky and who isn't? Since when did lucky become a bad thing anyway? In my experience, the best players generally are lucky. When that swagger is going luck follows.

To me, though if he keeps playing this well this season, he would earn the greatest ever title.

This is not a knock on other quarterbacks, though.

I don't think Marino is the greatest QB of all time, but I think he's the greatest pocket QB of all time. The best QB all time may have been Steve Young who could kill you both throwing the ball and running it. Brady and Montana are very close to Marino, I just think Dan was better getting the ball down the field than either of these guys who both benefitted greatly from being on very good teams for most of their careers and could afford to play it safe and methodically move down the field. Marino was on an average team for most of his career and forced to carry the team the majority of the time. His first couple of years when Miami had a really good defense the Dolphins were head and shoulders above the rest of the league, but then things fell apart defensively and Marino was forced into playing from behind far too often. Had the Dolphins maintained a quality of defense that he had his first couple of years, they would have gone deep into the playoffs annually just like Brady and Montana.

Post by: dolphins4life on November 15, 2015, 10:59:41 pm
Another question to ask is how many Super Bowls would Marino have won if his opponents decided to roll over and literally hand games to him pretty much like they have done with Brady throughout his career.

Even in last year's blowout AFC title game, the Colts handed the Patriots their first two touchdowns with a fumble on a punt return and then on a missed field goal.

Was there ever a time in Marino's career when the Dolphins were Super Bowl favorites?

I think if this is your criteria, Elway is probably the best QB ever.

Keep in mind that Elway took three not-particularly-good teams to the Super Bowl mostly on his own arm and legs.  Sure, they got hammered in all three, but I don't think he gets enough credit for that.  The irony is that he finished his career with the all-important Super Bowl victories (on teams that really didn't even need him) and it seems like he's basically been forgotten.  Normally in the "greatest ever" discussions, you hear the same names:

Unitas
Montana
Brady

And then Peyton and Marino get mentioned as passers but discounted for their lack of postseason success (so much for winning that one title, Peyton).

It seems like there's a tier below where you have Elway, Favre, and Young; QBs that most people consider great but that no one really compares to the top tier.

Title: Re: Who do you think is the best quarterback of all time?
Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on November 16, 2015, 11:41:15 am
While Superbowl wins should not be the end all and be all of judging a QB, it should not be discounted completely "he is one player and it is a team sport"

Several reasons.  A good QB makes his receivers better.  A QB's responsibility goes beyond throwing the ball: he is the leader of the offense, he is responsible for clock management.  He sets the tone for the offense, if the QB gets rattled by being on the big stage the whole team gets rattled if he executes calmly he can calm the whole team.  So yes, I put more on SB wins when judging a QB than I do a right tackle or free safety.

This is a good topic.  I'm sure there were some great QBs before my time.  But I'm going to go with QBs that I've seen since I started seriously watching football.  Watched it as a little kid in the 70s, but by the time I was in high school, I was able to watch it and fully understand it enough to formulate meaningful opinions.  So going with a time period of early 1980's til now, I would probably have to cast my vote for Brady.  And that pains me to say, because I hate the Patriots.  But personal feelings aside, the guy has been so good for so long and doesn't seemed to have slipped one bit.

I think Aaron Rodgers will probably end up in the Steve Young tier.

He's not a compiler and I think it's highly unlikely he's going to run off 3 or 4 more titles.  He'll wind up with something like the all-time highest passer rating, and that's about it.

also all time best td int ratio, and lowest int percentage.   Measures I value above volume yards. Also he plays in a northern outdoor stadium.

Have you seen what he's doing in Tampa?   He's got this team on the cusp of a wild card berth.  They get ten wins (and realistically , the only sure loss is against Carolina) they're in for sure

Mark Sanchez took his team to the AFCCG his rookie year, and he isn't in the discussion.   He is having a good year but your claim is almost as premature as a Broncos fan making the same claim about BO.

Get out with that nonsense. Winston isn't even the best QB in his division. Or the second best. Or even the third best. He's a good player, no doubt. But let's pump the breaks on HOF talk until he's at least one of the better QBs in his own division.

^ Yes.

Don't know if I agree but I think you have a point.

I can almost guarantee that the Eagles' hands team was feeling more pressure than usual to recover that onside kick.

Also, the offense was feeling more pressure than usual to get that first down to run out the clock.

That's what leads to mistakes such as the fumble.

Brady instills this fear in his opponents.

Bull-oney.  He's probably the second best QB in his division right now.  Brees is clearly declining and Ryan will never be more than slightly above average.  Put him in a clutch situation and he'll shit the bed.  As of right now, Cam Newton is better than Jameis, but he's having a better season than usual.

You can't deny this fact, Jameis has the Bucs at 6-6 and they were the worst team in the league last year.  Good QB play can make a big difference.  Just ask any Dolphins fan.

Brady could have nine super bowls if not for some bad officiating.

But again he hasn't always played well in the playoffs.

The difference is, when he has not played well, his team has been able to support him and get him the win anyway.

Brady could have had zero Super Bowls if not for some bad officiating.

As has been pointed out to you numerous times, there are elements on pretty much EVERY SINGLE PLAY that could be called. On almost every single Patriots drive that ended in a score, there were doubtlessly several calls that could (and maybe should) have been made against the Patriots.

What you are doing is statistical seppuku. You're just wrong on so many levels it's hard to know where to begin.
