Title: Coaching Carousel for 2016
Post by: BuccaneerBrad on January 03, 2016, 10:11:24 pm
49ers have fired Jim TomSula after only one season.  Browns have told Mike Pettine and GM Ray Farmer that they will not be coming back next year.  Tom Coughlin is expected to announce his resignation from the Giants tomorrow.  And I'm hearing rumors out of Indy that Chuck Pagano will be gone within 48 hours.

It's official. Coughlin has stepped down.

So the teams vying for a new HC are:

Miami
San Francisco
NJ Giants
Cleveland
Indianapolis (probably)
Philadelphia
Tennessee

Reportedly Fischer gets a bye in STL because of a possible move to LA, otherwise he'd be gone.

I would think Miami would have an edge over SF, Cleveland, and possibly Tennessee.

Dysfunction from the top is a big consideration with top coaches. The Browns and Niners are disgraces and I guess we come in 3rd. So, doesn't matter what package the Niners or Browns offer for Payton, he has to approve and he will not.

Colts are pretty screwed up too and lack talent minus Luck.

Colts had a change of heart and have Chick Pagano an extension

That probably means the Colts will fire their GM. It's his fault anyway, the team is sorely lacking in talent.

EDIT: Nevermind, he is staying too. I guess that's what happens when your owner snorts Oxy.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say the Colts GM must have some incriminating pictures of Irsay, because that guy is terrible.

The guy has mug shots and a noted drug addiction, how much more incriminating can they be? I can only imagine a donkey is involved.

Bucs have fired Lovie Smith.  I'm surprised by this move, but then again I'm not surprised.  For a guy who preaches fundamentals and discipline, his defenses constantly committed some horrendous penalties that would negate bin plays, and overall played like dog shit

It's very surprising. I'd say it even more surprising than the fact the Colts kept Chuck Pagano and that was a surprise. I have to wonder if Winston and he didn't get along or they have an inside on someone else that they feel is a better option.

Interesting  ... just read the Dolphins might have been the reason Lovie Smith was fired.

Just when it seemed all of the Dolphins coaching candidates had been revealed, another has popped up. And it might have to led to some major upheaval in Tampa Bay.

The Buccaneers surprising fired coach Lovie Smith late Wednesday night after just two seasons in Tampa Bay.

It’s already being speculated that the Bucs made the moves so they could promote offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, who is popular in the Tampa Bay locker room and helped develop rookie quarterback Jameis Winston.

But did the Dolphins help spur the moves?

The Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud reports that “Koetter is in play as a candidate for the Dolphins.”

As the Dolphins interest peaked, the Buccaneers ownership and general manager Jason Licht “felt they had to move quickly,” according to the Times.

And now NFL Network reports that the Dolphins have requested to interview Koetter.

Koetter has also been linked to the Eagles opening, but he hasn’t interviewed for the job.

He was previously offensive coordinator of the Jaguars and Falcons and head coach at Boise State and Arizona.

Dolphins head executive Mike Tannenbaum, who was an agent in between his time with the Jets and Dolphins, was Koetter’s agent.

Tannenbaum also represented Cincinnati offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, who is scheduled to meet with the Dolphins on Sunday.

You’d have to think Koetter is most likely to remain in Tampa Bay as the Buccaneers coach after the Bucs cleared the way for his hire by firing Smith.

Tampa Bay still has to go through an interview process and follow the Rooney Rule.

I think we are both right.  Koetter has an amazing offensive mind.  He's brought a burst of energy to the locker room and has a great relationship with Jameis.  The players think very highly of him.  At this point, it's about making sure Jameis develops into the superstar he is expected to.  Losing Koetter would've impeded that development, and the Bucs simply could not allow that to happen.  Now the only questions are, who runs the defense and how are they going to turn around the sorry group?

That shocks me a bit as well. I wonder how much control they are giving him. That seemed to be a big issue in Philly.

My first thought when I heard about the Kelly hiring was "please don't let him make any personnel decisions!"

I do think that Kelly being hired means that Kaepernick will be back as our starter next season, after it looked all but certain that he would get cut as a cap casualty. I guess we'll see how Chip's read option offense works at the NFL level with a QB that is made for that system.

In short, I am a 49ers fan, and I support the organization's decisions...until they are proven to be bad decisions. I hope Kelly has a great run in SF, and helps us get back to being a playoff contender every year.

What do you think happened to Kaepernick?  He looked so good coming out in 2012, then went downhill

The Bucs have agreed to terms with Dirk Koetter to be the new head coach.  He served as offensive coordinator last season and played a big role in the development and maturation of Jameis Winston.  Glad to see continuity on offense there.  The defense is a big question mark still

Mobile QB's have a hard time becoming great because instead of getting out of jams by learning to read defenses and make better throws, they escape it with their legs. So, they don't need to in the beginning until the rest of the league has enough tape to study you and knows how to take you down.

In all honesty, this was the downfall of Michael Vick. He was never as great as the media and sponsors made him out to be. He had the potential to be one of the best, but he relied on his legs too much. Kaepernick can still change, maybe even RG3.

Just my opinion, but I think it was a combination of 3 things... First, we lost two pro bowl O-linemen, and we arguably had worse O-line play overall this season than Miami. Second, there is the square peg-round hole training he did with Warner this past offseason. Kaep is NOT a pocket QB, and trying to make him one wasn't a bright move. Third, Kaep is not the most mentally/emotionally strong person in the world, and when things started going bad, he started doubting everything about his game, and shit just straight up snowballed from there.

Hopefully Chip will install a nice comfy square hole for Kaep to fit into. Nothing would make me happier than to see Kaep looking like Kaep again, with a few more quality sides of beef in front of him.

Wow ... who could have saw that coming? Lovie's biggest crime this past season was the fact his Offensive Coordinator was more in demand than he. Kind of makes it a damned if you hire a great guy and damned if you don't hire a great guy situation.

Lovie's biggest crime is that he failed to adjust his defensive scheme to fit his players.  He kept stubbornly running that Tampa 2 coverage which is outdated and needs to go.

Add to the fact that the team set a record for penalties.  They missed a lot of kicks, they got blown out on opening day by the worst team in the league, they blew a 24 point lead at Washington, and they lost four in a row to end the season.  Too many mishaps.  Good bye.

Pretty much anyone who lives in Tampa, like Brad and myself.  That's pretty much all the Tampa media was talking about before it happened.

Is this the year of "Promote the OC to head coach?"  Seems to be happening a lot lately.

LOL ... I was just kidding as that was one of the worst kept secrets in the NFL.  The day Lovie got fired it was immediately reported the reason being the Dolphins. They requested an interview with Koettner the Bucs panicked. As it was  ... they were going to give Lovie another year.

Because the more important thing was to make sure Jameis's development goes unhindered.  The two things that ruin a franchise QB are lack of pass protection and constantly having to learn new systems.  Your boy Tannehill hasn't even been in the league five years.  He's now on his third head coach and fourth OC.  And he's been sacked an unholy number of times

Former Miami Dolphins Quarterback Doug Pederson returns to the City of Philadelphia to become the Eagles' HC.  It was Pederson, not Marino or Mitchell, who was the QB for the Dolphins in November 1993, when the Dolphins beat the Eagles in the old Veterans Memorial Stadium for Don Shula's record setting most wins ever by a HC.  Myself and a friend left Tampa on a Saturday afternoon, driving all night to arrive in Philly just before game time, bought tickets from a scalper, and saw the record setting victory.

P.S. took a lot of crap from the fans, as is always the case in Philly.
