Title: Super Bowl Live Blog
Post by: dolphins4life on February 07, 2016, 04:10:24 pm
Now that I have concluded that the AFC championship was in fact legitimate, I am watching the Super Bowl this year.

It's nice to watch the game without having to root against the Patriots.

Looking forward as always to the big game  8)

My pick (heart and head) - Carolina

My prediction will be that Denver's excellent defense keeps it close early, but eventually they get worn down as their offense continues to struggle. If Denver turns over the ball early in the game, then it could get really ugly for them like against Seattle two years ago.

Is this Peyton's last game?

Is this Peyton's last game?

It has been widely rumored all week - 18th year in the NFL for No 18, Super Bowl, seems a nice way to bow out...

I certainly don't hope for it, but it will be interesting to see what happens if he is really off today - could they possibly bench him for Oz in his last ever game? Like I said, I hope it doesn't happen and he has a great game to finish a glorious career.

Denver has come out extremely aggressive and Carolina is on their heels right now

Good opening drive by Denver, Peyton looks sharp.

Anyone notice there were no audibles during that drive?

Either Denver are very happy with the way Carolina are lining up, or they are keeping things simple at the beginning to settle Peyton into the game. Seems to be working for them.

Carolina three and out.

Talib on Olsen is a smart matchup.

2nd horrible call of the game to go against Carolina.

And it leads directly to a touchdown.

That's it, this game is tainted.

Commentators went nuts - nose of the ball was too close to the ground to call an overrule, I don't like the decision but I understand it.

This is like Jerome Bettis in 2005.

What are you smoking man?  He was bubbling the ball the entire time and the nose of it touched the ground at one point.

Great defensive play on the sack, fumble, TD.  If this Broncos D can kick Tom Brady's ass, they can certainly kick Cam Bewton's

Title: Re: Super Bowl Live Blog
Post by: Downunder Dolphan on February 07, 2016, 07:11:07 pm
Wow, Cam was sleeping on that one, zero awareness of that coming.

Crowd noise from the Denver fans at that end of the field is really messing up Carolina's offense right now, already going to silent counts - a bit like what happened to Denver two years ago.

On a more serious note, I've never been a proponent of taunting penalties.  Shit talk is part of the game

Not much right going for Cam - it's hard to get settled when virtually all of your good passes are being dropped, and it's not like any of they have been by "Hands of Stone" Ted Ginn either  ;) :P

2007 Dolphins being a very notable exception... ::)

There was a video on Youtube of his rookie season highlights (not) set to Snoop Dog's "Drop it like it's hot", I guess enough time has passed for it to be a good laugh. A bit like "Chad Henne is a joke", that one was right on the money  :D

2008 the Dolphins won the division

2009 they would have made the playoffs if not for at least two games being stolen from them

What have they done since?

Big 3rd down conversion to Olsen, great screen play.

Both defenses have been playing lights out to now.

Talib has got to be careful - 2nd personal foul already, another might get him jettisoned out of the game.

Make that turnovers - pretty much the difference in the game so far has been Carolina's mistakes.

I should know that by now, it's the same story for every Super Bowl. :-[

End of the half.

What a dominant display by the defenses - the offenses had what, just one decent drive EACH!

Reminds me of the first half of Super Bowl XXIII where both highly touted offenses struggled - all we need now is a Ted Ginn TD kick return, and a Montana-like drive at the finish to win the game.  ;)

Is halftime over?

Just got back from lunch to see the end of the first drive.

A couple of nice catches by Ginn, and smart by Carolina to install max protect to give Cam a little more time.

Missed FG hurts though, another Carolina mistake.

This game is rigged for the Broncos.

That is ten points the refs have cost Carolina now.

Post by: Downunder Dolphan on February 07, 2016, 09:10:15 pm
Carolina D keeps it to a one score game.

Still lots of time remaining, their offense needs to get clicking.

Tolbert should be in the game more, probably would be if he hadn't coughed it up earlier (for the first time in an eternity, it's been one of those days...)

Denver D got greedy and got burned on the long throw. Hopefully that's the dpark Carolina needs...

Keystone cops routine there, dropped catch, interception, fumble... :o

We do have a clear MVP contender now on Denver's defense - 2x fumble recoveries should gain a few votes.

Great game all around by both teams. Proud of what Carolina did coming off a 7 win season. Solid foundation on defense and when Benjamin comes back next year, Cam will have 2 monsters to throw to with him and Funchess.

No complaints about Manning getting a second ring. Good season!

Title: Re: Super Bowl Live Blog

That should seal it, great running by Anderson all game. Bit of a surprise to me, Denver has committed more to the run than Carolina all game - the score difference has a bit to do with it, but until now it should not have really been a factor.

Congratulations Denver, the best defense and the much better team on the night - great play calling by Kubiak & Phillips, and the fans at the stadium can give themselves a massive pat on the back too because they certainly made a difference with their noise.

Title: Re: Super Bowl Live Blog
Post by: dolphins4life on February 07, 2016, 10:18:51 pm
The refs cost Carolina a Super Bowl:

1) 1st quarter, the non-overturned catch cost the Panthers a touchdown,

2) 3rd quarter, the missed off-side call on the field cost the Panthers a field goal

4) 4th quarter, the missed holding call on Ginn cost the Panthers a possible touchdown.

Definitely a loss they can build on, so many mistakes but their defense played lights out and kept them in it for much of the game. Two top quality cornerback to come back from injury will make that defense even tougher to play on too.

Normally when you start thinking about stuff like destiny (1972 Dolphins playing for 17-0 lining up for a FG to make the score 17-0) in the words of Larry Csonka, "destiny has a way of coming back and biting you in the ass". This is a nice way for Peyton to call time on his career, 18 years for No 18, going out a winner on the biggest stage, two Super Bowl rings to match brother Eli - seems fitting for a great of the game.

The question is do you think a couple of calls that didn't go Carolina's way was the difference in the game? Denver's defense OWNED Carolina and Cam Newton. They deserved to win and a couple of calls going Carolina's way wouldn't have made a bit of difference. Denver was far and away a better team tonight. It really wasn't even close.

When was a touchdown catch for CAR called incorrectly?

Because that's the only situation in which an incomplete pass would directly cost the Panthers seven points (technically, six).

Jesus you're ridiculous.  It was a close call. Call on the field was incomplete. Replay was inconclusive.  As he initially hits the ground, the tip of the ball hits the ground.  He rolls over and the ball comes loose, but he gets control.  When the ball hit the ground (or didn't if that's what you believe) it's not 100% clear. That's why they couldn't overturn it.

Talib going offsides was VERY close.  He timed that well.

Ginn's interference was a judgement call.

Any other wild and ignorant accusations you want to throw out there?

That was definitely not a catch....enough to overrule it had it been called a catch, IMO.

But since it was originally called "no catch", there's no way that call should've been overturned.

Really, the old terrible call in the game was the Personal Foul against Talib for essentially just jawing.

Overall I thought the game was called fairly,a close defensive struggle,as most people thought with these defenses.

The game if not a bit boring, especially for the casual fan,was the best part of the night.

The Commercials this year were pretty forgettable, like they decided to pay all the celebrities and forego creativity.

I liked the ewes singing Queen:somebody to love  :D

I have to give it to Lady Gaga...She did great job on the National Anthem.

Seriously, I have to wonder what game you guys watched or what type of mini-TV you guys had because that ball never touched the ground and the TV crew pointed it out clearly and in slow motion (with multiple angles). His hand was under the ball at the point I think you guys are saying it hit the ground. When he rolls over it also never touched the ground and was clearly shown by the TV crew as well.

The NFL blew that call (I'm not putting it on the game refs because it was a tough call live, the guys in the studio messed up).

This is the best angle.  When he initially hits the ground, the tip of the ball appears to hit turf.  Even if it didn't, it is too close to tell, and since the call was incomplete, you cannot overturn it.

His hand is under it, but not in front of it.  The front nose of the ball clearly touches the ground (right before both players' helmets hit the ground), and the ball moves around after it touches the ground.  Incomplete, by definition.

This is the best angle.

There is no one best angle and that is why when you take every angle and shot into account you see the ball never touched the ground. One angle doesn't cut it.

You told everyone here that you weren't going to watch the SB because the Refs cheated your beloved Patriots two weeks ago, we wish you had followed your own proclamation.

I decided to watch it because I studied film of the AFC championship game and decided the calls were fine.  As I explained in my own thread, the pass to Gronkowski in the endzone was an uncatchable pass because he wouldn't have been able to catch it with three defenders on him.

As for the catch, Mike Carey himself said it was a catch on the air.

The offsides, I will have to see a video, but it looked like he was clearly offsides.

The pass to Ginn was pretty flagrant too.  At least as bad as the one they called on Carolina at the goal line later.

That is nothing close to how they define uncatchable.

Mike Carey says a lot of shit that isn't correct.  I've heard his commentary during a lot of games this year, and I've seen him come up incorrect on a lot of calls too.  I wouldn't take what he says as the gospel.

Are you sure?
Yes.  Your picture is while they're still in the air and his hand is moving towards his legs.  When they land, his hand is under the ball, not in front of it.

The larger point is that whatever argument you want to make, it's clearly not going to be "indisputable visual evidence," which is (was?) the standard for overturning the call on the field of "incomplete pass."

As for the catch, Mike Carey himself said it was a catch on the air.
Mike Carey is wrong a lot.

I have to admit ... until seeing Spider's video clip I thought it was a bad call but now I'm sure it was the correct call. At best it is inconclusive.

Your picture is while they're still in the air

We will never agree on anything if that picture of the receiver with his elbow and knee on the ground constitute being in the air in your opinion.

Video provides more information than a still.

So you say he was in the air at that moment also? If not, thanks for adding nothing to the discussion I'm having.

Again we will never agree if you think 10% is a lot.

What the H man, give credit where credit is due! ;)

I meant "in the air" as in "they are still falling."  Surely you are not arguing that his knee being down means anything in the context of this play.

Again we will never agree if you think 10% is a lot.
You think a 10% failure rate on replay reviews is acceptable?  The referees' union would love for you to be in the league office.

For some contrast: Mike Pereira got 49 of 50 calls right (http://www.footballzebras.com/2010/12/31/pereira-best-in-sports-media-for-10-by-si/) (as in, matching the call made on the field) in his first year as an analyst.

It is clear from the video that the ground caused the ball to move.

Maybe you should get up to speed on the rulebook if you want to add anything to the discussion.

I had a good belly laugh. At best, it is inconclusive. You should remember this before you start telling people to consult the rule book, not even the replay officials said it was incomplete. The official announcement was the call stands, not it was confirmed, so it wasn't even clear to the people making the call apparently.

Said the guy who dismisses video evidence and relies on stills...

How does it feel to go thru life relying on incomplete information?

Since you like STILLS, here is a STILL showing the nose of the ball touching the ground.

If you STILL want to argue that the ball didn't touch the ground after this STILL, which shows something different from your STILL, then you can STILL do that.

Says the guy who only takes one angle views and considers it complete. You have no idea what I have considered and your still only shows two fingers of an entire hand. That proves even less than my picture.

I'm not going any further on this. Unless someone can show the other angles this is pointless because one angle doesn't tell the story.
