I am no fan of this at all and wish someone would take action to change this status.

The teams themselves are the ones earning that $9 Billion and they are all taxable. It was only the league office that was classified as a non-profit. In order to avoid this confusion in the future the league office gave up their tax exempt status in 2015. Now they don't have to tell anyone how much league officers make.
