Can this really be true and if so, how is that even possible?

I don't know if it is entirely true but it is a fact that the NFL has been classified as a nonprofit tax exempt organization (though the individual teams do have to pay taxes) for a long time. I am no fan of this at all and wish someone would take action to change this status.

This is a gross misstatement.  The teams themselves are the ones earning that $9 Billion and they are all taxable.  It was only the league office that was classified as a non-profit.  In order to avoid this confusion in the future the league office gave up their tax exempt status in 2015.  Now they don't have to tell anyone how much league officers make.
