Title: Everyone once in a while someone says nice things about Tannehill.
Post by: Pappy13 on November 22, 2016, 09:47:27 am
So I post it to offset some of the negative. I've maintained from the beginning that he doesn't have to be the 2nd coming of Dan Marino to take us where we want to go, you just need to put a winning team around him and Gase is starting to do that. The previous coaches didn't.

He was asked Monday when he got a "conviction" about his quarterback.

"I think it was before I even took the job," he said. "That's why I took the job. That's a starting point. When you feel comfortable with the quarterback you're coming in with, that's always a good starting point.

"And then obviously, there's a huge checklist going down after that; but I felt really good about him coming in and the more we've worked together, the better I've felt."

Gase has said he doesn't understand all the Tannehill criticism. But then again ... he knows what he is looking at.

My view of Tannehill is even more positive, in that his recent success is more attributable to him than to the players around him.

A couple things I've liked about Tannehill:

1) He has a positive attitude, gives 100%.

2) He doesn't throw blame onto others.

3) And maybe most importantly, he is durable.  Most QB's would have had to take multiple games off with the beating Tannehill has taken over the last three years.

Has he missed a start since taking over?

No

Not only that but he hasn't missed many plays over that span. I just looked and Matt Moore is 16 for 30 over 6 games since Ryan came on the team. 19 of those attempts were in a blow out win against the Jets when Tannehill got hurt during his first season. He started the next game.

He's going to get concussed at some point. How many times have we seen his head bounce off the turf? Yeah, that scares me.

From the article (which I just had a chance to read):

Quote
On this five-game win streak, Tannehill has a 96.98 quarterback rating — 12 points above his career average.

And that's great, but there was a twelve-game stretch in 2014 (the Oakland game through the Minnesota game) in which Tannehill's average QB rating was 98.7, and his YPA was 7.4, in contrast to his 7.1 YPA during the five-game win streak this year.

This isn't anything he hasn't done before.

In fact in the Minnesota game that year he engineered a fourth-quarter comeback much like the one we saw the other day at Los Angeles, with two TDs on the team's final two drives before kneeling to end the game.

I think perhaps people are expecting some sort of Adam Gase, "QB whisperer" effect here, and so the inclination is to view things Tannehill has done before as some sort of indication of an increased ability to perform on his part.  That's human nature.
