Title: Comedy show recommendations
Post by: dolphins4life on August 25, 2018, 02:54:53 am
With the announced cancellation of The Big Bang Theory, I need to find a new good comedy show to watch.

My other two favorites, Baby Daddy and Two Broke Girls, were also canceled.

Any good suggestions?

If you are a Big Bang fan, try the spin off Young Sheldon

I started watching that lately. It actually surprised me that I liked it.

IMO - Comedy shows tend to be pretty subjective, some people love a show, and I go this sucks...

My favorite comedy I've seen recently (probably hands down best I've seen this year)...Santa Clarita diet on Netflix.

Thank you to Stroke, and the recommendations of others here...

Yeah.  Most definitely.

Arrested Development is the best comedy ever put to film.  But if you like Big Bang Theory, I don't know what to tell you.  I find what little I've seen of that to be completely insufferable.

I second Santa Clarita Diet, and second the thanks to Stroke for recommending it.

Last Man Standing is coming back soon.  I don't know if qualifies as Comedy exactly but Top Gear is always fun

I saw a season of that show some time back and I thought it was funny and they had a lot of talent.  Then I ran across a comedy special the other night on Netflix and I thought it was hilarious.  The woman had been a Last Comic Standing winner, but I'd never heard of her -- Iliza Shlesinger.

You're thinking of Last Comic Standing.  Last Man Standing is Tim Allen's show.

My wife has Iliza Shlesinger's personality for the most part.  She was in a sorority and makes fun of the whole white girl culture, but is still a part of it.  The part where she talks about pinning everything on pintrest, starts planning out her wedding with her boyfriend, and screams "MY DAY"...my wife would say it just like that when we were getting married (well before we even heard of Iliza).  She would get all worked up and in a psycho voice scream "MY DAY" to break tension lol.

Iliza Shlesinger is extremely funny...hot too.

Yes.   ...yes I am.

Please disregard my ramblings.

I rarely watch sitcoms on tv anymore.  Most of them bore me.  In the early years of the Big Bang Theory, I thought the writing was actually pretty good and the concept was fairly fresh.  The last few years, not so much.  As many shows do, they seem to have kind of run out of what made the show clever and now they go for gimmicks like all but one of the guys getting married, etc.  We don't even watch a lot of tv, but when we do, I prefer the gear head programming of the Velocity Channel, some of what is on the History Channel, and the wife and I enjoy some of the stuff on HGTV.  When i got home from the gym last night, she was watching The Bachelor so I chastised her appropriately for killing off her own brain cells.   ;D

Dolphster hit the nail on the head. Too many sitcoms go on for too long. Writers leave for other shows diminishing the talent or the show ideas become forced or cliche. I know I have been guilty of continuing to watch Big Bang while recognizing that. I'm just in it waiting for the end.

Network TV is designed to continue as long as it's people watch and it's profitable.  Almost unanimously, network TV shows have to drop in quality and lose viewers for them to end.

Other types of TV aren't immune to this, but it's way less prevalent.  There is more creative freedom, usually, so show-runners and creators tend to have more artistic integrity, which means shows ending when the story is done and episodes that have less filler.

I am 100% off of network drama and comedy shows.

Breaking Bad = perfectly timed with the ending so it didn't go on too long
Big Bang = has been terrible for years because it went on too long
Walking Dead = has been terrible for years because it went on too long

...and so forth

I,like so many other really liked the first few seasons big bang theory,(Thundergod was the 1st to mention it,and it's probably true) when the guys got girlfriends the show went down hill...

I really like Wheeler dealers on Velocity,I do miss Edd China, but agree with his reasonings too...I also love the Barrett Jackson Auctions they show on Discovery/Velocity

Not so much a comedy thing, but I'm with ya on this one. If there is a Barrett Jackson auto auction on TV, I'll pop in to check out the sweet machines...

Forged in Fire is my jam right now.  It's not a comedy, but I can't help but laugh at the awkward people on that show lol.

By network tv, do you mean ABC, NBC, and CBS? If so, I haven't watched network tv since I was in high school. Miami Vice, Cheers, Alf, Cosby Show and all kinds of shit like that. For some reason it isn't the same anymore. The shows now just bore me. I'd rather watch AMC replays of Rambo, Tombstone, and Shawshank Redemption over and over on a loop than watch some shitty network garbage. Sometimes TCM has some good old movies. Hell, the closest thing to a sitcom that I watch is Impractical Jokers on TruTv, but for some reason they play that like 20 hours a day, everyday of the wekk. So I've pretty much seen them all multiple times. These days TV is mostly background noise.

:-[ I mentioned Barrett Jackson, and Wheeler dealers because of what Dolphster mentioned...

I have to say I don't really watch a lot of comedies, because most of them seem to follow the same boring formats with a different comedian leading.

The Ranch even being really right leaning on netflix has some chuckles, has well known actor cast. (IMO it's not exactly ground breaking comedy)

Yes.  Basically anything that's free over the air relies totally on ad revenue (or maybe merchandising, I guess).  So, their model is to just string you along so that you can see the next commercial.
