Title: Good guy with a gun stops bad guy with a gun
Post by: Spider-Dan on July 04, 2021, 01:41:51 am
It's rare, but it does happen (https://www.cnn.com/2021/06/26/us/arvada-colorado-police-shot-good-samaritan/index.html)!

Police say Johnny Hurley, 40, confronted the gunman, identified as Ronald Troyke, after Troyke had shot and killed Arvada police officer Gordon Beesley near Arvada's Olde Town Square on Monday afternoon.

As Troyke ran toward the square with a long gun, Hurley shot the suspect with a handgun, according to Arvada police.

This is definitely an example of a well-prepared citizen preventing further loss of life by stopping an armed criminal in his tracks!  Unfortunately, this hero's life was itself tragically cut short: Hurley himself was killed by other police responding on the scene, who believed Hurley to be the armed criminal.

Once you've killed the bad guy, you need to drop your weapon and put your hands on your head while you wait for the police to arrive

But how do you know this armed criminal doesn't have an accomplice lurking around the corner to shoot you?  You can't just give up your right to bear arms before the police arrive.

Even more, what if you're a patriotic American who is just enjoying their Constitutional rights by doing some open carrying, and you're not even involved with the conflict?  It's not like the police saw Hurley kill the shooter.  They responded to a call of a shooter at-large, saw a guy with a gun, and immediately shot him.

Police have absolutely no responsibility for situational awareness.  Doesn't matter if the weapon was pointed in their direction or not.  Go on a call and shoot anyone with complete immunity regardless of if they are a threat or not.

I sure wish I had known this much sooner.  Do you know how stressful it has been to be worried sick every day for the past 19 years that I might accidentally end up in an unjust shooting situation?  If I had known that I could "go on a call and shoot anyone with complete immunity regardless of if they are a threat or not" I could have saved myself a lot worry and stress.
