Title: Chris Simms: If MIA plays SF again, Tua's gonna throw for 500 yards

A lot of the analysis this week has been how SF's stifling defense shut down the Dolphins offense.  That was not what I saw when I watched the game; I saw Dolphin receivers running free in the secondary and Tua missing throws.  And Chris Simms - usually one of the biggest Tua haters - seems to agree.  Direct quote:

"I have never, never seen the 49ers defense exposed the way they were in this football game. Not in the Kyle Shanahan era. Never."

Much of the video linked above is showing how close the 49ers came to having their doors blown off.  Yeah, we can talk about how the scary SF defense "rattled" Tua, but if your defense is based on fear preventing a QB in a clean pocket from hitting wide open receivers, I question whether that is sustainable.

Deebo Samuel had quite a bit (https://www.nbcsports.com/bayarea/49ers/49ers-defense-had-tua-tagovailoa-throwing-gimmes-deebo-samuel-says) to say about Tua after the game, and that's one of the benefits of winning on Sunday.  The 49ers won't be playing the Dolphins in the regular season until 2024, so the only time those comments could come back to bite him (in the short term) is if both teams make the Super Bowl.  Although Tua had a bad game, I am not at all scared of that team in a future matchup.  If Tua plays like he did against the Bills or Ravens - two better teams than the 49ers - the Dolphins blow that team out.

This game was a developmental "hump" for Tua -- an important game against a good defense, on the road, with the added pressure of its being against his beloved head coach's former team.

I suspect any "fear" was generated far more by all that than by anything the 49ers did defensively, specifically.

At any rate, the information above is important because it underscores how final scores aren't always fully informative about the differences between two teams.  The degree to which a single game determines the difference between two teams is a function of whether what happened in it is replicable or sustainable.

Yes, Tua missed throws, but I think it stemmed from the line being spotty and he didn't have consistency.

If he trusts himself to step up and make the throws, we could've won that game by 2 TDs.

That's an easy branch to climb out on without worrying about falling, as that quote would require that BOTH teams make it to the Super Bowl. He may as well have said "If MIA plays SF again, Tua will have learned how to sprout wings and fly.

Which of those two teams' Super Bowl odds do you equate to Tua "sprouting wings"?

The quote requires that "both" make it...so "both" would be your answer.

However, if that happens, it is still much more probable that Nick Bosa has 5 sacks in that game before Tua throws for anywhere near 500 yards.

Also, if both make it to the SB, Tua will likely become the first QB to ever lose to Mr. Irrelevant twice.

Now, fuck off and have a pleasant day.  ;D

I think the quote can be taken hypothetically as well, in which case it isn't dependent on a low probability event.  Simms is essentially saying that in theory another game between the two teams very likely wouldn't reflect the same defensive dominance by SF.

Two teams can play 100 times in theory and if the actual game between them is likely to be replicated only 10 of those 100 times, then you're safe in saying another game between them, hypothetically, would likely go differently.

If you watched the interview Simms thought that Miami left a LOT of meat on the bone because Tua was not his typical accurate self. He felt that if they played again that Tua probably would have hit on a number of throws that he missed on in that game. Obviously he was exaggerating about throwing for 500 yards, but his point was that if Miami and the 49'ers met again, that the Dolphins offense didn't really need to change the game plan, all they had to do was execute it better and that the 49'ers defense probably needed to make some adjustments.

The Bucs are a lock to make the Super Bowl, so there is no chance of SF reaching it.

The Bucs are a lock to watch the playoffs from their living room sofas. Any thoughts you have to the contrary are pure delusion...

If Mark Ingram didn't wimp out on the sidelines last week, you may be right, because the entire NFC South would be 5-8.

But he did, so the Bucs still lead their division and are almost certain to make the playoffs.  When they do, then their opponents will literally roll over and hand games to them.

As for Miami making it, Miami will be LUCKY, and I mean VERY LUCKY to make the playoffs this year.

Are you saying that they won't make the playoffs at all?

Or are you saying they will be eliminated in the first or second round?
