Title: Dolphins Part Ways with O-Line Coach Applebaum Post by: EDGECRUSHER on February 02, 2023, 03:39:59 pm I remember us being excited about his hire because he had a great resume. We improved under him but not by enough. Then again, when you have a substitute RT the whole year and have to play Liam Eichenberg, how much of the failure is your fault?
I don't know why we waited this long to do this though, pretty late in the game for new coaches. Not impossible of course but we may not have our top choices now. Title: Re: Dolphins Part Ways with O-Line Coach Applebaum Post by: CF DolFan on February 02, 2023, 04:19:32 pm It's either the person drafting or the coaches not doing their job and only one can fire the other. We've already over spent on a LT that misses 5 games on average because of crappy drafting. I get the Dolphins really like the guy but sooner or later Grier has to be held accountable doesn't he?

I think a lot of his drafting for the O-Line was justifiable, some just took weird turns. -Hunt has been awesome -Drafting Jackson at 18 made sense because he was the last "premiere" LT left on the board. Who knew he would be a useless baby? -Solomon Kindley in the 4th round seemed like a great find, then he never saw the field again and was released -Dieter is a solid backup and plug in guy, I think he even did well as a Center one year -Liam Eichenberg made sense at the time, I think the issue is we moved him around too much. He was an LT that we moved to RT and then LG, that screws up anyone's development Drafting Noah in the 1st round may be the worst draft mistake in the team's history though. Title: Re: Dolphins Part Ways with O-Line Coach Applebaum Post by: CF DolFan on February 02, 2023, 04:34:17 pm You can make excuses but the guy has had tons of picks and managed to draft one guard (Hunt) who played tackle in college but has failed to produce a tackle. He wasted a lot of top picks
Title: Re: Dolphins Part Ways with O-Line Coach Applebaum Post by: EDGECRUSHER on February 02, 2023, 04:55:37 pm He did waste a lot of picks, but sometimes we were victims of our own mediocrity. I said for years to be 14-2 or 2-14, all the stuff in the middle is a first rounder in the teens and your top players at tackle or elsewhere were already gone. We only got Tunsil because some teams were stupid about a dumb photo, otherwise we would've been left with no LT and no franchise changing trade.

Title: Re: Dolphins Part Ways with O-Line Coach Applebaum Post by: Dave Gray on February 03, 2023, 08:57:56 am I can't remember where I was reading about this, but it was something about Applebaum not being bad, specifically, but he was requiring a lot of assistance from (I think it was) the O-coordinator. And McDaniel wanted to replace with someone who could do it all, to free up O-coordinating duties.

If they have someone in mind that is an improvement then great. The O-line improved a bit this year but it was because of new talent brought in, not improved coaching. You really need a great coach if you want to develop a dominant line. Title: Re: Dolphins Part Ways with O-Line Coach Applebaum Post by: CF DolFan on February 03, 2023, 02:40:44 pm Offensive line coach Mike Munchak is well repsected and was let go when Fangio was fired from Denver. Could they be making a reunion in Miami?

Nah that award goes to Dion Jordan and it's not close.-Hunt has been awesome -Drafting Jackson at 18 made sense because he was the last "premiere" LT left on the board. Title: Re: Dolphins Part Ways with O-Line Coach Applebaum Post by: CF DolFan on February 10, 2023, 12:15:13 pm If Dion is not #1, then it's #2.....or Ted Ginn. Ginn went on to have a pretty decent career. He just wasn't what we were wanting. He and Dion are worlds a part. Just looked and he also holds 2 Dolphins records. Dolphins franchise records Most kickoff return touchdowns in a single game: 2 (2009) Most kickoff returns in a single season: 63 (2007) LOL ... his one game alone with the 2 TDs far outweighed Dion. Title: Re: Dolphins Part Ways with O-Line Coach Applebaum Post by: EDGECRUSHER on February 10, 2023, 12:36:38 pm Ted Ginn as a 3rd rounder would be a hidden gem. Ted Ginn at #9 overall was horrible.
Dion Jordan looks to be out of the league now. The kid had talent but it was a terrible pick that high, I don't believe it was even a position of need at the time and he made things worse with his attitude and drug use. Guess the only saving grace was that we fleeced the Raiders for the pick. We went from 12th to 3rd and all we had to do was give up a 2nd rounder. You will never see that again, today that move costs us a 1st, 2nd and 3rd at the minimum. Probably multiple 1sts. Title: Re: Dolphins Part Ways with O-Line Coach Applebaum Post by: Pappy13 on February 10, 2023, 12:55:05 pm That's what makes the Jordan pick so bad. We moved up to 3rd to get him. OMG
I don't think you're giving Ginn enough credit either. He was a decent WR too. He would have done better things on a different team. Title: Re: Dolphins Part Ways with O-Line Coach Applebaum Post by: EDGECRUSHER on February 10, 2023, 01:28:50 pm You want to really get sick? The Eagles picked behind us and selected Lane Johnson who just set a record this year for not allowing a sack in 26 consecutive games. First ballot Hall of Fame tackle.
We then drafted Jamar Taylor with our other 2nd round pick, Dallas Thomas in the 3rd, Jelani Jenkins and Dion Sims in the 4th, Mike Gillissee in the 5th and Don Jones in the 7th. I'm sure there were worse drafts in the team's history but I would be shocked if that was not Top 10. Title: Re: Dolphins Part Ways with O-Line Coach Applebaum Post by: EDGECRUSHER on February 17, 2023, 12:03:09 pm They should open the door with his head on his way out. They will not be doing this as he is being retained for the upcoming season. I guess they blamed it all on injuries for the underperformance. |
