Title: BREAKING NEWS: Dolphins land All-Pro Jalen Ramsey
Post by: pondwater on March 12, 2023, 02:47:46 pm
Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey has been traded to the Dolphins for a 2023 third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long, per ESPN.. (https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/35843837/rams-trading-star-cb-jalen-ramsey-dolphins)

Thoughts?

Is he going to replace X or play opposite him?
I would assume opposite, from what i gather he's replacing Jones. But maybe they will replace X also, so maybe not. But being a Dolphins fan for 40+ years it wouldn't surprise me...

Actually I'm more surprised they gave up Hunter Long to get him. Obviously they must not have been that high on him.

How much is he going to cost? I see the Rams.areeating 19 million.

Where did you see that?

I saw that Ramsey agreed to the trade because we guaranteed his salary the next 2 seasons. Guess he had a no trade or limited no trade, that's why the Rams got so little. Is Hunter Long even a bonus or they took him over a 7th round pick?

EDIT: I found what you meant. The Rams are going to eat almost $20 Million in dead cap money this year by trading him before June.

I'm pretty sure this ends the conversation about Poyer coming to Miami, but I'd rather have X/Ramsey/Holland/Brandon Jones with Kohou in the nickel than X/Kohou/Holland/Poyer with Needham in the nickel.

Kohou was an unsung hero for us last season, he played amazing for an UDFA. We will need to find more of these guys in the draft to replenish the ranks because we are a team of superstars now.

I love to see teams in Go Big or Go Home-mode.

Jalen Ramsey is a great get for Miami...still has several years of pro bowl-caliber play let in him.

Hope he brings a little of that swagger with him as well...

Hunter Long has 1 catch in 2 seasons. Pretty sure they weren't very high on him to begin with.

Poyer is a safety so still in play.

Players are wanting to come to Miami these days. Ramsey gave them a discount to be here. Said he's been praying about being here for the last month and a half. this seems to be the place to be right now for a lot of players.

-Team is a contender in Win Now mode
-Beloved Head Coach
-Beautiful Weather and Women
-No state income tax

No better landing spot in the NFL right now than this one.

Seems like a good signing to me.

We should have Trill Williams back also. What little we saw of him, he seemed to be progressing well.

I understand but I'm assuming that Gesicki is gone and I assumed that Hunter Long would get more work next year, but maybe I'm wrong and the offense doesn't really feature a pass catching TE at all so maybe they are happy with running back Smythe and Shaheen. I just figured a TE that could do more than block was maybe important? I guess I should have known better based on how they used Gesicki.

+1

They just aren't going to throw the ball to tight ends, makes it easier on opposing teams. SMH

I'm just not sure that MIA has more money to spend on DBs with holes still left to fill.  Keeping Brandon Jones seems like the more cost-effective option.

We certainly can't go into the season with Austin Jackson at RT, so that should be the next top priority.

Seems like a good signing to me.

On the surface yes - getting a top cover corner to go with X now that Byron has gone seems a good move, although with Fangio now in the assistant seat and more zone coverage on the cards, is this a bit of a luxury when we have other needs? I get the feeling there are going to be more pivotal moves this side of the ball to come yet - we seem to be instantly chewing up salary space the moment we make some, and there are a lot more holes yet to fill.

Ps. Speaking of cap space, the Rams must be really up shit creek without a paddle to make a move like this. We seem to have made out like bandits in this trade.

When Gesicki was "a pass catching tight end" (i.e. prior to McDaniel), he lined up in the slot on the vast majority of plays. I don't have splits for catches/targets based on where he lined up, but based on what I recall seeing, I'm going out on a limb and saying that Gesicki pretty much didn't catch balls lined up as a tight end. He was a big slot receiver masquerading as a tight end. And that's neither the type of tight end nor the type of slot receiver McDaniel wants to use in his offense.

Fangio is making a bunch of money to be the head coach of the defense and makes every call affecting the defense. Grier would not have signed him if Fangio did not want him for his system. I have ro believe he is much more than a luxury.

You are correct. There was even argument as whether to call him a TE or WR since WRs typically make more money.

Which again makes me wonder, what exactly is coming next? We need to sign more players, but all of a sudden we're back to very limited to non-existent cap space to do it.

On one hand X was saying how excited how excited he was about Fangio's signing and looking forward to working in his system - but would anyone be really shocked if he was suddenly traded out now that we have Ramsey?

One thing that I think is much more likely now (and something a few of you had already flagged) - Noah's option is very unlikely to be picked up, and it's more likely he'll get cut ASAP to make cap space.

Noah was shockingly the cornerback with the best passer-rating-against on our team last year. Admittedly in very short sample size and it's not like he was asked to do much. But it might be worth it to see what he could do under Fangio.

I don't think Noah will be cut, mainly because the cap savings would be incredibly meager. He has a salary of $2.1 million of which $1.6 million is guaranteed, so you save $500k by cutting him.

I definitely agree with you that there's no chance his option year is going to be picked up.

Which is why I was a little surprised they included Hunter Long in the trade. Seemed like he had some potential in this offense, unless the Rams wanted him or something? Who knows. By the way, I've seen Tanner Conner's name mentioned as a TE, he's even more WR than TE than Gesicki is.

Is Ramsey a mugger like X?

Will the refs let them both get away with it this year?

I hate to break this to you, but a lot of notable players at the CB position are (per your definition) "muggers", or more accurately, grabbers - especially with the way the rules are being refereed, but also as they get older and start to lose that first step.

Gilmore, X, Ramsey, Bradberry, Marcus Peters, Marlon Humphrey, Eli Apple... to name a few.

^ I saw a twitter poll towards the end of the season that had Sauce Gardner leading in "uncalled holdings".

The best cornerbacks almost universally carefully tread the line of exactly how much contact they can have without the refs calling holding/PI.

But d4l is doing what he always does and when he has convinced himself of something, he will take any fact and change it to fit that narrative.
