Title: AFL - Australian Rules Football Grand Final 2023
Post by: Downunder Dolphan on September 29, 2023, 07:56:05 pm
It's on again in about 4 and a half hours time - the closest thing Australia has to the Superbowl...

After 23 weeks of regular season games followed by playoffs, we are down to the top two teams of the year in the Grand Final: Brisbane Lions vs Collingwood Magpies.

If your coverage has the pre-game entertainment, this year it will be KISS doing a 20 minute set!

Congratulations to the Magpies, capping off the year with a well deserved Premiership win.

Also to Bobby Hill for winning the Norm Smith medal with plays like this mark.

I wasn't... Collingwood are the the equivalent of the Dallas Cowboys as America's team. You either support them, or you support any other team to beat them...

That said, I do respect (almost) all of the players and the coach for being a class act, and they were clearly best team this year. The way they seem to do the exact right things to win in tight situations consistently reflects a well coached team... and it showed both last year and this year. They also play a very good style of attacking football which emphasizes skill, and I always salute a team that does that versus a dour, dull, defensive style of dragging another team down to a level worse than yours.

Their Coaches and (most) of the players are also extremely likeable and down to earth, which is something you could say for about 99% of any team playing AFL now - I think it is something the AFL has managed to do very well; there are very little FIGJAMs in the league compared a decade or two ago.

And, as a PSA to those who never learned to speak fluent Australian, a FIGJAM  (as you can probably contextually figure out) is an arrogant primadona prick.  For contrast, the NFL has often done the opposite and promoted many of its figjams.

~~~
Not a huge AFL fan, but I was pulling for Brisbane...
For those who can't be bothered looking it up on Urban dictionary, FIGJAM is:
FUCK I'M GREAT, JUST ASK ME
Ironically, the players labelled with that, typically hate it.
I think I could get behind this sport.
I wish it was easier to follow CFL as I think that’s cool.
