Title: Cricket WC
Post by: MyGodWearsAHoodie on June 18, 2024, 11:00:21 am
Somehow the US has advanced to the second round.

I didn't even know we had a cricket team or how the game is played.

Let's go USA.

This is the Twenty 20 (T-20) version of the game, where it's just 20 overs for each team.

It's probably the most action-packed version of Cricket (compared to up to 5 day Test matches, or the 50 over one day format), which would appeal more to the US market. The World Cup tournament for this is very recent (compared to the 50 over one day format which began back in 1975).

There's also big money in it too - the Indian Premier League (IPL) pays serious coin. That would explain more expanded world wide interest in the short game.

Didn't realize there was more than one version of cricket.  So is this the of equivalent of 7 vs 7 soccer?

Pretty much.

Australia is knocked out now, but it's good to see Afghanistan in the final four. Rashid Khan has played here locally for years and become a bit of a cult hero in the BBL - he's the sort of star who deserves ultimate success, but with that country it's always going to be an uphill struggle to get it on an international stage. But that's the beauty of a tournament like this, relative powerhouses like Australia and Pakistan can be eliminated and give these guys a chance.
