Title: New Year's Fireworks at 9pm... WHY?
Post by: Downunder Dolphan on December 31, 2024, 05:59:43 am
I'm not sure if that happens over there like here, but for the kids there is an earlier fireworks show at 9pm.

Again, this may be me being a grumpy old bastard, but... why?

New Year changes at midnight. It's a fact. People celebrate the moment the year changes over, not the moment you go to sleep before it changes.

If you want to celebrate, have a sleep during the day. Or drink a case of Harden-The-Fuck-Up. Don't expect it to come to you.

One celebration is enough. Plan around it if you really want to do it. We used to.

Did they move the traditional midnight firework show 3 hours early or did they add an extra show?  If the former I agree it is dumb.  But if they added a second show that allows parents to tell their children to bed at a reasonable hour that is great I also don't have a problem with parents giving their kids Martinelli's Sparkling Cider instead of the real stuff.

They added an extra show.. but sometimes the earlier show (9pm) is the bigger one.

I still think it's unnecessary. It's a modern problem.

If you really want to do it, you plan around it.

If you're presenting these things, you can't always please all the people all of the time. It's unrealistic, and it gives people unrealistic expectations.

A friend of mine attended his grandmothers 90th birthday party last year.  Only her birthday wasn't for another 4 months.  His grandmother had spent 2 years planning how she wanted to spend her 90th birthday so when she went into hospice her family decided to move up the party and his grandmother did in fact die 2 months shy of 90.  I guess you have a problem with them calibrating this false birthday too.

Opposing something that doesn't make your life worse, but make someone else's life better doesn't make you grumpy, it makes you a sadist.

Can't speak to Australia, but here on the west coast of the US, New Year's celebrations at 9pm are ultra-common.  The east coast is 3 hours ahead and the "big New Year's event" in the US is the dropping of the ball at Times Square in NYC, which happens at midnight Eastern Time or... 9pm Pacific Time.

So on the west coast, lots of families with kids will watch the live broadcast of the NYC New Year's Eve at 9pm and then call it a night.

And in Sydney the 9pm show corresponds with begining of the new year at the international date line...the real begining of the year.

I've heard of people on the East Coast playing videos of last year's ball drop for their kids at 9:00pm but I've never seen an actual earlier fireworks celebration.

I heard fireworks going off at both 7:30 and 12.  I am pretty sure it was the professionals lasted too long to just be some kids

I think that fireworks are for stupid people.

I am quite sure that people were shooting off guns in my neighborhood, as well.

I saw the little girl who got shot by stray bullets down there. That's so sad. I can't even imagine why anyone would think its a good idea to shoot up in the sky.
