Title: College Football Playoff
Post by: Sibster on January 10, 2025, 01:56:21 pm
That Orange Bowl was EPIC.  Momentum swings, lead changes, and ties galore.   Two heavyweight brawlers trading punches back and forth.   It came down to whoever fucked up at the end was going to lose and boy Penn State fucked it up.   That late pick was brutal.   You can't be forcing the ball into heavy coverage with the game on the line.   Especially in a game like this where the stakes are unbelievably high.

That being said, Ohio State will wipe the field with Texas tonight in the Cotton Bowl.   They have been playing on a different astral plain since the Michigan loss and at this moment, they are unstoppable.

Both the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl semis were really tight, tough exciting football games.

The standard was very high, and I think that's a good indicator that the new playoff system is getting things right.

It sure is.   Texas played with a lot of toughness on defense that I wasn't expecting, and Will Howard got hurt early on but finished the game.   Both games were down to the wire and that is what fans want to see.

Turns out the championship game was somewhat of a dud.   Ohio State did what they've been doing all playoffs and jumped out to an early lead.  The way Notre Dame plays, they aren't the type to come back from an early lead.   They did make a valiant effort, but too little too late.

I didn't watch any of the game, but the scorecard suggests the score was 7-0 Notre Dame at the end of the first quarter.  That doesn't really sound like an early Ohio State lead to me.  I don't know how long it took Ohio State to tie it up in the 2nd, but 25% of the way through the game, Notre Dame led and Ohio State was scoreless.  That's something.

Because Notre Dame opened the game with an 18 play drive with nine of those plays being QB runs.   Riley Leonard took a nasty beating on that drive and was pretty much helpless  until late in the game.   Each time Ohio State touched the ball in the first half, they proceeded to slice and dice Notre Dame's defense and put six on the board.   Had they not let up midway through the third quarter, this would've been a worse beating.

Terrible scheduling for the Championship Game, which resulted in terrible viewership ratings.

1) They held it on a Monday night, the day of the Presidential Inauguration.
2) Then it was only shown on ESPN. I, like a lot of other cord cutters, don't get ESPN.

Seems like if they held it on Saturday evening, and also televised it on ABC they would have gotten a lot more viewers.

I can agree with having it on ABC but Saturday puts it against the NFL. I would still take my chances against the inauguration.

I enjoyed every single second of the CFP and hope they don't change a thing next year. I honestly don't give two shits about the TV ratings...

College football has a huge following but not even close to the NFL.   You don't want to tangle with the NFL and that's what college football would be doing if the game was held on a Saturday night.
