Well it doesn’t seem like anyone is happy with this on the internet and I don’t know what to think. Probably wouldn’t have been my first choice for backup. Let’s just hope Tua learns when to slide

I love it. This is a really good signing. Wilson is a capable backup to Tua for a reasonable price for a backup.

Geno Smith and Sam Darnold both looked a lot better after leaving the Jets.

I don't know why Grier seems to be obsessed with Jets QBs that are proven busts - he should have seen how much they sucked when we played them. White was a ridiculous signing, and here we are again, handing out (at least) a guaranteed $6M/year for this absolute turkey.

I'm very happy with this signing.  He just suffered from playing for the dumpster fire that is the NY Jets.  I thought he was a great draft pick by the Jets coming out of college.  He has lots of starting experience, is use to playing cold weather games, and knows what it's like if your Oline lets you down.  He's still young and knows he's got a shot when Tua goes down so he's going to be working hard to know the offense.  I thought they'd bring in some crappy old second stringer, but this is what I was hoping for.

I'm curious, in your opinion who would be a serviceable backup?  And at what price?

I thought Darnold got a bum rap playing for the Jets because they stunk; but I'm surprised Geno is even still in the league - he just never looked like an NFL QB.

I'll jump in here. Jimmy G would have been the guy to click with McDaniel with minimal effort, but he's re-signed with the Rams (I'm confidently guessing for a price we couldn't afford).

Mariota was the other one some people were hoping for, but given we jumped straight to Wilson, I'm guessing we were never a chance to afford him either.

Wilson is going to be a White 2.0. A much more expensive White 2.0, and probably not as good (given that at one stage, White beat out Wilson to get the starting job at NY). He was a third string QB at the Broncos last season (with no real chance as the first backup). The previous 2023 season at the Jets was absolutely abominable. This is worth $6M guaranteed?

 If Tua's healthy, it's a waste of cap space. If he goes down, it's still a waste of cap space.

People go on about how complex McDaniel's system is: if Wilson couldn't do anything with the Jets, he has little hope getting his head around this. If this is genuinely the case (the complexity of McDaniel's system) we would be better off drafting 1-2 guys and training them up to be comfortable from day 1, and get our "elite" receivers working with and believing in these guys if they have to come in.

But now there's no point, because Tua is locked in as #1, and if he goes down, Wilson (for better or worse) is chiseled in stone as #2 (because he's costing us at least $6M guaranteed a season). Draft prospects have gotta hope we're not going to pick them, because they'll be 3rd string at most, and will only see reps during preseason, and the remainder of their short NFL career on the practice squad. End of career.  

We know how this will all turn out because we've seen it all before. It's Tua or bust. Full stop. There is no plan B; the backups aren't good enough, and that's partly because the receivers just don't buy into anyone else, and bail out to save their own hides and their paychecks. When you look at it that way... how tight we are with money, and how many other needs we have, this is a truly shithouse decision of epic proportion. After all of Grier's previous work, that's quite something.

McDaniel knows first hand Jimmy G is a pain in the arse. He wouldn't even return coaches calls when away from complex. I don't see Mike ever wanting him.

I actually like this signing. He has all the tools to succeed. I think he was immature and in a bad situation in New York. Hopefully Mike can instill the same confidence in him as he did Tua. If he can win 50% of the games he plays then he will be worth it.

Wilson started 22 games for the Jets in '21 and '22 while White started 7. White only started after Wilson had a bad stretch of games and was benched or when Wilson was injured. Not only that but Wilson was on the team in '23 and started another 11 games while White was shipped to Miami. Wilson was the better QB even when Wilson was a rookie with a couple years less experience than White. Wilson has the physical tools and talent to be a starter, just not for the Jets. White was never anything more than a backup in the pros and that was while he was with the Jets, he was terrible with the Dolphins and was outplayed by both Huntley and Thompson, both backups themselves.

Now that's not to say that Wilson is going to be great as the backup to Tua, but at least he has the tools to work with. That's more than I can say for any other backup that Tua has had other than Fitzpatrick. We'll see what McDaniels can do with him.

The one thing I like about a guy like Wilson (and a bunch of these other Jets castoffs) is that the spotlight isn't going to be too big for them.  Once you've started in NYC and seen that media circus, you can spot-start in Miami without getting a deer-in-headlights look that we saw out of guys like John Beck.

Jimmy G isn't going to play through a hangnail on his finger, and that's not good if you're the #2 guy.  Too many times I've seen the backup come in and go out with a minor injury leaving the team with its 3rd stringer..

Mariotta would have been okay, but not a long term solution.  With Wilson there's a potential to be a long term solution when Tua receives his career ending concussion.
