Title: World Autism Awareness Day
Post by: dolphins4life on April 02, 2025, 03:58:09 pm
Today is World Autism Awareness Day.

Pappy actually picked up on the fact that I am on the spectrum.  I was diagnosed freshman year of college after having an emotional meltdown in my dorm room.

I can attest to the daily struggles of people on the spectrum. Trying to fit in socially, trying to get people to see past your quirks, trying to succeed at jobs, trying to overcome people who judge you.

I have been lucky to have support teams and systems in place that have allowed me to find success and overcome these challenges.

I have learned personal coping mechanisms to help me, as well.

Oddly, they are releasing a sequel to The Accountant.

This movie starred Ben Affleck in the role of person on the spectrum.

Does your autism pair with any other disorders? ...like ADHD?  Is it something that you can medicate for?

I thought it was an underrated movie, and a great performance by Ben Affleck. As someone with family and friends who have diagnosed Asperger's, I thought it was a good portrayal by him framed in what was otherwise basically a Jason Bourne-style action movie.

No, autism cannot be medicated.   Only therapy and specialized education and job training will help.   One of my employees is on the spectrum at a mild to moderate level.   I make sure his job tasks are routine from day to day.   As long as I keep it that way, he does a good job for me.

First of all, thank you for sharing this with us. It's an incredibly brave thing for you to do, and I salute you and have a little more understanding of your posts here.

That doesn't give you a green light to post any old shit you think you can get away with just to get a rise out of all of us, but at least you should get a more considered response in future. ;)

Good to hear you are coping with this, it can be a struggle. I can only assume that since it took until you were in college to diagnose you that it's fairly mild with you, but I did pick up on it the way you hyper focus on certain things. My grand son is also on the spectrum, but he's only 3 so it's a bit hard to determine at this point how much he will be impacted by this in life. We are hopeful since he's already getting help that perhaps he can mostly overcome it. He does have a lot of trouble communicating and only says a few words now, will probably require special teaching his entire life.
