Lawrence Phillips sentenced in LA to prison


LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former football star Lawrence Phillips was sentenced Friday to 10 years in prison, two years after he was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon.

The sentencing was repeatedly delayed while Phillips fought to withdraw a guilty plea in a domestic abuse case that could have led to a stiffer sentence.

Phillips was convicted in 2006 of seven counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

The 31-year-old former Nebraska running back has been jailed since August 2005, when he drove onto a field near Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and his car struck two boys, ages 14 and 15, and a 19-year-old man, who suffered cuts and bruises. The car narrowly missed four other people.

He was upset over losing a pickup football game to the youths, prosecutors said.

In court, Phillips tearfully apologized to one of the victims.

"I'm sorry that your leg is messed up," Phillips told Rodney Flores, after hearing the young man tell the court that he was unable to pursue his dream of playing high school sports as a result of being hit when he was 16.

"I'm sorry you have to come in here like this," Phillips said, adding that he "wanted the chance to say I didn't mean to hurt people."

He had tried to avoid a potential 20-year prison term in the assault case by trying to withdraw a 2000 guilty plea to hitting a woman he had been dating during a confrontation at the Beverly Hills Hotel, prosecutors said.

Phillips contended he was coerced into pleading guilty to domestic abuse and making a criminal threat, resulting in a brief prison term and three years of probation.

Details of his fight to withdraw the guilty plea were not immediately available.

That crime would be considered a first strike under California's "three strikes" law. If the guilty plea stood, it means the car assault would be a second strike carrying a potential sentence of 20 years, prosecutors said.

The St. Louis Rams released Phillips for insubordination in 1997. He signed with the Miami Dolphins, but was later released. In 1999 in NFL Europe, he set league records for rushing and touchdowns with the Barcelona Dragons.

He signed with the San Francisco 49ers later that year, but was released for missing a practice. He also has played in the Canadian Football League.

People forget that it was Lawrence Phillips that ended Steve Young's career.  He was the back who was supposed to pick up the corner blitz in Young's last game against Arizona.  Aeneas Williams got a free shot on Young, giving him a concussion and ending his career. 

I remember that game like it wa yesterday - Phillips stood there and let Williams run right by him.

This supposedly is the final chapter in his sad story.  Another major talent wasted. 

Lawrence Phillips isn't dead yet?  I would have bet he would be dead by now.  A sad, sad human.

After 8 years of trauma counseling and heavy pot smoking, I thought I'd finally worked my way past the issues I had about that play, so thanks for resurrecting my pain.

I toss a penny in the wishing well and ask that Lawrence Phillips be repeatedly gang-raped in prison. Does this make me a bad person? Maybe I should get more counseling, just in case...

Maybe he'll get to be cellmates with Cecil Collins. 

I read this first line and thought "wtf?  did Phillips cheap shot Young?  How were they on the field at the same time?"  Now I understand......but think it's beyond a stretch to say he ended Young's career......maybe he can be charged as an accessory.

This issue brings up an point I raised in the dolphins trivia questions post, which went to heaven when the site crashed a few years ago. So many former dolphin running backs have been to prison or jail, that one wonders if the position was cursed.

In addition to Lawrence Phillips, the list includes Sammy Smith, Lamar Smith, Irving Spikes, Bobby Humphrey, Chuck Muncie (cup of coffee with the team), Cecil Collins, and Mercury Morris. I think there are others, though I can't recall them right now. I think Ricky had at least one arrest for driving, as well.

I remember that game quite clearly, and I've never seen a back try less than on that play.  He was standing there on Young's blindside, watching.  Is it a stretch to say that if someone doesn't do their job and somebody else gets hurt, that the fault resides with the person not doing their job? 

I remember it clearly...and painfully as well, and second your assessment of Phillips' effort on that play. Something like 20 seconds left until halftime, Niners up big, and I'm thinking "just run Phillips up the middle and go into halftime." Instead, Young drops back, and Phillips is focused totally on the LB trying to come off the end, and Aeneas Williams blasts right past him and buries Young.

Again, I hate it when bad things happen to good people.

Young should have sued him for lost income.  Got all his money befroe he went to Jail.  Who knows, maybe he'll be able to pick up some pointers from O.J.

No he was not.  He was drafted by Dick Vermeil and the St. Louis Rams in 1996.  He was released with four games left in the 1997 season for insubordination.  JJ signed him for the last three games, then released him the second day of the 1998 training camp. 

I must note, he punched a woman out at the Brickhouse that offseason and was arrested for that assault.

Oh they'll deal with him alright.  I wonder what color cheerleader's outfit he'll be wearing at the next prison yard football game.

I ran across this in the Sun Sentinel.  Turns out he stood trial again for charges of choking his girlfriend several times, once into unconsciousness, and has been convicted of all counts.  He's looking at another 25 years added on to the 10 he's already serving...... enough to keep him behind bars until he's an old man.

It's really sad to see guys like him and Rae Carruth wasting their lives this way.

Actually the last post was less than one year old.   When Philly gravedug it the first time, it was about three years old. 

Didn't Cecil's sentence get overturned?  I could be mistaken, but I remember reading it somewhere.

 I was happy when he became a 'Fin Way back wen. at the same time his history also disturbed me.  A talented Rb out of nebraska.  so much hype.  His of the field attitude suxed... OMG what a down spiral for him.  I thought he changed wen he became a fin.  Pfff whatever... What a waste. i show no pity for the asshat.

Just another example of why the Fins, or any team, should stay away from these "toxic" players that commit violent acts.  This scumbag seems to have a penchant for hitting women and children, Cecil liked to climb through women's windows, wtf?  These guys are no different than spousal abusers who come back the next day and say "i'm sorry" please take me back.  Granted some players should get a second chance, such as a pot smoker or a single incident of DWI, but they should only be allowed to play under strict guidelines that monitor their behavior.

I don't think it is much of a stretch.  I blame Sammy Morris not Pollard for Brady being out for the season last year.  Pollard was doing his job, Morris didn't do his.

His sentence has been extended to 31 years for both choking his girlfriend and driving his car into three teenagers. 

Seeing as he's already in his 30's, he's gonna be a senior citizen by the time he gets out.

31 years so he'll be out in what, 10?  That would put him in his 40's not a nursing home.

Speaking of Cecil Collins, here's a link to his Florida Dept of Corrections information. Looks like Cecil the Diesel's 15 year sentence will be up in 2014, although the state of Louisiana has a "detain" on him. Cecil can someday have a nice reunion with other ex-con dolphin running backs, including Mercury Morris, Sammy Smith, Irving Spikes, Bobby Humphrey, and Lawrence Phillips.

I tried to find Lawrence Phillips in the California system, but they don't have an on line search system like Florida does.

I doubt it.  If the judge is smart, he wouldn't make him eligible for parole.


Thank you for posting this, Doc.  I was able to find a high school buddy of mine who was a track star and could've made the olympics had he worked hard enough.  He's doing time for serial rape and is scheduled for release in 2014
