Title: Re: Howard Stern on Sirius: Anyone?
Post by: Thundergod on January 11, 2006, 04:33:31 pm
I am officially the only human in America that can't stand Stern.  Not because of him,  but because the show really has no point to it (the few times I did hear it).  Unfunny. Phil Hendrie on the other hand... genius.

I have been getting up early all week (it was my New Years resolution to not sleep in so much). I have heard all of the shows, and think its so much better for the reason Dave stated. Howard himself made a rule that he wasn't going to curse. Its not the reason he came to Sirius. He has dropped one or two f-bombs, but just casually in conversation. Artie on the other hand, is cursing non stop! I also must admit, George Takei is a blast! He is in the studio with them this week, but will only be recording announcements for them after this week, from California. So many people have called in saying he should be a permanent member of the studio, and I think Howard is considering it. (Maybe he wanted this all along, but wanted to see how well he worked out?). Today they had Gary wander the Sirius studios and go into the studio for the Gay and Lesbian network (I'm sure Tony knows what channel that is). It was really funny, as they had a simultaneous broadcast going on. The people on the air at that channel were very funny also. Howard said they ould try to meet all of the other stations on air people.
I also like the fact that Howard actually wants to be on the air for more than 4 hours now. All 3 shows this week have been 4-5 hours!

Also- the bit with George Takei and "Arnold Schwarzennager" was funny as hell!

Hey Sugarbush- if you listen to Howard 101, they start playing the whole show on tape delay at 9 am, for the west coast people, so you won't miss any of it.

You're not alone, TG, because I cannot stand Stern either. He's just one of those people whose voice grates on my nerves when I listen for any extended period of time (15+ seconds is usually extended enough).

I don't listen to a lot of talk radio that isn't sports-related anyway. I find that it just depresses or bores me to fukkin' tears. If I can't line up any good sports talk on the dial, I'll immediately start digging through my CD case for some prime tuneage instead.

Thanks Philly Fin Fan.  I'm definitely going to check out the west cost show on Howard 101.  Now I can get my Howard and to sleep in too.  Could my life be any better.

I love listening to the show live, so today I woke up at 9am and listening to the live show on Howard 100 and when it was over  tuned to Howard101 to catch the west coast show so I can get a little of what I missed.  I love it.
Thanks!

I wasn't feeling good this morning, so I slept in and did the same thing.

I am another who has never really liked Howard Stern. My brother is always ranting and raving about how great Stern is but I have just never really been into it. While I do have Sirius I have not checked out his new show and I doubt that I ever will.

I don't get it. What is so funny about a made up radio call in show?

I hate Howard too.  But, the difference between me and you is I alos hate Phil Hendrie.  I never understood what was so funny about all that, especially once his "schtick" was revealed.

Wow guys, I could ask you, what's so entertaining about, I don't know, something else that's made up,  that you like? I'm sure you've seen fictional movies or read fictional books that tickle your fancy for some reason.

Anyone can have a talk show and talk about anything "real" ::yawn::  It's how he pulls it off to make it sound like it is with (unreal) topics, and actually succeeds in creating a talk show out of it with unsuspecting people who call in.  It's comedy.  Like watching a comedic movie, but on the radio.

Hendire's show sounds like a radio version of Jerry Springer to me. I'm not knocking you, I just don't get the humor.

LOL, good analogy,  true.  Funny thing is, I can't stand Springer.   :)

For those of you that aren't aware, Phil Hendrie is a pretty amazing talent.  His show consists of this format:

Hendrie plays the role of the level-headed host.
He also has "guests" on the show that are always totally asinine.  Whatever they stand for is ludicrous.  Hendrie also plays the role of the fake guests.  He then argues with himself in real time, using different voices.  He does this to get people riled up to call the show and get in verbal arguments with the fake guest.

The people who call in usually have the best intentions, but are a few cans short of a six pack.

Examples of things I've heard from his "guests":
- man who locked his mother and her friends in the basement so that she couldn't get out and vote for John Kerry.

- cheauvanist pig that insisted that all women couldn't help but want to cheat on their husbands with him.

There are others that I just can't remember, but the show is funny, once you're on to what's going on.  ...he also does a great job of making the stories more ridiculous, or backing off just enough to keep the person on the line.

I didn't think it was funny before I knew the gig, but once it was out, it just got funny listening to the callers call in who DIDN'T know.

Sometimes, I wonder if the callers know and call in just to be part of the humor.

Now that I think of it, some of his stuff is a little funny, but its unique for sure.  Is he still on WIOD?

No, he and Neil Rogers used to be friends, but Phil Hendrie got pretty political on his show (his views are opposite of Neils) and they sort of fell apart.  Phil is syndicated now.
