Title: State of the Red Sox: defense

Tailing my State of the offense address, let's take a look at Boston's defense for 2006.

Center field - Coco Crisp

... The knock on Crisp is his arm strength, however he possesses a stronger arm than the man he replaces in Johnny Damon.

I still think the following spiteful tagline (from a Bill Simmons mailbag) is one of the best sports quotes I read this past year...

Johnny Damon: Looks like Jesus, throws like Mary, betrays like Judas."

Classic...simply classic!

On a serious note, I think it's pretty obvious from a personnel standpoint that Boston improved significantly on defense this offseason. That division is going to be a bloodbath though, and if the supporting cast behind Manny and Papi (specifically Petagine, Loretta, Lowell and Gonzo) doesn't perform at the plate, then Boston, imo, will have some problems this season. I know very little about Petagine beyond what you've mentioned up here, Maine, but I have followed Loretta, Lowell and Gonzo pretty closely the past few seasons, and I'm not so convinced that they'll be able to carry their weight at the plate.  ;)

Please tell me you are kidding?  Glaus was knocking on errors last season, you're unproven at SS, traded Hudson and are unproven there.  Overbay is okay at best with the love and Shea Hillenbran is about a pubic hair worse than Kevin Millar.  The Blue Jays might have improved in some areas, but defense?  They'll be lucky to not be in the bottom five in the league.

Glaus was also playing with a nagging foot injury. Adams is going to get better defensively. Hinske made a lot of errors his first season with the club and look where is he defensively now. averages 7 a season. My point is that he will get better. Did you forgot we have GG Vernon Wells. and Aaron Hill
