Title: TDMMC Mock Draft
Post by: Dave Gray on January 31, 2006, 11:31:12 am
Note -- please only pick ONE guy, then let the next several go by before you pick again.  You may add notes if you'd like, but they aren't needed.  NO TRADES.  Also, make sure that you don't pick a guy that's already been picked.

I'll start:

1) HOUSTON TEXAS - Reggie Bush, RB, Southern Cal

All this talk about giving up on Carr, I think is BS.  Bush seems to be that special talent that only comes along every few years.  The Texans take him, no question.

On the clock: New Orleans

With the second pick of the draft, The New Orleans Saints select:

Matt Leinart.

All this talk of him dropping is bogus. The Saints need a big name franchise QB, and Leinart is the guy. Also, its a wise move if Benson plans to sell the team to LA interests. Bringing a franchise to Southern California with Leianrt as the QB is a marketing goldmine.

With the third pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Tennesee Titans select.......

QB Vince Young of Texas

Steve McNair has obviously begun the twilight of his NFL career, so it is time to start grooming his replacement.  And Billy Volek aint it.  Young has a cannon arm and Michael Vick-esque legs.  The knock on him is his sidearm throwing motion, which can easily be worked on.

With the fourth pick of the draft ... the New York Stinkin Jets select qb Jay Cutler from Vandy.

This may be the only smart thing the Jets do this year but I hear they are high on Cutler.

With the fifth pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select LB A.J. Hawk from Ohio State

I just got off the phone with a client who is a die-hard Packers fan. He asked me to try working a trade down, but if that was impossible, to select A.J. on his behalf. Hawk fills a serious need position. I personally would have gone after D-Brick here, but GB is set OK at tackle...they need interior linemen and an entire new defense.

I'm surprised you didn't hold out for the San Fran pick!

I was, but that client asked me to make the GB pick on his behalf. I'll probably jump in at #7 for my Niners as well, and then sit back and watch the rest of the way.  :D

I know you said to let several go by, but this is a no brainer:

With the sixth pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders select.......

DE Tamba Hali of Penn St

Like Green Bay, Oakland needs a major defensive makeover.  One area that needs immediate attention is their ability to pressure opposing QB's.  The Liberian Lacerator (Hali) would fill that need tremendously.

Only in the squishiest of Sunstroke's wet dreams could this next pick actually happen:

With the 7th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the 5-time Super Bowl Champion Forty-Niners select: Offensive Tackle, D'Brickashaw Ferguson

(...and there was much rejoicing throughout the land...YAY!)

With the 8th pick in the 2006 NFL draft......the SUCKSHIT Buffalo Bills select

Winston Justice - OT Southern California

They need help at Defensive Tackle as well but can not pass on an what should be an immediate impact player for their Offensive offensive line!!!!!

The Detroit Lions are on the clock!!!!!

With the tenth pick in the 2006 NFL draft, the Arizona Cardinals select LenDale White, running back, USC.

The Cardinals suffered from "groundgamesuckitis" in 2005, a chronic condition that, if left untreated, could lead to "deadkurtwarner simplex syndrome".  The Cardinals draft for need, and select perhaps the best power back in the draft.

LOL My point exactly. I guess we will see come draft day!!!!

With the tenth pick in the 2006 NFL draft, the Arizona Cardinals select LenDale White, running back, USC.

This is a huge possibility and exactly who I would have placed in this spot!!!!  8)

sorry for the edit there, JVides...I just wanted to bold the pick like the rest so no one misses it.

I agree...LenDale in Glendale fits like a glove. Imagine what Larry and Quan could do on the outside if they only had a legitimate bruising RB between the tackles to keep defenses from cheating.

With the 11th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the St Louis Rams select....

DE Mathias Kiwanuka of Boston College

The Rams will need a new pass rushing specialist now that Leonard Little is 31 and seems to want to find happiness at the bottom of a cocktail glass.  With Tamba Hali already gone, this is their best option.

With the 12th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select: LB Demeco Ryans, Alabama

If Ryans actually slid this far, the Brownies would have to be ecstatic. LB is a big need position, and Ryans is considered a fairly close second behind Hawk in this year's strong and deep LB class. Won the defensive player of the year award in the SEC, so you know he can get at 'em, but what I think I like most about Ryans is how smart the guy is. He won the Bryant award as 'Bama's top student-athlete this year, and was an all state student-athlete in HS as well. Fast, strong, smart...Cleveland could use an extra helping of all three elements.

With the thirteenth pick in the NFL draft, the Baltimore Ravens select running back DeAngelo Williams of Memphis

With questions surrounding Jamal Lewis' health and contract, and the top-tier quarterbacks already gone, the Baltimore Ravens move to solidify the running back position.  Though not the bruising runner LenDale White is (Baltimore's first choice), Williams provides the Ravens with a quick, elusive back with some power between the tackles.

I've always loved the college game, and have always felt that knowing the players at that level gives me a good perspective on them as they develop at the NFL level.

13 - Philadelphia Eagles - Vernon Davis - TE - Maryland

The Eagles need to start looking for offense to replace the T.O. scoring threat.  Without any stud WRs on the board here, a standout TE might be the answer.

13 - Philadelphia Eagles - Vernon Davis - TE - Maryland

I think Davis would be a decent value at that slot, and I think he's a lock to become an excellent NFL TE (I'm not ready to give him Gonzo-Gates status like some folks quite yet)...but Philly is pretty flush with decent TE's at this point (LJ Smith, Chad Lewis and I think one more), so grabbing an upgrade to a non-critical position would be a bit of a surprise at #13.

Despite his talent, I think Vernon will probably slide to Minnesota at #17, but if they don't take him there, Vernon could easily become that guy we see in the draft every year who slides so much further than anyone expects simply because of the limited number of teams with that position at the top of their needs list. For the Tampa Bay fans...I'm thinking Vernon could slide all the way to you at #23.

With the 15th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Atlanta Falcons select.....

WR Santonio Holmes of Ohio St

The Falcons need a new target to catch Michael Vick's laser beams.  This is one of the best WR's in a not-so-deep class.

The Dolphins are on the clock!!!!!

Thought it might help to keep this on current page so anyone who just pops in can see the full first round draft order and which players have already gone off the board (and even jump in with the next selection if they feel a little jiggy).

Please keep doing it the way we have been though, make the selection for the team on the clock in your post...it's good that way. I'll update this as we go. Would one of the site's moderators make the Dolphins "real" selection? Seems like the right thing to do.

1) Houston Texans:  Reggie Bush, RB, USC (Dave)
2) New Orleans Saints:  Matt Leinart, QB, USC (Philly)
3) Tennesee Titans:  Vince Young, QB, Texas (Tommy)

Just because I pretty much agree with Doug and couldn't say it any better... I'll repost one that he already did for Miami.

Quote from: The Phinatic
I'll take it   ;D .

First of all, let me start by saying the draft ain't gonna happen this way  ;D .  Everyone let the top cornerback drop to #16 so I'm taking him.

The Miami Dolphins select Virginia Tech Cornerback/Safety Jimmy Williams

I would love to get Jay Cutler, but he's gone.  In this scenario, I'm fixing my 2nd biggest weak spot (dbs). Williams will be an instant starter and keep it from getting toasty in South Florida!  Then, I'm going after Whitehurst in the 2nd or 3rd depending on how his stock moves after the Combine.

Minnesota is on the clock ...

Since Doug snuck in and took Miami I'll go with Minnesota ...  ;)

With the 17th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select.....

LB Chad Greenway from Iowa

Can you say DEFENSE? That felt wierd as we haven't said it in quite a while.

Dallas Cowboys are on the clock ....

With the 18th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowgirls select: OT Marcus McNeill from Auburn

The Chargers are on the clock...

As far as Phinatic's comment about there being no way the draft will go this way...I agree completely. Jimmy Williams is a monster, and shouldn't slide anywhere near that far. He'll probably go to my Niners, but for this mock's sake, I certainly couldn't see the 49ers passing on D'Brickashaw if he was there at #7.

With the 19th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the San Diego Chargers select.....

DB Darnell Bing of Southern Cal

The chargers need someone who can impact their secondary.  With both of the top CB prospects (Huff and Williams) gone, they opt for Bing who is a big, athletic, hard hitting safety.  He should be able to step in and contribute immediately.

Kansas City is on the clock!!!!

With the 21st pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots select LB Thomas Howard from UTEP

New England's LB corps is about the oldest in the NFL, and new blood is definitely needed. I think Thomas Howard is a better fit here than the other LB that's projecting as a late 1st rounder, the Buckeyes' Bobby Carpenter.

The biggest dilemma in this pick is that there is one player that should never, ever have fallen as far as he has so far in this mock...Oregon DT Haloti Ngata. I couldn't have NE take him here though, since they have two damned good ones in Seymour and Wilfork already. Ngata is gonna be an elite run-stopper at NT for some 3-4 team though. 6'5, 351 lbs and as strong from the hips down as anyone in the draft. Basically, a solid wall with shoulderpads...

At this point, the 49ers would like to trade up (our early second and our early third) to take Ngata. If Nolan could come out of this draft with two players like D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Haloti Ngata to anchor our lines, I'd be one seriously happy camper!  ;D

The Denver Broncos are on the clock...I'm sending a PM to D_B so he can make his team's two first round picks.

The Bengals need someone who can clog up the middle and disrupt running plays while occasionally pressuring the QB.  Bunkley and Rodrique Wright of Texas fit that description perfectly, with Bunkley grading out just a little bit better.

The Giants are on the clock!!!

After their OT debacle in Seattle could the Giants reach for a kicker???  What about their playoff debacle against Carolina?  They couldn't stop the run, run the ball or protect the QB = best lineman available?

Phinatic - love the pick.  I'm more of a "the game is won in the trenches" type of guy so was hoping for a guard or left tackle (because the QBs were gone) - but Huff would do nicely.  Let's assume that Seattle's Hutchinson is not franchised and we sign the future HOFer.   ;)

PS - I usually hate mock drafts but this has been kind of fun.  Love the commentary.  Now someone hurry and pick a WSU Cougar damnit!  I demand appeasment!   ;D

Carolina may have hurt us with their running game, but we were missing our entire starting linebacking crew. Those young guys played ok and need to work on tackling, but atleast we have guys familiar with the system. When the LB's were there, we still got burned deep. Terrible secondary so, and i'm not great on the depth at the college levels, but he's fast, the Giants take: South Carolina cornerback Johnathan Joseph.

Carolina is on the clock... Scar Face, would you select for your Panthers?

This would mimic a few mock drafts I've seen if the player below falls to No. 27.

You wouldn't think Carolina would be interested in a high pick for their defensive line, but after missing basically two seasons, the return and health of Kris Jenkins can't be counted on.

With the 27th pick in the draft, the Carolina Panthers select:

Gabe Watson, DT, Michigan

(I can't believe I just picked a Wolverine)

This would mimic a few mock drafts I've seen if the player below falls to No. 27.

I'd be curious to see how many of those mocks still had Haloti Ngata (the best DT in the draft) on the board when Gabe Watson was selected. I still haven't seen Ngata drop out of the top 15 anywhere...except here. Wow...

Who in their right mind drafts a duck in the first round?  Wasn't Akili Smith the last one?  Even Fouts lasted until the 3rd didn't he?   :P

Wow is right... I didn't even consider him.... I was looking at players and just assumed he was gone.

Joey Harrington?  He went 3rd overall.

With the 28th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select........

TE Leonard Pope of Georgia

The Jags desperately need a tight end who is balanced at both catching and blocking.  With Vernon Davis long gone, Pope is their best bet.  He will give Byron Leftwitch another target downfield.

The Broncos are on the clock!!!!

Oh yeah - thanks.

That kind of reinforces my point, doesn't it?

With the 29th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, Denver_Bronco selects........

TE Johny Weir from The Skating Club of New York

The Colts are on the clock!!!!

You know you were thinking the same thing.

While I found this funny as all hell (puts a whole different spin on "mock" drafting), it might confuse the natives. Olympian Johnny Weir won't be figure skating for the Broncos next season...though I'd pay to see him take one good hit from John Lynch in practice.

To rectumfy an unacceptable situation...

With the 29th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, Denver DC Larry Coyer's wet dream becomes reality as the Broncos select the Norse God of Run-stuffing, Haloti Ngata of the University of Asgard (Oregon)

NOW the Colts are on the clock...  ;)

I am going to wrap up this mock draft, because the last two picks were a figure skater and a RB who won't even go on day one, much less round one. Besides...this draft has dragged out way too long here.

With the 30th pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select RB Laurence Maroney from Minnesota

I can't see the Colts not taking a RB with one of their first two picks, and if Maroney is available, I just can't see Indy going any other direction here.

With the 31st pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select WR Chad Jackson from Florida

WR is high on Seattle's list this draft, and Chad Jackson will give Hasselbeck an outstanding target to line up opposite D-Jax.

With the 32nd pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers select OG Taitusi Lutui from USC

It's either interior O-line or LB here, and I see Pittsburgh going with the O-line first, due to the depth at LB in this draft. Deuce Lutui will be a stud at the next level...
