John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the restructured contract signed by San Diego Chargers QB A.J. Feeley was a two-year, $2 million deal that includes a $455,000 signing bonus. Then THAT means they can't afford to pay Rivers a starter's salary to keep him on the bench, which makes him expendable.

I would also guess that Feeley contract is lower than this initial Clayton report. I think that because the purpose of restructuring the contract was to keep Feeley in San Diego. The GM basically said without this deal Feeley would have to have been let go (paraphrase). The statement was something like this new contract will allow us to keep Feeley.

AJ Smith said, the ball's in Bree's court, they'll give him a week to decide, and it was like 4 days and they havent heard back from him. this was like almost 2 weeks ago, and i havent heard if he accepted or not. The Chargers probably won't franchise Brees, they will want to offer a transitive contract. Something that gives them flexibility & an insurance policy. Basically they are scared to play their hands now so they are going to wait until the last minute to see how that shoulder is holding up. I say put one of them (brees/rivers) on the block already & get something for them while you can before both of them end up as duds.

There has been an initial long-term offer made to Brees' agent, but I haven't found anything that breaks down what the offer is. Two things that make me think this... 1) Marty Chokenheimer knows how close his team is to contending for a title 2) Marty Chokenheimer knows how close his ass is to being axed if he doesn't win something soon I think that they'll sign Brees long-term shortly, and I think the Bolts will be actively burning up the phone lines, trying to find a deal for Rivers that will give them enough talent in other areas (picks/players) to put them over the top. Now here's where you can see a three-team deal, which is rare in the NFL. I would definitely give up Ricky for Rivers, but the Chargers don't need another running back. If AZ wasn't so focused on the two draft RBs on their plate (DeAngelo and LenDale), I'd think they'd be a perfect fit. San Diego could use O-linemen, and AZ could sign and trade LJ Shelton to SD in that mix. Other teams that could possibly be involved (read: teams that need a RB) could be: Minnesota, Carolina, Denver, NYJ, Cleveland...even New England could be looking for Dillon's successor at this point. OK, so here's the proposed trade: Miami gets: QB Phillip Rivers from San Diego Arizona gets: RB Ricky Williams from Miami San Diego gets: OT Leonard Davis from Arizona Then we sign Ron Dayne as a solid backup for Ronnie, giving us the R&R express. I'd love to hear the names of some scatbacks around the NFL that we can get for a bargain price. The reason I like having two pounders is that they will wear down the opposing front seven every time. Can you imagine getting plowed into nonstop by Ronnie and Ricky all day long? By the 4th quarter, you're gonna be hurting so bad you won't want to get up when they run over you. |
