Title: Why can't Damon get over that he's not in Boston anymore? Post by: MaineDolFan on February 28, 2006, 12:50:49 pm Boston fans are infamous for the following statements after players leave: "We didn't need him anyway." "He wasn't that great." "He's getting too old." This isn't just Red Sox fans, but Celtic fans, Bruins fans and Pats fans. However, when it comes to Johnny Damon, I have to give the Sox fans some credit. Once we made the trade for Coco Crisp, you hear more excitement about Crisp versus piling on Damon. Which begs the question: Why can't Johnny Damon get over the fact that he's not a member of the Boston Red Sox anymore? When is Damon going to start talking about how excited he is to be a New York Yankee? When are his teammates going to get annoyed with Damon talking about the Red Sox every time a reporter walks up to him. Yesterday in Florida Damon all but stated that he wished he was still in Boston. “I guess I wonder why they didn’t make their offer (of four years and $40 million) earlier, like at the All-Star break. But in this game, you get immune to it. I still would have given them a discount.†(IE - had they offered 4/40 at the break last year, I'd be patrolling the Sox training ground right now with my hair intact.) "My kids are still mad at me for being a Yankee. They reminded me yesterday that Boston's first game is this Friday against the Twins. They want to go." "The Idiots ... that's gone," said Damon, peering back at the universe he just left from the scenic overlook of this strange new solar system he has just entered. "That carefree attitude -- it's gone. And it's a shame." (Why is that a "shame", Johnny? You are playing for the New York freakin' Yankees and they are paying you three million a year more than Boston offered. So...where is the shame?) Damon spends a lot of time on the field text messaging Kevin Millar, so much that he was asked to not carry his cell phone on to the field with him. It's like listening to a guy that got dumped. The guy still pines after the girl, but she's moved on. This has nothing to do with how he performs this year, it's a classic example of an athlete that followed his wallet versus his heart. Damon will spend the rest of his career wishing he were pulling on a different uniform, and that's too bad. For him and his teammates. Next time a reporter asks Johnny a question, I sure hope he just focuses on his future versus his past. Boston's moved on, so should he. Title: Re: Why can't Damon get over that he's not in Boston anymore? Post by: Denver_Bronco on February 28, 2006, 01:15:39 pm Evertime he looks in his wallet he's happy. He is just trying to not look like he's not selfish. Ingenius move.
Title: Re: Why can't Damon get over that he's not in Boston anymore? Post by: MaineDolFan on February 28, 2006, 01:29:40 pm Um, no it's not. You are a free agent, you sign with your new team and you move on. When you have members of the New York media starting to publish stories about "cry baby Johnny wanting to go home to Boston" - that's not good. Yankee fans don't want to hear anything about how much Damon misses New York. Last time I checked, he needs to play 80 games in front of them, not Boston fans.
So who is he trying to impress? Title: Re: Why can't Damon get over that he's not in Boston anymore? Post by: Denver_Bronco on February 28, 2006, 01:47:15 pm Um, no it's not. I could care less. Ever been away from home and gotten home sick ? The guy had been there for years. It grows on you. Do you expect him to denounce that he was ever a part of that area or the team ? Maybe these comments keep coming out because the media keeps asking the same repetitive question that they always do to cause chaos. So who is he trying to impress? And in what context was this quote in: "My kids are still mad at me for being a Yankee. They reminded me yesterday that Boston's first game is this Friday against the Twins. They want to go." I absolutely guarantee he was laughing and kidding when he said that statement. Might be true, but it was more of a comical response. (The preceding message was brought to you by the other 29 teams in Major League Baseball) Title: Re: Why can't Damon get over that he's not in Boston anymore? Post by: MaineDolFan on February 28, 2006, 02:43:17 pm I could care less. Ever been away from home and gotten home sick ? My new home didn't come complete with 40 house guests and a 13 million dollar salary.Do you expect him to denounce that he was ever a part of that area or the team ? No, I expect him to be a professional and worry more about the team that he's playing for now and not the one he had played for.Maybe these comments keep coming out because the media keeps asking the same repetitive question that they always do to cause chaos. Actually - the question to Damon that launched him into this latest "God, why did I leave Boston" rant had nothing to do with the Boston Red Sox, nor the past four years. He's bringing it up all on his own.And in what context was this quote in: "My kids are still mad at me for being a Yankee. They reminded me yesterday that Boston's first game is this Friday against the Twins. They want to go." I absolutely guarantee he was laughing and kidding when he said that statement. Might be true, but it was more of a comical response. Your "absolute guarantee" is utterly and completely wrong. This one was a clip that aired on Fox Sporting News. He was dead serious and went on to say how his kids are having a VERY hard time with "daddy" playing for the "bad guys" now. At one point in time he looked like he was going to cry, he was very upset talking about this. Nothing comical about it what so ever. Stop defending the guy like I question his ability. Facts are facts - he might be in a Yankee uniform...but he doesn't want to be. That's exactly what would make me run out and buy a Damon Yankees jersey. What is "professional" to you, might not be "professional" to someone else. Is professional hiding his feelings or is professional saying what's really on his mind. I commend him for his honesty the same way i commend Curt Schilling for saying what's on his mind. There is no difference. Stop spinning it cause you are still burnt that your boy is wearing pinstripes. The Empire has spoken. Title: Re: Why can't Damon get over that he's not in Boston anymore? Post by: MaineDolFan on February 28, 2006, 03:01:16 pm Being a professional means to earn your paycheck with your employer and to be loyal to that employer. As a member of the Yankees, Damon's employer includes the Yankee fan base. If I were a Yankee fan (thank God I'm smarter than that), I would be insulted that our prize free agent can't stop talking / thinking about the Boston Red Sox - and not in a "I can't wait to get them on the field" way.
This has nothing to do with speaking your mind. This has to do with letting go. He's not a member of the Red Sox anymore, but you wouldn't know it by listening to him talk. This has nothing to do about any difference of opinion on what a "professional" is. The "Empire" clearly did not speak, if you were in tune with the "Empire" you would know that Yankee fans are very pissed off about this. This has nothing to do with spin. Athletes come and go. I've seen bigger names than Johnny Damon leave the Red Sox. Again - stay on topic. He took the ad out in the Herald thanking Boston fans. Great, now let it go. Wonder how mad they'll be when he hits .320 and we win the series ? Some people aren't so short-sighted my friend. Just because you think a person needs to act a certain way doesn't make your way the right way. Title: Re: Why can't Damon get over that he's not in Boston anymore?
